After an even first half 2 goals each a pop, redlands opened up a 3 or 4 goal lead in the 3rd qtr and eventually won by 20 something points. it was a praccy, they played fun footy from a spectator perspective. The teams played in good spirits and I thought I saw some tongue.

Im a Grange fan, can't speak for the sharks. But I reckon the Gorillas have a decent list that won't win a flag, potentially won't make finals, but also won't let you pass by if you're not on your game

Can't identify any players specifically. I didn't see Bakes but I do drink a lot.

Now kicking back to watch masters. If they had mastersmasters, I might even put my hand up :D

Cats beat Labrador by 2-3 goals in a scrappy game that had a lot of niggle. Not really one for the time capsule that’s for sure. Young Cat off to hospital suspected broken jaw a bit ordinary by the lab bloke

Did Beau Addinsall play for Broady today? What about Kalani White or Max Hudson? If so, how did they go? If you were paying attention to them, that is.

Tough to cop a broken jaw from a praccy. We're all parochial but that's bad news,

Any other results?

Colts - Aspley def Sherwood by 3 points (kick after siren)
Reserves - Sherwood def Aspley by 10 points
Seniors - Sherwood def Aspley by 16 points

Both squads missing a handful, but also certainly had sides out there likely to mirror a H&A game once injuries kick in etc

Banks-Smith copped a head knock and went off pretty early on. Fletcher and Cameron for the Pies had the feet up at 3/4 time.

Thought it was a pretty high standard of footy in all 3 grades. Colts an interesting comp this year, appeared to be basically 2 x u17 teams playing, think everyone fielding pretty young teams in this space.

Noosa belted by the siders yesterday in Brisy in both Seniors and Reserves but had a good win in the colts.Had a heap missing at a wedding but from all reports Morningside looked very well drilled. Noosa play Maroochydore this Thursday night at Noosa in their final practise game!

Nice wrap

Interesting on Colts … heard there’s a real void in the U 17s age divisions this year across the south east & that there’ll basically be no 17s div 2 as they’ll merge them all into the 1 div owing to a shortage of numbers across clubs (talented 17s playing up in colts & other factors steering 16-17 yr olds away from playing - Yr 12 study, work commitments, dating birds (lol) etc)

Yeah there’s issues around that age no question

Yeah, I think its a multi faceted issue. Limiting clubs to 2 teams was good in theory (I actually strongly agreed with the move) but in practice it is backfiring. Kids are just departing the game altogether rather than opting to play elsewhere, and its happening in big numbers.

Our strategy has been to reduce and limit numbers in 13s and 15s and not accept transfers, giving us 4 x u13, 3 x u15 and 2 x u17 - but this needs to be a consistent competition wide approach (or AFLQ should mandate it) otherwise it just doesn't work, as some clubs very happy to collect all the talent at 13-15 and turf their own kids out the back door. We turned away about 15-20 transfers into our u13s for this year, several of them played state footy in 2024 and we suggested they stay with their home club until its the right time to move. However, on the back of ''encouragement'' from academy programs, a misguided view you need to change clubs at 13 and some places willingness to run 6+ u13 teams and let them in via ''application'' means the system breaks down and the smaller clubs are just getting smaller.

On the back of this, there is also the more talented kids who are ready for Colts now and want to play now. We let them, once they are eligible, we pick them if they are good enough. Our Prelim final Colts team last year had 13 x u17s in it and 1 x u15. Our Colts team on Saturday had 14 x u17s and 2 x u15s. Most clubs would also have several Colts eligible blokes playing 1s as well, which is pulling more up from u17s.

I actually don't really have a solution to the problem, other than letting clubs have more than 2 x u17s again - but then that just reconfirms the other issue of the smaller clubs getting smaller and the big clubs getting bigger - which isn't good for local footy.

Guess that's why we have AFL, their job to solve it!

They should as a starting point have the full 2 years in the colts age group, go to 19.5 as the cut off while the juniors ends at 17.5.

I actually think 17.5 is too old cut off for juniors (straight u17 better?but I know there were reasons for the change to half years to align with school so I could be corrected.

Most of our boys had 1 year only in colts last year which has made numbers a challenge in colts this year. Fortunately we have plenty of u 17 but not all clubs have that and bringing a heap up brings diffulties downstream

I didn't think playing Under 15's players was allowed in Colts competitions, unless they were Academy players?

Who gives a crap what the academy thinks.

You just have to be 15 to qualify , then it comes down to whether you are good enough.

Remember you can actually be 15, and even 16 after June 30 to play u15s.

Plenty of 16-17 year olds at heaps of clubs have been playing Senior QAFL Footy let alone Colts when deemed not good enough to be part of academy teams. Talent ID obviously a subjective thing, so nobody right or wrong - but club selection obviously uncompromised.

Go back a few years, Nathan Colenso won the QAFL Rising Star as a 17 year old, kicked 40 odd from half forward, Riley Greene was R/up and finished top 5 in Senior club best & Fairest at 17 - neither could get an academy gig, while their clubmates playing Colts populated the Academy teams and State teams. Nothing has changed at all. 16 year old lad played Seniors for Morningside last year, then virtual best on in the Colts GF until getting hurt. No luck for him either šŸ˜…

That will be a good watch any update on score?

Legends,
It's that time again... the QAFL tipping comp is back! Optimism and hopes are high, and glory is within reach as we head into a brand new season (and let's be honest, this is probably the best part of the year).

I'm happy to run the tipping comp this season, unless stuyd1 puts his hand up again. But I need to know who's keen! Reply here if you're in, and don't worry, the same rules apply as always - post your tips before 12:00pm each Saturday for every round. Easy.

Let's see who's got what it takes to come out on top!

Time to get stuck in šŸ’Ŗ

Defoes in! Just note that stuyd1 did bring it up as well about a month back but the thread was in its infancy then.
