There are so many holes in that incident and as you said government has used it to take our privacy.
Your privacy should be the least of your concerns. Your right to free speech and to read information and make your own mind up about it has been under threat for years and in the wake of the Christchurch attacks there are some truly Orwellian laws being proposed here in Australia. For example reporting on "special intelligence operations", what happens to asylum seekers and any number of other controversial issues can get you into trouble.
(In NZ its now illegal to possess or distribute that prick from Grafton's manifesto. Its ridiculous. People who like that stuff can still get torrents, but the rest of us are isolated from it, unable to read it, understand it or learn to recognise those ideas.)
ASIO can detain and question you about anything and if you refuse to answer (or are unable to because of ignorance of the subject) then you can be detained in secret for a week. You don't have to be a terrorist. Anyone reporting on this operational activity is also liable for reporting it. You can be held in "preventative detention" for up to 2 weeks. That is you aren't arrested or charged but are held incommunicado. You might be able to contact one family member once to tell them you are safe but unable to be contacted.
