It's not really ironic though. The cricket team's popularity is why it doesn't have a nickname.

The nicknames are for marketing, to gain market share and grow affection for the team or so the thinking goes. Which is why the women's cricket team was called the 'Southern Stars' until everyone kind of agreed it was patronising bullshit and it just became the Australian Women's National Cricket Team.

The only ones that are any good are the Wallabies (maybe the OG?) and the Matildas.

Boomers? Hockeyroos? Jillaroos? Kangaroos? Kookaburras? Socceroos? It's like reading a picture book to your toddler.

Rugby I can understand because it’s not like we’re the only country that does it. Springboks, All Blacks, etc.

But I agree that the ‘socceroos’ is the worst thing I’ve heard in the world. Legitimately the only country I know of that markets their national team under a moniker first, country name second.
