As batshit as a tall sub is, I feel like our only real successful subs this year have been talls

Ladhams against Freo in Perth earlier in the year, came on and took over from Grundy and we came storming home

Francis against Port when he came on and kicked 3 as we nearly came back.

Every time we've tried a ground level player as sub they've generally just looked lost. Except Bice I guess.

I agree it seems counter-productive to what the sub is supposed to be for but given the general incompetence of our talls, maybe having a tall on stand by works for us
Sheldrick was sub against Freo, Grundy was subbed out

Francis was sub for a game and came on and did well

Sub isn't dropped.

He was brought back vs Port and played further up the ground because we were playing with 3 KPDs, both Wicks and Cunningham, plus Blakey.

Last week, while Francis went down there a bit, we were down a KPD so there was a spot opened up and he reverted to deeper in D50.

This week we revert to 3 KPDs, plus Wicks, Cunningham, Mills, Blakey playing as I said.

No doubt the club rates him in defence, but it moved him when the team has the same makeup as this week.

That said, I suspect we'll have Buller as sub, or be even more dumb and it'll be Gus.

Sub is "soft dropped".

I just think they rate Roberts in general really, not in any particular position but just as someone who can find the ball and use it well (I'll reiterate my point from a few months earlier that I personally have never seen this clean ball use from Roberts.)

If Sheldrick is sub it can only be because they want to manage him a bit, but even that is unlikely given he just had a bye two weeks ago.

Maybe Hamling could come on as sub given he can play at either end? Gives us a bit of flexibility maybe.

Just spitballing really.

"Gus, we know you've been worried about job security, but we'd now like to offer you a 2-year deal"

"Oh, and you're being made sub".

SCG under heat lamps is the best it's looked all season.

Why T F did it take this long to get it sorted?
Dollars I am betting

Thats boring can we please be mathematically finished so that we can actually debut some guys
Enough of that glass half empty attitude. We're not done yet.

To quote Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill - PM of the UK during WW2, First Lord of the Admiralty during WW1 and overseer of the Gallipoli Campaign (for which he was subequently demoted). Die-hard Swans supporter

"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

It's a tricky situation, because I don't think we should make selection decisions based on trying to appease out-of-contract players. I just really don't know what the logic behind making Sheldrick sub would be.

Because people naturally don't do their job to the endth degree until they're under the spotlight.

Groundskeeper would've been cringing listening to the commentary thinking 'ahh shit'

Nah it's budget IMO.

I think Roberts is rated higher internally than he is amongst the fans. He was sick and missed a game, and brought straight back. I doubt he gets dropped again just two games later.
You can see why he's rated, he's got some very professional attributes. But I also think the coaching group has to be blind to not see him having regular moments of deer in the headlights that we're seeing.. Maybe both suffer from the same thing:eyes:

Don't mind him trying to find form in the 1's but just odd that some others are being given harsher treatment. His form for majority of the year has been very droppable. Not sure what Ollie was supposed do to with his time on ground to warrant re-selection whilst Roberts keeps costing us a handful of moments like clockwork atm yet has no case to answer. The year is done, may as well test the field and see what Ollie can do after his wake up call.

Florent hasn't done anything to earn that yet. He's been good in the VFL but not demanded selection. He only played last week because we had two eleventh hour injuries with no one else available to come in really. I think the plan has otherwise been to keep him in the VFL and let him work on what he needs to work on.

And in fairness to Roberts, I don't agree with your parallels between he and Florent and your conclusion that there is some kind of double standard going on. I think both can butcher it, but Roberts can find the ball, he was leading our disposals for most of the year. Florent can not find the ball. He was made sub after a month in which he averaged only 15 disposals. You may recall he was then given a reprieve in the Melbourne game after being sub the week before, and with that chance he was given, he had 13 disposals.

So I don't think the two are the same. I think there is a big difference between a player who is getting involved and at least trying to make a difference but lacking effectiveness, and a player who isn't getting involved and then being ineffective when he is involved.

I'm a pretty big Roberts fan. So I may have bias.

However I reckon he's up there with the most committed and selfless player on the list.

He reminds me of Lloyd 5/6 years ago.

But he hasn't been named sub yet! I don't understand all the teeth gnashing on here every single week about poor Gus being the sub - except he hasn't been since round 9.
How about you all take a deep breath and at least wait until the sub is actually announced before losing it!

In fairness Jewels the whole point I was making was that I don't think Sheldrick will be sub.

I think Buller will be.

I thought JJ’s role would have a bearing on the choice of sub.

If he tags Clark, he’s not part of the midfield rotation.

If he goes to Serong or Brayshaw, he is.

Sorry Caesar, didn't get that at all.
Point still stands though, that every week there continues to be all this angst on here about Gus being named the sub which he hasn't been for 6 weeks.

In the Rd 2 game JJ went to Serong;

Jordan had more disposals than Serong, double the clearances and more I50s and rebound 50s.
Indeed Serong had fewer clearances than in any other game this season. He also only registered 12 effective disposals compared to his average of 19.
Rare for a tagger, the coaches rated him =2nd best on ground.

Going into last week Ed Richards was 4th in the coaches votes.JJ shut him down.
Currently Serong is 4th.

Personally I'm backing James to go to Serong and get the job done.
