Yep, yep, yep, and yep.

Everyone who posts in this thread has some level of emotional investment. Admittedly, some more than others, but it's definitely a constant. As an infrequent contributor to this thread, and one who's often doing so just to make a joke, I rank pretty low on the scale myself. But I wouldn't be so blind, arrogant, or disingenuous to suggest that there's no emotional component there. You could discern that purely from the fact that I'm a regular reader of the thread, and by the likes I give to other posters.

Similarly, everyone who posts in this thread (re politics) has a degree of political bias. Even those who like to position themselves as some kind of middle ground pundits. All of us, to some degree, are influenced by emotion, political bias, and the media (and social media), and it's nigh on impossible to gauge exactly to what extent. Takes a special kind of delusion to suggest otherwise.

And Ryz, you're also spot on about the disappointing slide into binary discussion. Political discourse has become less an exchange of ideas, and more about 'winning' and reinforcing partisan lines. And of course social media has actively encouraged and facilitated that.

On a personal level, I'm torn because the partisan nature of political discussion on social media largely bores me, but as someone who has spent most of their adult life studying psycho-linguistics, it's also a gold mine. I genuinely marvel at the extent to which it inhibits self-awareness and introspection in terms of the language people use. To use one of the more prevalent examples, you will regularly have people on social media (and this thread) accusing others of being brainwashed by social media, while constantly peppering their own speech with social media-popularised terms like 'SJW', 'cuck', 'snowflake', etc. I'm sure I don't need to point out the irony in that to anyone.

Look at a more recent example of a social media-popularised term that seems to have currently captured some people's imagination - 'cancel culture'. Use that term to someone who doesn't spend a lot of time on social media and see the confused look you get.

You have people claiming to be open-minded and impartial.....while spending 95+% of their time focusing criticism on one side of the political spectrum. People claiming to be free of political bias and who like to accuse others of perpetuating the (to coin another popular social media term) 'left/right paradigm'.....while spending all their time attacking one side of politics and not the other.

When it comes to people trying to disavow emotional attachment and the influence that social media has had on them, it's a veritable ironyapalooza out there.

Hi TOD,

Are you referring to snake? :P

It was all my own words bro.
100% authentic.
I know I surprised myself
You won't find it on the internet.

No it wasn't. You ran unwitting node in a repetition network.

How exactly do you want me to reply?

?

Don't bother replying. Learn about what you are on about instead. For example. Actually study critical theory. Without the academic indoctrination. Spend six months reading about it, understanding how it works and what it is. Make up your own mind.

(And don't say that's what you've already done. That's not the point, you've made your mind up before you know what you are talking about.)

Fads is a good example of what's being discussed here. They were named **** after the slang term for cigarettes. **** wasn't a slur until reasonably recently, but since it is widely regarded as a slur now, it was a judicious name change especially given the younger generations don't relate it to cigarettes.

Attitudes change over time, and increased awareness can change the acceptability of some past terminology. A lot of the discussion in the past few pages is in relation to where the line is drawn re acceptability. Personally, I certainly don't know the answer to that. For example, to me Redskins seems an innocent name for red lollies, but perhaps others have stronger feelings on it.

You can literally say anything about white people and particularly white men and no one would give a sh*t. Not that they should but there’s nothing.
I do it regular and all sorts of people sook up about it.

Not on here as much as rl tho.

I thought that was specifically to remove the programming kids to smoke durries aspect of them. The little red bit that's spoked to be the burning end is gone too isn't it?

Got to say, its telling that more people are angry about these petty cancellings, but there was bugger all said about that mining company blowing up a ancient indigenous site last week.
There isn't much point even talking about that shit on this site any more as far as I'm concerned.

Redskins already had a previous "re-branding" years ago.

They kept the name but removed the Native American imagery from the packaging.

Yeah, come to think of it, I recall that was certainly a key driver. Changing a name that was becoming uncomfortable was in the conversation though.

I thought also it was due to the cigarette comparisons but not surprised if the former wasn't a factor

Coon cheese goes, but Cracker Barrell cheese stays.

Coincidence? I think not.
Coon isn't changing it's name, as things stand right now.
Redskins is a marketing ploy. It's not getting cancelled it's getting a makeover.

While I'm at it colonial aren't changing their name either. Blackhearts just stopped stocking it, which is a boutique wine shop chain that most on here never probably shop at anyway. It's overpriced, go to carwyns instead.

Pardon my ignorance, but what’s the issue with Chicos? Does that name have some sort of connotation, or is it just because it’s a brown jelly baby?

Because if it’s the latter then a rebrand wouldn’t do anything - it will still be a brown jelly baby after the name change.

Or is the change going to be to the lolly itself?

Or am I overthinking this?! 😂

Dunno. Reads like one of those segments on Sky News with Rita, Bolt and that other guy when they’re trying to be amusing, it really does

Don't discourage them. We don't want to see the death of the Aussie larrikan.
