Round 2, 2016

Animated!

A crazy week with something for everyone, even if that something was a bullshit ****ing ****-gagging loss that should never have happened.

Good week for Hawthorn (remember them?), who put some space between themselves and everyone else; for the Bulldogs, who caused the squiggle fall even deeper in love after restricting a second successive opponent to the 30s; for Adelaide, who again showed off their remarkable firepower; and for Sydney, who did what was required and then a little more.

Also a good week for the Suns, who still have a long way to go, but displayed a lot of vertical movement.

Reality checks for Geelong, who don't actually move much because the squiggle was never aware of the off-season hype in the first place; St. Kilda, who go right back to where they were; and Melbourne, who... well, let us all just offer a moment of silence.

Bad week for the West Australians. Fremantle looked even worse than the most gloomy pessimists believed, and West Coast blew a chance to establish themselves at the top.

Ladder Predictor has the Doggies Top 2 already!

And Flagpole is bumpier than usual, with West Coast slipping down to 4th in terms of expected H&A finishing position but still rated a strong flag chance, and Adelaide enjoying a speculative rise on the back of their ability to score heavily.

Can we trust the squiggle any sooner than the season ladder?

Also best most predictive model last 2 years, especially last year when Roby stopped posting margins because his system was copping a right old pasting.

FootyMaths Blog I think was tipping very strongly towards the end of the season.

I still chuckle every now and then at Roby's predictor world cup; his won but was far and away the worst performing.

Really like to see the dogs play against a team that can score heavily. So far they've played the team that finishes first in last years H&A and averaged the lowest winning score in **** knows how long, and a team that can't score.

I agree, but I'd suggest that holding two teams under 40 in a row is a pretty remarkable feat no matter who you play against. West Coast were the only team to hold two sides to less than 40 points over the course of the entire 2015 season, let alone consecutively. It's also the second-best points against total after two games in history.

Hard to make any sound conclusions about our defence based on these two games, I agree, but it has still been a pretty incredible fortnight for us defensively.

It's a minefield for the Tigers. If they finish 5th-8th, lots of EF pressure and mockery. If they miss finals, mockery. If they finish 9th, immense mockery.

Come and join the warm sanctuary that is the womb of expected bottom 3 finishes brother :thumbsu:

It's interesting to see what it takes for the squiggle to rate Sydney & Bulldog's flag chances. It seems despite some good results they are still not attacking enough.

They need to score big against a team rated strongly in defence to move up significantly. If they can kick 100+ against the Hawks this week they should fly up a bit and if they can keep us to a pretty low score they'll really be heading into the premiership zone.

Might have played exceedingly average for the most part of Friday night... But the squiggle shows the pies just a little bit of that sweet, sweet north-east movement.

Gee I wonder who popular support would be with in a Dogs v Hawks decider. Tough one that

That's easy. Everyone will be barracking for the Dogs except for North supporters who will be explaining how the Dogs are only making the Grand Final because they are copying us while suddenly forgiving Josh Gibson for shooting Bambi and hoping he can lead the Hawks into history.

Very hard to tell, such a small sample size. Saints aren't a powerhouse and Fremantle (while not writing them off yet) there is nothing so far about them that indicates they will be one this year. The same can be said of almost any win at this time of year though, no current formline when it comes down to it.

Can only beat who is in front of you though and they've done it handsomely.

Pessimistic there's no way either team will be undefeated by round 15, neither are certainly pulling a St Kilda out of their collective backsides from the noughties, or a super dominant Geelong that couldn't be stopped, or the irreproachable Blues from '95, or the absurd Dons from 2000.

Dannnnnnnnnn
I'd be happy as a supporter to be sitting on 2 or 3 losses at that point, even 11-4 would be acceptable considering that we're going to be spending a lot of time developing our youngsters. Pretty amazing to read that the Swans have so far fielded younger teams than both their opponents (one of the youngest in the league) and thumped them.

Exciting years ahead for Dogs & Swans, especially if either can knock Hawks off of their perch. This weekend is going to be crucial for both.

Final Siren For curiosity's sake, what sort of win against the Hawks would it take to put the Dogs in the 'premiership zone'?
VERY roughly, if you do twice as well as the squiggle expects, you move about five points on the chart. For example, this week the Suns rose that much for scoring 126 against Fremantle instead of the expected 62, and the Bulldogs moved rightwards that much after keeping St Kilda to 36 instead of 69.

The squiggle tip is Dogs 77 - 90 Hawks, so if the Dogs do twice as well on both counts, i.e. win 154-45, they will probably overtake a falling Hawthorn. This would still be outside the cluster of premiership cups, but pretty close to it.

Just a suggestion Final Siren for the squiggle. Is it possible for you to allow us to edit the results for upcoming round and see what effect that has on the squiggle? i.e. for the WB vs Hawks game we could edit the result line to be 154-45 and see what the squiggle would do? Great job as always though love the squiggle.
