Joaquin Phoenix's beautiful acceptance speech at tonight's Oscars. It's been hard to find a clip that plays here in Canada, so I don't know if it will for you guys down there, but it's been transcribed on a few news sites already, so I've copied and pasted it. I just feel like his words are important. Super important. So I hope everyone who reads this thread will give him a listen/or a read. Thanks. And thank you Mr. Phoenix. ❤

"I'm full of so much gratitude right now. I do not feel elevated above any of my fellow nominees, or anyone in this room, because we share the same love: The love of film. And this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. I don't know what I'd be without it.

"But I think the greatest gift that its given me and many of us in this room is the opportunity to use our voice for the voiceless. I've been thinking a lot about some of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively and I think at times we feel or are made to feel that we champion different causes. But for me, I see commonality.

"I think whether we're talking about gender and equality or racism or queer rights or indigenous rights or animal rights, we're talking about the fight against injustice. We're talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, or one species has the right to dominate, control and use and exploit another with impunity.

"I think that we've become very disconnected from the natural world. And many of us, what we're guilty of is an egocentric world view: The belief that we're the center of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth, we steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. And then we take her milk that's intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.

"And I think we fear the idea of personal change, because we think we have to sacrifice something, to give something up. But human beings at our best are so inventive and creative and ingenious. And I think that when we use love and compassion as our guiding principles, we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and to the environment.

"Now, I have been a scoundrel in my life. I have been a scoundrel, I've been selfish, I've been cruel at times, hard to work with and ungrateful. But so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. And I think that's when we're at our best: When we support each other, not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes, but when we help each other to grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other toward redemption. That is the best of humanity.

"I just – I want to – um – When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric: He said 'Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.' Thank you."

Every time I see an actor give a speech like that I think of Ricky Gervais....

Corrupted fair price shop owners used to provide the fingerprints and data to mastermind behind the racket, Bharat Chaudhary of Banaskantha, who used to take Rs1,000 to prepare each fingerprint cast from scans. The fingerprint casts were then used to imprint fingerprints of poor people and siphon off their ration from the public distribution system (PDS)

Every time I see an actor give a speech like that I think of Ricky Gervais....

You never see these vacuous tools pontificate about basic wages though.

My take is that he's taking the piss again and the airheads don't know any better.

Shouldn’t be taking the piss out of him for that mate.

Plenty of stupid stuff he's actually done for that.

He always reminds me of Tweak! From South Park tho, so it not surprising he had anxiety issues. Hope he gets it together.

Yeah, I get it. I have sympathy for his current situation and I realise the general theme of his messaging is probably positive and helpful.

But I would imagine that even many of his fans (though obviously not all) would see the irony in his current situation. This does not equate to no sympathy / laughing at him, it's just a recognition of the fact that "harden up" is indeed something he has preached.

Some of what he says is okay. Some is excellent. But he talks a lot of shit about things.

(He does stuff like spend 80% of a talk telling the audience not to blame others. To sort your own shit ou, live meaningful lives that aren't self centred but are challenging, pick yourself up again and again etc etc.

Then spends the last 20% doing the complete opposite of that. Unloading on whatever group of usual suspects has pissed him off that day. The complete opposite of what he has just said. When he sticks to psych related stuff he is good tho.)

The reality is he wouldn't criticise people for going thru what he's been thru.

It's what he does now that counts. How he picks himself up and gets on with it.

We all fall over. It's about how we get back up and keep walking and I think a big part of what motivates him is helping people do that.

So all the best to him.

Worth pointing out that Joaquin Phoenix has been a vegan since he was a little kid, and has also been a vocal and long-time vegan activist throughout his adult life and acting career. (Has also advocated for various other social causes, too.) Thought that was well known but perhaps not. Also made the award-winning doco, Earthlings, on the subject of human treatment of other species.

Joaquin is a man well known for some elaborate piss takes. I very much doubt that this is one of them. But hey, whatever helps people get through the day.

In what way?

You do know that River Phoenix died in his arms on a public sidewalk when Joaquin was 18 years old, and the 911 call he made while his brother was dying was played through the media relentlessly, to the point where Joaquin disappeared from the public view for years? You do know that he's been a lifelong vegan and defender of animal rights, and has advocated for causes dear to his heart for decades? Yes, he's also taken the piss out of everyone with his film "I'm Still Here", and the media he did leading up to it. But to suggest, as Snake has too in his above post, that he's being in any way disingenuous here is simply dead wrong.

Yes, Ricky Gervais is hilarious. His mocking of the Hollywood elite is spot on in a lot of cases. But not this one.

Anyways, I thought it was a beautiful speech, especially from a guy who has historically found interviews and public speaking quite challenging. I feel like much of what he said needs to be heard by more of us. I mean, really heard, in our hearts. Not just glossed over and fingers pointed in redirection from the meaning of his words. Not this time. The guy is genuine. At least give him that.

