I know there's already a Fergus thread but this isn't so much about Fergus so if you could keep it free from merging it would be good. :)

Lets say we trade with Melbourne and They offer us a straight swap with Jared Rivers. We then slot Rivers in at CHB - could we then turn Nathan Bock into the bustling Power Forward we so desperately crave?

He's got the body (absolute tank)

He's got the marking ability

He's still only young

He's a pretty good kick (better than Fergus)

I actually think this one could be a winner

Thoughts?

I like Bock's rebound from defence, that suits our style of game. I reckon he is better suited to defence than attack.

As do I Kane but Rivers is hardly a dud and if Bocky could be turned into a power forward who crashes packs then he'd be the icing on the cake.

You don't think he'd make it as a forward? Cos' for some reason I see this potential in him to make it

Maybe it's just scraping the barrell :(

I think there is some merit in Bock playing forward. Like Hentschel and McGregor, he could be flexible enough to play back or forward in the long term. I cant see Melbourne letting Rivers go though, and definately not in a straight swap for Watts. Rivers won the rising star last year. If he were ours, we certainly wouldnt entertain the thought. We would need to sweeten that deal big time. As I said though, Bock going forward is pretty likely to happen at some stage.

I would prefer to keep Bock at CHB but you never know. Things change. Rivers would be expensive, you would have to offer more than Watts & CHB is not a problem for us now.

Bock has been played up forward with mixed success. The minute he was moved permanently to CHB was when we saw his true ability. Moving him forward again may see him resume his erratic form and lead us to questioning his ability again.

Not necessarily, I think he just needed time to find his feet and gain confidence. Not to mention he had developed a lot physically between his forward / CHB moves.

I think we should leave him at CHB predominantly, but he could play forward should circumstances require it.

NB:
Our CHB = 2 goals with his first 2 kicks.
Our FB = 3 goals with his first 3 kicks.
:)

I wouldn't play Rivers at CHB, I'd play him as the 3rd tall in defence. That's what suits him. Infact, he's pretty much a clone of Bassett but he is more skillful. If we were to somehow get Rivers home and play him in the same role that Bassett has played for us this year, he would be a multiple AA for sure. Imagine a defence of Rutten, Bock, Rivers for the next 10 years. Mouthwatering.

First and foremost, I very much doubt that we will get Rivers. He signed a 3 year contract at the end of last year and he still has 2 years to run on it. Melbourne has gaping holes in their backline and I seriously doubt they would trade their most promising defender (who is happy where he is) unless he demands to be traded.

Secondly, I see Bock as a defender who could pinch hit up forward as a shock tactic. He is not good enough at marking the ball to be considered a genuine forward prospect. I always saw Bock being a pretty good option as a 3rd tall in defence. He has done well at CHB this year but I always saw Bock as a possibly replacement for Bassett when he retires. Bass is 28 or 29, so one would think he doesn't have a hell of a lost left in the tank. Possibly 3-4 years at most. If by some silly chance we did get Rivers for Watts, then I don't see a reason why Rutten, Rivers and Bock can't be the cornerstone of our defence for years to come ;)

Actually with kenny, Rutts, Bock and Trent we have a fair bit of versility. All could play at either end. Who knows with a few years development Gibson could fill the monster FB/CHB role that Rutts has done so well in this year. This would then allow Rutts to go forward, where I have a feeling, he would be more than handy. I'm talking in a few years mind you.

Im not so sure Rivers for watts would be such as great trade. A potentially 1st rate CHF for a third string backman. I think I would rather Motlop.

It is also potentially another Bassett for Brent Williams trade.

If we got offered that I'd do it in a heartbeat. Rivers is proven at AFL level, even under trying cirumstances (being played before his body has developed), Watts isn't.

Well lets put it this way. At least this way you are getting a Key forward for a key backman rather than key forward for a flanker.

I am not a big Rivers fan either but I rather have him than Motlop

I think Bock is a couple of years away from being a genuine forward option. I see him a bit like Kenny before he went to CHB. He is far better at being led to the ball at this stage than making the play.

I still think Bock will make a better half back flanker than CHB - as Stiffy said more like a Nathan Bassett role. His main attribute is his rebound out of defence as opposed to his defensive skills.
