Re: Ponting - why not retire now? End of the Test series in Australia, retire with a ton, go out on his own terms and go out on top. :thumbsu:
Because its Ricky Ponting, theres no way hes going out now.

So many d*ckhead crows 'fans' like this, one of the main reasons I hate the club so much. Every year rate themselves as contenders, regardless of how shit the team is actually looking  Would make up a good 30% or more of their 'fans'.
Also agree that Freo (and Port) have more 'true' supporters. My explanations for this are:

a) the big clubs (Adelaide and WC) are more general and represent more of the state I guess
b) the big clubs have both been around longer, hence grabbing 'half-supporters' and their families first
c) obviously have more fans, members, money and also success than the smaller clubs

Despite the fact that Port are struggling it's good to see the true faithful, such as myself, still go out every week rain, hail or shine. We're bred tougher and all the bad times make the good times sweeter.

Bred tougher?? Because Port are getting huge crowds....Every team has supporters who still turn up when they're getting flogged every week. If Port fans were 'bread tougher' they wouldn't need tarps to cover up the empty seats every week.

I'm with PAFC on Ponting. Why should he retire now? Just because a series is ending he's doing well doesn't mean that he should 'go out on top' now. He's batting brilliantly, and obviously has a lot of runs left in the tank. We need a few experienced guys in the team like him and Hussey. If Usman and Hughes were in the team right now, we'd be doing significantly worse IMO- no disrespect to them, they're future champions.

But if his form still warrants it, why not 'go out on top' with an Ashes victory on home soil? Would be the perfect ending to a great career.

I agree with all of this.

Do you see where I'm coming from now Andonis?

But we have been. Last year was the closest we have come to a grand final in years! But lmach's mob had to stop our little run! TBH, every year, I don't expect great things from Carlton. They're missing a key forward, and basically all of our gameplay is based around Judd and all the #1 draft picks.

We are getting closer to a Grand Final. I can safely say that. I think 2014 or 2015 we'll be adding a 17th cup to our storage cabinet at Princes Park!

Storage cabinet? Do you just keep your trophies with the mops and old cardboard boxes?

But the thing is we've never had huge crowds or been able to fill AAMI Stadium every week. Even in the glory days we'd rarely pull much more than 30,000 to a home match and we were top for 2 or 3 years. Of course finals were an exception though. Since 07 (our last year of finals) the crowds have gradually fallen off but they're still not massively smaller, usually still over 20,000. Adelaide on the other hand (and probably WC too, I don't pay that much attention) have much bigger deviations. Usually only just over 30,000 when they're struggling and a full house (40-50,000) when they're going well. ie a bigger proportion of Port fans will go any time than Crows fans
The other thing I was trying to get at is that most people in SA who barely follow footy will choose the Crows. Very few of these 'fair weather supporters' who only 'support' the team and show interest when they're winning are Port fans. Once again I'm sure the same principle applies in WA. Living in or around the Port Adelaide area is probably different but for most when coming to choose a team Adelaide is the obvious choice. These 'fans' that I speak of never (or rarely) actually attend matches or even watch them on TV all that often. The only time they will a bit more often is when the Crows are winning. No denying that they aren't true fans and that there aren't a heap more of these who go for the Crows than Port. The actual percentage of true fans (like us on here) for Port would undeniably be a lot higher than those who support Adelaide

What run? :o

They've taken to the Bulldogs' form of victory, winning at least 1 final and then declaring it a streak.

Meh, that streak meant nothing...

That was hands down one of the worst days of my life. Then a week later I could hear the final siren then the Port song at the 'G from my house.

Only good thing about that was the bears not taking our record.

As good a game as you'll ever get though. Had a bit of everything. Only games I can specifically remember that were about as good were the two Swans v Eagles GFs, especially 05 and its dramatic finish.

Took a bloody good team to beat them ;) If only we still had the likes of Tredrea, Wanganeen, the Burgoynes and Cornses, Lade, Schofield, Hardwick, Pickett, Wilson, Mahoney and Dew dominating every week.

On another note just bought my tickets for the cricket tomorrow :) Kinda hoping Tendulkar makes his ton just to be a part of more history at Adelaide Oval. Was already part of the first AFL match there. Such an awesome stadium

Looking back on it you're right, it was an amazing game but as an 8 year old I was less than thrilled. I'd also add the Brisbane v Saints game from 2004 and the draw *shudders* to the list of those memorable games.
