Hypothetically, we finish first, who do we want finishing fourth? Freo or WB?

I know people are going to pull out the 'we have to beat anyone' line, but I'd personally rather have Freo in Melbourne. You?

Freo, but it won't happen, they're stuffed. If we finish first we'll be playing the doggies, which won't be too bad at all, beat them twice this year should be able to do it again.

My preferred option is Stkilda, but unless we lose a few games, we won't be playing them, so I actually hope it doesn't pan out that way.

The Dogs will finish ahead of Freo, Freo are in a tailspin, and have been ever since Barlow broke his leg.

Freo are likely to lose at least 2 more games, so the Dogs are odds on for fourth.

If that pans out, I think the Saints will be the "softer" option, as they have 5 very easy games leading into September, and won't know what has hit them in the first week of the finals.

Freo have a heaps easier run home then the dogs, they could still jump them back.

Personally I'd prefer freo, obvious reasons, but we have beaten the dogs twice and I believe our team and our structures are better now so I wouldn't be fearing them.

One last thing, home qf against freo, parochial all collingwood crowd, gee that would be ****en awesome wouldn't it?

yep freo at the G would be sooo sweet. They have serious injury probs atm and we will slaughter them if we play them. As with WB as zahki said we done it twice we can do again...

We've done the dogs twice this year at Ethiad and at the MCG i'd be even more confident.

Week 1: Coll df St K (QF)
Week 2: Rest
Week 3: Coll df WB (Pre)
Week 4: Coll df Geel or St K (GF)

I reckon we will finish 2nd and it will be something like this....hopefully

Apologies to the OP and I won't quite use the "we have to beat anyone" line.

But...

I've spent a lot of time considering the top 4 permutations with Collingwood's best chances in mind. And I've concluded that it's loser's mentality to be doing this. Our finals opponents are beyond our control. It's therefore a moot point, a waste of energy and a distraction to be thinking about it. We need to be focussing on how WE can play our best football against whatever opponent, looking within and not sideways. Do you think Geelong is looking sideways...doubt it. They have confidence that they will win the flag; they don't need to look sideways. We need to find the confidence that no matter what, we should win it this year. Not, "if we get Freo, it'll give us a great shot". Expect and prepare for and the worst case scenario. Anything else is a bonus.

I feel that this is our big chance. The reasons we will take that chance will come from within, not without. Go Pies!

I suspect PieLebo is convinced that we're going to win the GF, no matter whom we meet en route. This thread is just his way of wallowing in the delight of our current position - one of multiple angles on the same theme of the next Pies premiership.:thumbsu: But he's managed to tease out plenty of interesting views here.

I'm just hoping that teams who habitually play at Etihad will all be in agony by finals time.:)

i hope so :D

would be an absolute dream. no luke ball kicking it after the siren from 50 bullshit though. travis cloke bog with 7 goals, collingwood by 10 goals!

I am not sure the Dogs would be the Best Choice after there Week they had it could bring them together and could become a Dark Horse for the Flag

By round 22 we will have played 5 of the current top 8 twice, beaten all but Geelong (who we still have a chance to beat) in the current top 8 at least once, played 6 of last years top 8 twice and twice played for top spot and won.

I think we should not care who we play.

Thats the thing. MM does have to be tactical about this, because unlike Geelong, we aren't quite the stand out best side in the AFL at the moment. If, hypothetically, we continue on our trend, and development, and become the best side in the AFL in one or two seasons, we'd have the Geelong mentality where we know we're the best, but at the current time, its more-so, whoever is more switched on during that day that'll win a Coll, StK and Cats game, you cannot separate those three.

If, hypothetically, we win the flag this year, and with Geelong and St Kilda's aging list and decline, Collingwood will be the top side, THATS when we don't have to worry about the opposition, because at our best, we'll beat anyone.

Also, I'm not claiming that we'll finish first, and I'm not being disrespectful to Carlton, Adelaide, Hawthorn and Essendon, I'm just curious to know how you'd like to see the start of the finals pan out.

PS: If Collingwood don't finish top four, I'll look like an idiot, but I can categorically tell you there is no way in hell we won't finish top four :)

Understand the sentiment Lebo and as mentioned, I've thought a lot about how the top 4 placings could best aid us but I still respectfully disagree. Our window is open. We know we can beat anyone going on our results this year. Granted Geelong still look awesome but we showed enough in our match this year to suggest that we can take them. We do our best to prepare ourselves for the finals and deal with what comes. That's the psyche the team needs to adopt. NOT thinking about who they want most. That is inherently inviting fear and intimidation for when they don't get who they want. Have faith. We are good enough this year. Just have to put it all together on the day(s) and ask for that little bit of luck which is present in any winning premiership campaign.

Agreed with both posts.. At our best we can beat anyone on the day... Smashed one of the premiership favourites by 8 goals.. they beat Geelong a couple weeks before that, ffs even Carlton beat Geelong.

The only teams we havent beaten yet this year are Brisbane (who cares) and Geelong. and all of our losses and draw were made on our own fault for innaccuracy. We had more of the ball almost in all those games.

Agree fully.

to finished 1st we would need to win the next five games i would think. its a massive ask.. stop getting ahead of yourselfs

Looking at the Dogs on the weekend, they are the other team that is playing at top-four standard. Even Hawthorn looked a bit ragged and disorganized compared to the other 4. I'm afraid we'll be playing the dogs if we finish top, or Aints or Geelong if we don't. Hopefully Aints, Geelong is our biggest threat but if it's the doggies that will be a dangerous hurdle to overcome make no mistake. I think they are more a danger to Cwood than the Aints at this stage, look very polished and good on every line. I don't think they are quite up to our standard but anything could happen on the day.
