It's got a lot going for it. I lived there for a few years and visit regularly. I'll probably retire there.
Beautiful part of the world really.

The truth is often muddled somewhere in the middle. In the end, it was their countries and countrymen, so it would be hard to be too critical for many.Look, I don't want to get too far into this but there is another side to the 'it was all horror' narrative. Most non-emigrants I speak to who lived it didn't think it was so bad, but of course that's all anecdotal, and limited to one country. Lots of people lived just really normal lives.
Anyway, for a light hearted take on how either side pitches its narratives about the other, I suggest you watch Comrade Detective. It's dubbed over by Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon Levitt and is an absolute pisser.
So a man, or men, out standing in their field, chuck a dart at a calendar, give each other a nod or a wink, and Robert's your mothers' brotherI take it to be the accepted best estimation as established by an independent panel of experts in the field of historical cartography. As always, the panel reserves the right to amend the 'best' estimate when, and if, new cartographic evidence becomes available.
Edit: I have added a note regarding my omission of 'cartographic' in the earlier post, and hope that this in no way diminishes the important point I was attempting to make. Thank you for your understanding.

Yes, I think you have a firm grasp of historical cartography, although an inclusion of a map would be useful for novices. Luckily, this practice has not at any time resulted in unexpected, or regrettable, consequences. So a man, or men, out standing in their field, chuck a dart at a calendar, give each other a nod or a wink, and Robert's your mothers' brother

I spent a fair bit of time living in the former East Germany in the years following reunification. Coming from a mixed migrant community/family myself, it was interesting, to say the least.Yep, and on the flip side many emigrants who left only to be confronted by poverty in the West also find it hard to be critical of our countries.
Many of the people I speak to felt they had better lives during than before or after. Got to remember these places went from brutal feudalism to rapid development to complete destitution in the 1990s. To this day they still face massive population exoduses and brain drain. Some seem shocked that people like my family have had to skip meals, live off baked beans, etc. It's all relative.

He knows the atrocities, we all do, he was talking about day-to-day life for the average citizens and that it was not as bad as it seemed.Suggest you look into what they did to the Ukrainians. As evil as anything done by the Nazis. What they did to the Polish was equally as horrific.
Have you heard the joke about the polish farmer who finds a genie lantern?
A Polish man finds a genie in a bottle, one decades-old joke goes. The genie offers him three wishes.
The Pole says, “I want the Chinese to invade Poland and then go back to China.”
So it happens.
For his next wish, the Pole also asks for the Chinese to invade Poland and then go home.
So it happens.
For his third wish, the Pole again asks for the Chinese to invade Poland and go home.
“I gave you three wishes,” the genie cries. “Why did you ask for the Chinese to invade Poland and then go home three times?”
“Because they had to march across Russia six times.”
They deliberately starved people to the point of cannibalism of their own children. I don’t say that lightly, it’s been proven by their own record keeping. Deliberately starving working class people to death a the most cruel irony.

Mr. Jones is an ok film on the Holodomor and how quite a few sympathetic western journalists tried to hide the famine.
Post-Stalin era with the day-to-day stuff, where under Stalin the bulk of atrocities occurred. What citizens? The people in the cities that got the grain the farmers grew?

Have a look at the Baltic states next, poor buggers got constantly screwed between the Germans and Russians.fair enough. The abuse started under Lenin and Starlin just continued it with an alcoholic insanity.
I think I need a break from it tbh. Started off with by educating myself as to why the Ukrainians and the soviets hate each other because of the build up of troops on the boarder, that lead me to Poland and then Romania and the list goes on.
Might have a spell and go back to comedy for a few days. Anti humans was rough.