Where does this weird notion that psychological trauma validates public ethical positions arise from? It's a misleading, manipulative stunt on your behalf to gain support for your beliefs based upon empathy farmed from someone's death, rather than rational thinking. Every human on the planet experiences psychological trauma in their lives, does this mean they all speak universal truths? Did Adolph Hitler's world war one trauma, combined with his rejection as an artist, validate his view of the world?

I feel like much of what he said needs to be heard by more of us. I mean, really heard, in our hearts. Not just glossed over and fingers pointed in redirection from the meaning of his words. Not this time. The guy is genuine. At least give him that.

Oh please, someone hand me the Kleenex!!!

Let's all hold hands in a circle and channel our crown chakras!:D

The undisputed North BF king of virtue signaling delivers yet again!

I came out at what sounds like the same time as you, and I reckon we had it much easier financially. These little shits have things they expect as basics we would have viewed as unimaginable luxuries though.

Luxury... back in my day?!
Your brain is actually worth a fortune.

To be fair, circa 2000 when I left school we could also buy a 1br apartment with beach glimpses in Elwood for $110k.

Swings and roundabouts. I personally am very happy I didn’t have to grow up with a social media presence (not that it’s obligatory) and I’m sure I wouldn’t have coped with having sooo many excuses for inaction at my disposal. Working full-time and doing Uni at night was not exactly fun.

Climate Crisis Solved By New Jet That Runs On Liberal Hypocrisy

February 10th, 2020

article-5561-1.jpg

U.S.—The climate crisis has been getting worse, despite liberal elites' best efforts to fly all over the country in their private jets lecturing everybody about it.

There seemed to be no end in sight until a new tech startup, Hypocri-Fuel, introduced a private jet that runs on liberal hypocrisy.

"We just hook this bad boy up to Leo DiCaprio, Al Gore, Justin Trudeau, or any other of the thousands of progressive elites who refuse to change their lifestyles to match their beliefs, and presto -- plenty of fuel to go around," said the startup's CEO, Gus Perder. "One fuel-up can power a jet for over a year."

Perder said he was trying to figure out what resource the earth has that's nearly limitless when it hit him: the hypocrisy of rich lefties. "There is so much liberal hypocrisy to go around that we never have to worry about running out," he said. "Fossil fuels may go away in a few hundred years, and people are scared of nuclear, but we have an inexhaustible supply of liberal hypocrisy."

And every time one of these liberal elites gives a condescending Oscar speech or goes on a world tour in their private jet to tell people how bad they are for flying commercial and not running around in a Flinstones car, they're just generating more energy to power these new airplanes.

"It's a win-win for everybody -- liberals can keep lecturing people and actually be useful, and the rest of us can go on ignoring them while the planet cools substantially."

Conservative Man Checks Ben Shapiro's Page To Find Out What Should Outrage Him Today
June 26th, 2018
article-1916.jpg

VAN NUYS, CA—Local conservative man Bill Walder woke up this morning, made a cup of coffee, and immediately turned on his computer so he could check political pundit Ben Shapiro’s social media pages in order to learn what news items should be outraging him today.

“I always start my morning off right, by checking with Ben to see what I should be angrily posting about in all caps for the rest of the day,” Walder said as he scrolled through Shapiro’s feed. “Alright, looks like we’re mad about something a celebrity said, illegal immigrants, gun control, and the mainstream media.”
“Huh, not too far off from yesterday’s list,” he muttered, sources claim.
Walder took careful notes as he clicked through and read every article the conservative commentator posted, taking down facts, talking points, and zingers to “own the libs,” before he had finally become sufficiently angry for the day, according to sources.
At publishing time, Walder on his lunch break had pulled up his favorite video of Ben Shapiro, titled “WATCH AS BEN SHAPIRO TOTALLY DESTROYS A COMMUNIST,” to recharge his righteous anger long enough to get him through the rest of the day.

huh? whats to say foodies dont cook for themselves as well.
Im not sure if you've read other things I said but that throw away remark is not why I'd like to see a massive change in the way society and the restaurant industry coexist

However, I will point to the absurd amount of food delivery services, fast food, weekly specials and general dining culture in the cities of today, and my personal experience that a lot of young people do not like to cook for themselves.

so he is a vegan, whoop de do, personally i couldn't care less what someone wants to eat, its their choice, just dont try and ram it down every on else's throats, same with religion political views and sexuality.

and on that , i hear some people like a bloke ranting on the radio yesterday about how we steal calves from cows and subject them to long torturous lives milking them for our own use....

what a load of crap, if anyone really wants to see the type of like dairy cows have simply go through a drive through west gippland, watch em leisurely grazing away , half of them lying in the grass without a worry in the world, and come milking time, unprompted they casually waltz up to the dairy as they no theres a feed of grain up there for them, terrible life those dairy cows have.

fact is they have it better than most humans.

heh, heh, nice diversion, let's blame 'left-liberals' for climate change and planetary warming ...

fair enuff, prolly the people buying in take out every day are not really what i would define a foodies but everyone's definition is likely different. i love to do slow cooked meats, briskets, pulled pork, shanks and osso buco etc. these are generally not the type of foods fast food outlets deal with.
