I have a new algorithm for you Final Siren. The team that beats North in a prelim NEVER wins the flag.
14, 07, 00, 97, 94 etc.
The only team to defy this in the last 20 years was Carlton in 95. Yeh exactly.

So wed appreciate a thanks now Hawthorn fans ;) Or just to allow us to gloat as the only team not to lose to the premier
Then we can call it even

The Squiggle needs to be re-gigged in order to account for 'Faux ladder finishing positions', fabricated by 'manufactured' AFL draws, incommensurate with actual ladder finishing positions from the years prior!....Perhaps we could refer to such a factor from now on as the 'Bottom of the Harbour anomaly'???
My deepest sympathies, it's nothing less than a tragedy that you've already forgotten that Hawthorn won yesterday.

Actually I reckon I'm up to my 8th replay already & still don't feel satiated as yet....It'll take a while for the euphoria & Ecstasy to wear off, though I doubt that'll happen any time soon, much less this week.

Mr Squiggle clearly has a few 'glitches' he needs to work through given one of the most comprehensive Grand finals performances I have yet to witness has laid to waste his dire prediction to the contrary.

As far as commiserations are concerned, then both you & the Squiggle have mine.....As for my amnesia, well, the 9th replay might remedy that!:)

The squiggle got the tip wrong, however it has placed Hawthorn in the premiership sweet spot all year. So in that way it got it right.
The main squiggle (istate) got the tip right. It's just all the other ones that have typically had better success with finals that flopped.

Gloat away. It kept us sane in 2007 when Geelong won everything. Maybe it means you will roll us in the GF next year?

In defence of the squiggle the individual game tipping is a side function.

Its main function is to demonstrate graphically what we feel about how a season is going for each team, whether theres a huge gap between the top team and the rest or if its an even season.

Upper left and lower right teams beat each other equally in grand finals in my quick analysis.

Yep, and it's been pointed out that it's only as good as a solid tipster, and that although it picks the lines more often then not it does't do it to the extent of beating the bookie's take.

It's more meant to be a visiual interpretation of a teams' progression and standing relative, offensively and defensively, compared to the other team. It isn't a power rankings or tipping guide.

Congratulations Hawthorn, AFL Premiers 2014!

Interactive squiggle!

There are games you think could easily have gone either way, and then there are games like the 2014 Grand Final, which you'd think could be replayed a hundred times before getting a different result. And even then, it might require Luke Hodge to be hit by a car on the way to the ground.

The result sends Hawthorn even higher on the squiggle, slipping past Geelong 2007 in terms of attacking power and into the very top bracket of premiership teams of the last 20 years.

Sydney's failure to stop the rain of Hawk goals sends them leftward, and looking a bit more like a balanced team than the very defensive-minded one we saw for most of the year.

So once again an attacking team defeats a defensive team! I saw a newspaper article even this week saying defence usually wins premierships, but the counter-examples just keep piling up: in the last 6 years we've had Hawthorn 2014, Hawthorn 2013, Geelong 2011, and Geelong 2009. Meanwhile, that defensive-first area of the chart continues to be a graveyard for flag hopes, littered with the broken dreams of Sydney 2014, Fremantle 2012, 2013, and 2014, St Kilda 2009, 2010, and 2011, and Adelaide 2009 and 2010.

The squiggle GF tip was wrong, which means OFFDEF-75 now has an 8-2 record over the last 10 years (still the best in my stable). It's a bit disconcerting when you get a tip wrong by over 10 goals, especially a Grand Final, because it implies that you don't know anything about football.

In terms of history, though, the Hawks charted best all year in terms of sitting near the most premiership cups, and look like nothing other than the deserved premier. For next year's squiggle, the 20-year-old West Coast 1994 (a very defensive cup, to the point of being an outlier) will drop off to be replaced by Hawthorn's new 2014 flag, which will shift the squiggle premiership centre of gravity even higher - and make Sydney 2005 look even lonelier.

It's remarkable that in this extremely defensive season - with average scores lower than they've been since the 1960s - it's the clearly most attacking team that claims the flag, walloping the most defensive team. And the greatest scare they got was from the Power, the second-most attack-focused team. Surely this is the end for the trend toward lower scores and tighter defences? Because there are a whole bunch of teams - Richmond, Geelong, North Melbourne, Sydney, Fremantle, and even Essendon for a while - who are comparable to the Hawks in terms of restricting opposition scoring. What they lack that Hawthorn have is the ability to kick a crapload of goals.

Thanks for following Squiggle 2014; you guys have made it lots of fun!

My principal critique of the Swans this season & their supposedly 'superior' defence so far as the squiggle is concerned; is that they only played most other top 4 sides at home & only after these sides had 3x6 day breaks....That combined with playing GWSx2 served to inflate their defence as somewhat better than what it actually was....All along, my position was that the Swans 'Draw' was an arbitrary anomoly which rendered an inaccurate indicator of the actual state of affairs between these 2 sides...When it came to the 'crunch' they were found wanting!

Like Geelong under Thompson, Hawthorn have a ridiculous number of medium forwards and midfielders who can turn difficult opportunities into goals.

Something Freo lacks almost entirely and Sydney didn't have enough of.

My theory is that to win the premiership, you want to have a deep spread of goal kickers who can average around 1 goal per game.

Complete football wins premierships.

I an era when everyone is attacking, the best defensive teams win.

In the modern defensive era, it is the team that can attack which triumphs.

I'm curious how the squiggle ranks this premiership amongst all others
