Toast Quinton Narkle

Narkle is clearly the better player on talent but dahl does well at the fwd pressure parts of his role and my guess is the coaches are not sure if narkle would be as effective at that part of the role as he has been as an offensive mid. That is the likely reason much as i disagree with it.

It's seriously over rated if that's all you can do.

because he got dropped after probably the best 2 games of his career
For PFD, Duncan, MOC and BLitz.

Its not like he got dropped for Zuthrie.

GO Catters

no of course not, and I am aware that guys like Higgins, Atkins and Dahlhaus play slightly different roles but I'd rather have Narkle in the middle with PFD or MOC playing in Atkins or Dahl's role (until fully match fit) to allow Narkle more time in the team.

Did anyone hear a Chris Scott on Narkle on Ch7 News yesterday? He said he’d like Narkle to be in the team consistently, but it wasn’t that easy. He then said “Quinton will play a lot of senior football for Geelong”. Code for ‘Stay with us’ or wishful thinking?

Appealing to Narkle through the media has a slight smell of desperation to me.

Unfortunately I’ve heard him say similar about past players, notably one Tim Kelly.

I think the club is/would be quietly confident no other club is ahead of Geelong in the queue for his signature seeing as no one was interested in him after last season. Maybe that's mistaken but I think it's probably about right. Obviously after some of his performances this season there'll be a little more interest but I don't think many clubs would go from not wanting a player at all to going hard after them after 2.5 high quality games. I definitely think a few teams will be watching and waiting but if we want to put an offer to him ours will probably be the first he sees.

This would probably hold together if it weren't for the public comments of his manager recently. Gave the distinct impression that he's very interested in exploring all other options. Certainly a way of trying to 'big up' Quinton's next contract, which you can't see happening if he stays in the hoops. Of course, Carr only cares about the size and length of the contract, not what's necessarily best for Narkle's career.

Still, I'm also far from convinced that there's going to be other clubs kicking lumps out of each other to get him onto their list. Despite the protestations of some here, it's hardly like he's played great footy at the top level against some of the best teams going around. Two very impressive games against also-rans in 2021 appears to have elevated him to the stratosphere in some people's estimations.

And I say all this as a Narkle fan. He sits right on the fringe of our best 22 at this point. And that's reflected in him being in and out of the team so far in 2021. Inevitable injuries probably see him get further games throughout the back end of the season. Hope he shows more in those matches that sees him win himself an AFL future, preferably with us but ultimately with anyone.

And there has been criticism on this board of Narkle being in and out of the team as it would discourage him. Scott has now given him very public praise.

That'll mostly be down to bias and outsiders looking in.
We have no idea of the talk within the club so we really have no idea on his attitude or reaction to his selection/non-selection.

Managers' comments are close to the last thing I'd ever pay attention to honestly. Also remember that those comments were before he had his good performances so it is highly likely that at that point in time he had nothing on the table. Still might not.

It's interesting to think back to all the fringe players who've left Geelong. Not too many have had careers worth anything. Hamling is the one that comes to mind but I'm struggling to think of another. You could say Linc McCarthy but I'd argue he was best 22 when he left. A bit of a cautionary tale although I'm probably forgetting others.

Fair enough. Fact is, though, unless Narkle can't get a contract with anyone apart from us for next season, I'm certain Carr would believe that he can get more money (and probably a longer deal) elsewhere. Both of which are factors that are clearly in the manager's favour. On this basis, I believe he will be shopping Quinton around hard, despite the fact that there might still be a lack of strong interest from others.

When you add to that the fact that Narkle might prefer to get another 'similar' deal elsewhere on even the off chance that there's more prospect of ongoing senior games at said club, I don't think it's that outlandish to see him as 80/20 for leaving at this point. Put it this way, if there's even a comparable deal put on the table by another club, I see him probably taking it. And, in that case, I definitely believe his manager's advice would be to cut ties rather than to stick around.

Or he'll look at the age of the guys in our midfield and think his best chance of a regular game in the future is to stay.

Getting him fit for the long term with Cockatoo... Sometime I get this feeling he just fends the question off. He knows what the chances are if he doesnt play. Id say his care factor is in idle. Fringe player..stays goes .. whatever

Jonathan Simpkin won a flag at Hawthorn. But you're right. If Narkle were to leave he'd more than likely end up like Taylor Hunt, Dawson Simpson, Walker, Lang, Murdoch, and the myriad other players that left for 'more opportunity' rather than knuckle down and earn it.

My sense is we'll see Narkle go basically head-to-head against Parish tonight. Similar age midfielders, both out of contract. It's basically an audition.
