I normally download the guide off the vic racing website on a thursday to have an early look and then get best bets on a friday morning but i need a change. Its all becoming a bit stale...

What do you guys find is the best in both online & hard copy?.

KP,

I religiously buy a Winning Post on Friday morning on the way to work. Detailed form with speed maps (albeit generic, with no explanation)

As for ones from the newspapers, cannot go past the HeraldSun.

Over the years I've tried a few of the hard copies - Sportsman, the Truth (just for the form guide of course), Best Bets, Winning Post, Sporting Globe and the Daily Newspapers.

Always had a soft spot for Best Bets, especially if you're going to the races. Pretty user-friendly.

Sportsman has the most detailed information though, IMO.

I buy the Sportsman but its useless if you dont know how to read a formguide.

Best Bets is very good, offers a video comment for each horse, Sportsman has each horses last 10 starts, barrier trails & in major races it as each horses last 20. Plus it has chart form which breaks down the stats of each horse.

Any changes in particular you would like to see to Best Bets?

(I work at Best Bets/Winning Post so I can pass on any feedback to the relevant people).

Making sure you spell Luke Nolen's name correctly on the front page would be a good start. ;)

I tend to use online formguides these days, most notably Expertform, but this thread prompted me to go out this morning and pick up a copy of Best Bets for the first time in a few years.

I'm enjoying the read, the analysis and the video comments, but the very regular spelling errors/typos are a little annoying.

I know it's irrelevant to the quality of the form and i know there is little turnaround time between the fields being released and it needing to hit the presses, but you'd think such a glaring error on the front page would be spotted (especially since the accompanying photo very clearly spells Nolen correctly).

Yes getting Luke Nolen's name wrong on the cover is not good at all! I have given the both graphic artist and the guy who checks the cover a whack behind the ears!

The spelling errors tend to happen/not get picked up due the short time the analysts/editors etc have to complete their work. Nevertheless I've asked the production team to keep a closer eye out for them.

haha not at all best bets is great. I ended up getting it again this morning!.

But if you could pass on that KardiniaPark from the internet would like pete lucas fired that would be great. :thumbsu:

In the Winning Post, I would like to see a small form guide / preview for the weekend's meetings at Hong Kong and Singapore. If Allform can do it, Winning Post can. In most other areas Winning Post is superior...

Personally Winning Post is my favourite, pick it up Thursday arvo about 5pm, gives me everything I want for Friday night if they're on at the Valley, Saturday and Sunday. Find the form lay out pretty user friendly and the comments good.

If I'm going to the races also grab a copy of Best Bets. It sh!ts all over the racebook. A lot easier to use than a newspaper and contains all the detail you need. The only thing that bugs me with BB is that I pretty much only bet on Victorian racing and they sometimes just leave the Victorian Provincial form out. Even when its listed on the cover as being in there. I think thats pretty poor. I like the last two weeks where theyve put fields in for GC and Ascot though thats a good move.

I've bought the Sportsman once, a messy publication, too much detail and you just dont need it all. Plus its not in liftout format so its pretty messy when you have to go tearing the relevant pages out.

Has anyone bought the new $2 racing guide "allform"? Has short form for every gallop, trot and dog meet the TAB covers over Friday, Saturday and Sunday (apart from the UK meets). Last week was only their first edition, however form for Race 10 at Caulfield was nowhere to be seen! Also, in the short form for Singapore, several horses were missing comments (including a winner).

It has been discussed previously, so it may happen one day.

The reason that has happened is due to spacing issues in the mag. BB is 132 pages long and if the fields are large they run out of room so the provincial were given the boot so to speak. Happened a couple of week ago when there was 10 races at both Melb and Sydney.

The covers are actually printed a few weeks beforehand, hence why the meeting is still mentioned on the cover. I've argued that the provincials should not be mentioned on the cover just in case..
If it happens again (Which i hope it doesn't) give Customer Service a call or email and you will be emailed the racebook form for it.

Yeah, it looks likely that they will continue to be included from now on.

Cheers for that. Yeah, its happened a few times in the last month but the last two weeks its seemed to be in there which keeps me happy!

While you're around, is there any plan to make Best Bets the racebook on course in the city in the near future? I've noticed a few country clubs already use it for their racebook (Cranbourne and Mornington).

Yeah, bought it last week for a look. To be honest it was a bit messy I thought. Form all over the place. They should have it so in a 'liftout' format - Friday, Friday night, Saturday, Sat night, Sunday. The form was scattered everywhere. If I could pull half a dozen pages out and go to the TAB on a Friday night for a few bets then it might be useful. The tips were just from the AAP and so were the comments. I haven't bought it this week, dont need it!

Yes and No.

Best Bets and Winning Post are now owned by TVN, who is owned by the 3 Melb & 2 Syd Race Clubs... so it would make sense... and it has been discussed with the clubs.

But well as some of you may know racing is full of politics so it still hasn't happened yet..

The production the age puts out during the spring carnival is better than the herald sun IMO, for the rest of the year hearld sun wins hands down

Good stuff. :D

As i said in my initial post, i understand why it happens, it's just a little annoying.
It certainly wouldn't stop me buying it as i've enjoyed reading it today (whilst i was supposed to be working).

Also, i know space constraints are an issue, but i'd be more inclined to buy 'Best Bets' every week if there was a small formguide for Friday's Victorian provincial meeting in it (similar to the ones in this edition for tomorrows Yarra Valley and Kembla Grange meetings).

Punters in Victoria would be more interested in that than they are in seeing the fields for Albury, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

I agree mate. Saw The Age liftout this arvo and was impressed with the improvement, no doubt only temporary during the carnival.

but surely there is a list of horses that might accept for the race, i.e. like there is for the Melbourne Cup.
Its not a "classic" so no, in fact I think its now a group 2.

Only the classics are like the Melbourne Cup, so Derbys, Oaks, Guineas, City Cups & the Cox Plate.
