Re: Tom Hawkins to Carlton

Yes. Still has a chance to be very good.
Chatting to some Swans supporters on their board, they think that while White may not be a dominant Cloke/Buddy type, that he would work pretty well with our small forwards.

Wouldn't want to pay a lot for him though.

Reid on the other hand....

Re: Tom Hawkins to Carlton

Even though I'm not up to date on his recent form, I would jump at the chance to get Schoenmakers. He could easily grow into a forward role like Walker and Waite. Even Jack Riewoldt played as a backman in a match against Carlton in 2009. Hawthorn wouldn't give up a third year tall for anything less than a best 22 player like Garlett.

I haven't seen a whole lot of him. I was under the impression he had played primarily as a defender in his junior years. Although given the way the drafting system works, recruiters like players to be capable at playing multiple positions, and often ask them to be moved around.

From what I have seen he is very important to Hawthorns future defence along with Stratton and they would not part with him unless for an exceptional offer. The players I mentioned are either a) highly rated KPF prospects who will cost coin but will be automatically ready for best 22 inclusion (Reid, Brown, Mckernan) b) less rated KPP prospects with individual aspects which I believe will lend themselves to becoming at the very least good role players (Cornelius, Carlisle).

All are acquirable although some (Reid, Brown) will require serious coin. Personally I would target Mckernan the hardest. Unlikely to be a superstar but leads well, marks strong and seems to have a reasonable eye for goal. Value is at a low second rounder, high first, or in other words a end of first compo pick.

In terms of convincing him to move we can offer:

a) Best 22 status next year (similiar to Laidler, Mckernan is behind Tippet and possibly Walker, if he stays, at the Crows. Also similiar is the change of coach and environment, which may encourage Mckernan to consider other options)
b) Increased pay packet (If you want to target a player, you have to be willing to pay. If we want Mckernan we may see us trade a senior player who is on the fringe for salary cap space)
c) A move back home to Victoria (not as big a factor as is often made out to be, but still a nice little pull factor in Carlton's favour)

And that's my recruiting hypothetical.

Re: Tom Hawkins to Carlton

Dangerfield would be a good get as I recon we are 1 high quality midfielder short. Adelaide have proven to be too dificult to deal with though. They would be just like port adelaide with nick stevens and let him go to the draft for nothing. He'd be a good player in our team. They would ask too much, i'm sure of it.

I think we have some ammo in trade week but not a great deal of potency in it. Perhaps Ellard, Mclean and Lucas for someone good. As much as I'd like to keep them for the right player they are expendable.

We'll no doubt have some sort of a crack at trade period this year

Wont happen as he is contracted .............

He would cost WAY too much. Just look at the Jacobs deal last year, where we got a 2nd rd pick for a player who has walked into their #1 ruck position.

Re: Tom Hawkins to Carlton

I have said all along Dangerfield is Essendon bound, Crows would want Gibbs for him, and rightfully so but Carlton won't do that.

We have enough A graders, we need to bolster up with periphal players, i like Phil Davies from the Crows, but they won't give him up.

Cheap gems like Jeremy Laidler are the way to go for us.

Brian Lake.. To Carlton 2012. Would you want?

Would we go hard at someone like Lake to fill the last piece of the
Premiership puzzle?

Much in the way Collingwood went for a mature player in Jolly
to fiil a weakness.

Will turn 30 next February, 177 games.

Is there 2 maybe 3 years of good footy?

Or too old??

What would we look to give up if we had a go to lure him to PP?

Our 1st rounder?(pick 17-22) or 2nd rounder and a player?..

We are near the p'ship window and would appear closer than the Bulldogs
to a flag.

A backline of: Duigan. Lake. Russell
Yarran. Jamison. Bower

Looks pretty pretty pretty good..

Discuss.

Re: Brian Lake.. To Carlton 2012. Would you want?

Just to clarify 'risk'. In what way?

Lake's body or mind? Or both?

Or risk what we have to pay in getting
him to Carlton?.. $700,000 per year + draft
Pick?

Re: Brian Lake.. To Carlton 2012. Would you want?

Don't think we'll be active really come trade week unless players like Hampson or Lucas want to leave ...

Ross Lyon has traded for a lot of recycled players at the Saints and it hasn't really worked

Sorry to jump in the conversation gentlemen, was having this same conversation with a Carlton mate of mine, posed the question " what would you prefer? A stay at home full back or a rangy centre half back type?

Could/should go after Alipate Carrlisle, would look significantly better in a good side, allowing Jamieson to play CHB, would leave you with a back six of

Duigan - Carlisle - Russell

Yarren - Jamieson - Scotland

Gives you an extra 5 years of service and his body would just about be in prime condition at 25 otherwise if the reports are true and young Trengove wants to come home, I'd move the world to get him. would be a 10 year player and another versatile option.

Just my two cents guys

Unless Dangerfield was out of contract and specifically nominated us, I'd rather not deal with the Crows again after last year's debacle. They can **** off.

In the end the deal we got was pretty fair.

I think the situation ended up in Adelaides favour.
We weren't going to get 14, but a 20 something may have been closer to the mark if that was possible.

May just not have mattered to us anyway, or we may have just grabbed Darling.

Makes sense and it wouldn't surprise me for us to go after a FB/CHB, considering the issues we've had getting our boys to fill that void.

The coaches have wanted to mould Henderson as our CHF and not a back.
Bower and Austin are injured more often than not and Watson and McCarthy may be a couple of years away yet.

If somehow we could fit Lake in the cap and the Dogs were willing to off load him at a cut price, then we should seriously look at it.

We're a top 4 contender with a hole in our back line and one of the best defenders of the last 5 years becomes available?

We'd be silly not to seriously consider it.

People will can this, though I think it is worth a shot. If he regains fitness, is one of the better defenders around, and an excellent user of the ball.

Has put the cue in the rack early to regain fitness. A fit lake would make us instant top 3 and genuine contender.

Would happily part with third rounder and a fringe player or even a second rounder on him. Yes it is a risk. Clearly. Worth looking at though.

On that alone we'd go after him.
It's the salary that may get in the way, unless the Dogs are happy for a 50/50 split. :o
