QAFL 2024 season

The suns don’t contract mature players, they use academy kids as their main list is longer.

I think the advantage is probably not as much as people think. Sharks as an example have a list of 40, play 23 , take an emergency, have a few injuries and the rest (who are often younger developing players) spread to QAFL clubs. Several aligned to Brisbane clubs or FIFO clubs.

At my club the only non- ex junior we ever see is Bowman who granted is a good player however not knowing availability of players until 7:30 on a Thursday and being obligated to play vfl listed player in the seniors regardless of form can be disruptive.

Grange lost their best player in Martyn to the lions so I don’t see how they are advantaged by that- likewise banks smith and Aston getting vfl listed and possibly playing the odd game back at their qafl club. Sharks list our best young talent each year which we support of course but it can leave a hole.

Premier, if it’s no advantage why are you against a fair distribution?

That’s all very well 2010…. Until there is a bye round in the vfl and suddenly 6 blokes come bk in for a specific side. All vfl standard. It’s an anomaly I think. A bloke who comes from interstate to play vfl footy shouldn’t be filtered out to the closest qafl club at 2 pts. That’s just stupid.

You can only play 4 VFL listed players each week, as I think that’s why Will Martyn didn’t play for grange on the weekend plus one other who was available.

How is Clay Cameron straight out of SANFL only 3 points? Surely he is 5 points every day of the week? Another gift form Headquarters for Redlands unless rules have changed again?

Also how is Sullivan that went from MtGravatt to Redlands whilst VFL listed only 3 points?

Seems leg ups continue.

Some big anomalies in points across a few clubs.

Zac Smith (Surfers) - listed a 6, he should be a 5. Hasn't played AFL footy in the last 3 seasons as far as I can see and doesn't trigger any penalty points.

Errin Wasley-Black (Aspley) - should be 5 points. Played VFL in 2021, doesn't qualify for season service discount as he departed Aspley for the 2nd half of last season, so it should reset.

Nick Dodge (Aspley) - listed as 1 point, should be 2 points. Former VFL player, arrived from Gympie in 2022, no promotion discount as not from QLD and doesn't qualify. 2024 is his 3rd season, so discount takes him from 3 points to 2 points.

Will Peppin (Aspley) - listed as 1 point, should be 3 points. TSL in 2020, base points of 4. Didn't play sufficient games for Aspley in 2021 to get a season of service, so 2024 is his 3rd year. Therefore he should be discounted 1 point down to 3 from 4 in 2024 in his 3rd year for Aspley.

Kailem Baker (Grange) - listed as 4 points, should be 6. Clear direct transfer from Redland to Grange, obvious 2 point penalty. If people suggest it was ticked off, what is the process for transparency to all clubs for stuff like this?

Lachlan Rhook (Grange) - he might be VFL listed, so not sure on this one. If not, he has arrived from Cairns as a 3 pointer. Changed clubs 4 years in a row, so should be a 4 pointer on arrival in 2023 and remain a 4 pointer (unless on Lions VFL list - he doesn't appear here - https://www.lions.com.au/teams/vfl/squad )

Clay Cameron (Redland) - listed as a 3 pointer. Played last 3 years in the SANFL, this one is a standout incorrect points assignment. Some dodgy negotiations have happened here, do rival clubs get told when a discount is given and why?

Luke O'Sullivan (Redland) - listed as 3 points, should be 5 points. Played 6 x VFL games in 2022, making his base rating 5 points. Switched alignment in 2023 to Redland, but hasn't got sufficient service to reduce his base value, so coming of Lions VFL list he is re-assessed at base value, which should be 5. No discounts available.

Hayden Bertoli-Simmons (Morningside) - listed as 2 points, should be 5 points. Played VFL for Williamstown in 2022, making his base points as 5. Has no eligibility for discounts at any club other than Kenmore. Another backdoor negotiation here.

Matthew Waters (Morningside) - listed as 4 points, should be 5 points. Base of 4 from playing at Redland, on his 3rd club in 3 seasons, triggers a 1 point penalty.

Isaac McCarthy (Sherwood) - listed as 1 point, should be 3. Played senior footy at Kedron in 2023.

Sounds dodgy. How does this get rectified though? Would a club have to come forward and question some of these?

Comp loses a bit of integrity if there are plenty of wrongly allocated points

there is definitely a mechanism to have someone re-assessed, but no idea on whether that process or its outcomes is shared with other clubs and if they are allowed to query it. Would think its important for transparency though.

Isaac McCarthy is 1 point as he’s under 21 which makes him a 2 point player and coming from lower Div so gets a reduction that makes him 1 point.

Rhook is on Southport VFL list so he’s 2

The bottom line is, something that is available to 8 sides is not available to 2 sides, regardless of the spin you put on it, that is a massive compromise.

That’s a fair overview Miller. Not just a pretty face that no one knows 😂

In a bye round a maximum of 4 players that played the previous week are allowed back to prevent the stacking you speak of and trust me when sharks have a bye 9 times out of 10 they mandate all their players have a week off even those that have been playing qafl

I see Matt Eagles has signed with the Cairns City Lions. He doesn’t have a great track record with adhering to club standards. So let’s see if he can turn that around and be a significant player for Cairns Lions.

Can't hide in PlayHQ - playing history is all there for everyone.

Helps being semi-retired.
Should there be an independent committee or board set up to rule on any requests outside the points cap.

That way it is like tribunal where requests are made and decisions handed down for all clubs to see.

It is obvious that the same clubs seem to be getting the green light on these points cap relief decisions handed out by Headquarters.

Probably time to take this from them so it’s a lot more transparent?

should just email all clubs that a review has taken place, let them know of decision and the reasons why.

One thing I don't like is the 2 point penalty for a ressies battler seeking opportunity. Penalise blokes who are playing regular 1s, but a bloke who is hammering away in the 2s at Aspley for example, deciding to go play at Mt Gravatt and play 1s. He should be a 2-3 pointer, not a 5-6 pointer.
