Re: John Butler

Still think we could get Steven Salopek cheaply and use him through the midfield and half forward rotations to much greater effect than at present time.
This.

Depending on how cheap though, Port would still probably want something of value for him.

He would cost us at least a 2nd round selection - which would rule us out of the running this year*, and I would be staggered if he was cheaper than that.

*assumes that we are being forced to take Buckley with our 2nd round selection.

Steven Salopek's career is in the toilet. What on earth would he bring to our club?

It's clear he's never going to get it together at Port. It'll be like the Boxing Day sales trying to get out of that rabble this off-season... but that doesn't mean everyone is worth it. Would Salopek just be another McLean? Too good for ressies, not AFL quality, injury-prone...? Young, but in an old body?

Now if a strapping KPP lad wanted to come over, we should be on that like white on rice. One suspects Butcher's asking price went from very very small to very very high in the past month, though! :p

Why throw a good pick at an injury prone 26/27yo who struggles to hold a place with poor team, doesn't like the hard stuff and hasn't shown anything like his best for at least three years? This is Carlton of old thinking...or even Carlton of 2009 thinking

Our second round pick (assuming it will be low-mid forties) has yielded the likes of Mitch Robinson, and Luke Mitchell in recent years. And yep, Mitchell hasn't shown a jot, but I think we are all happy to carry a potentially great power forward for a year or three before casting judgement.

Spot on. We need to recruit a mid like Jordan Lewis who has mongrel and can kick. Leave the likes of Salopek for Essendon and Richmond who pounced on Prismall and Grigg in trade week.

We may all be excited at the prospect of Butler? (Butcher) and some still see Fev in navy blue but I'm quietly looking forward to seeing Mitchell.

If he has got himself the Walker type shoulder fix, we may well have our forward fix in our own back yard.

Looking forward to watching Mitchell, McCarthy and Kerr in the off-season.
I'm expecting something good from these three boys along with Collins and Lucas.

Kerr doesn't seem the type to excite on the training track...I'll be keeping a close eye on Andy Mac for 2012 ;)

You're right in as far as that he hasn't previously excited on the track, but something seems to have clicked with him in recent weeks.
I just see more possibilities for Kerr that I do for McInnes in the short term and can reason for a break-out year for him.

Interestingly, McCarthy, McInnes and Kerr are basically the same age, with only a couple of months between them.

If Dylan Buckley doesn't win the Brownlow in 2012 I can imagine the lynch mob that it going to be formed by the members of this board. Give the kid a chance. For the sake of the children!

Get the feeling Andy Mac is closer to having an engine for the midfield than Kerry. Would love having McInnes running down the wings/HF. Would give us more value than Kerr who struggles to get the ball.

Then again, I rate Andy highly and Kerr not so much :p

I've no problem with that. Happy for all our guys doing well.

The off-season does though give you a pretty good insight as to who is likely to have a good season.
It was clear last year that Robbo had stepped up and that Duigan and Laidler were going to play all year.

The other one that stood out at times as Lucas, which is why it's so frustrating that we havn't been able to get him right this year.

Apparently talk on 6pr that Gaff wants to return to Melbourne, as can't settle in WA.

Lucas and Armfield back to WA for Gaff...???

The kid is a jet!!!

The Bullants missed Kerr on the weekend. I think he will make it.

That rumour has been going around for a while, it's not likely to happen.

Lets trade Fev for Gaff...

Michael Johnson anyone?? Seems out of favour over here in the west, and I believe he is a strong contender for one of those players that leave freo and become far better players. Can play both ends, and is a decent mark and kick. Thoughts??

Hopeless player prefer to stick with Bower.

We are going to have to offer someone who is reasonably rated. Hampson, O'hAilpin, Armfield, Joseph, Ellard, Mclean, Curnow and Davies will probably be shopped about. Handy players, not stars, reasonably established, not over old but wont be getting us to a premiership. Recon we have a good chance with one of our ruckmen or half back flankers. Probably need to use one of these players with a pick, probably 3rd but again for the right price 1st to get what we want and that means being aggressive. Also depends what we get Buckley with. We may be in a position to go for what we want in the draft although the type of players we need are the type that take longer to develop.

High priority must be getting a centerman who is not slow as trecal, not a one dimensional one trick pony and possession count is high 20s and often in 30s. Ellard, Curnow and Mclean are not going to take us to a premiership and are exposed every time we play top sides. An extra Swann, Judd, Murphy, Kerr, Boyd, Sewell or a Mitchell type is what we are missing although this is only exposed against top 4 sides, which is a massive reason to address this.

We need a ruckman who can take a mark up forward. At the moment we are playing two ruckmen who can not take a mark up forward and it's really hurting us. A ruckman who can take marks and kick goals is a massive missing link in our side.

Tall forward. If Waite gets fit and/or Mitchell turns out and/or we find a ruckman who can play forward this problem is pretty much solved. Thing is we need 2 to 3 tall marking forwards. So we pretty much need Waite to get fit, Mitchell to work out and a ruckman to be able to go forward and take marks.

I know it depends what comes up but we don't need any more backmen of any height. We don't need any more B grade midfielders or outside midfielder wingman/flanker types and we don't need any more small forwards or tall players who can not take a mark. Plenty of these types on our list.

Not quite sure why you are suggesting another ruckman, Kruezer will be a significantly better player in 2012, we have much greater needs than another ruckman on our list, particuarly with the rule this year with alot of teams basically have one ruck with a flexible player as the 2nd ruck.

Because we have not got a ruckman on our list who can take a mark in the forward line on our list and this is part of what is missing from our side. It is that flexable 2nd ruck player that you just mentioned that we do not have. We have recruited a lot of tall "athletes" who can't take a grab.

I wouldn't get too excited.

It's a Kim Hagdorn article.

John Butcher in demand

BUDDING Port Adelaide goal-kicking sensation John Butcher could be in hot demand with bids from Melbourne-based AFL clubs to lure him back to his home state Victoria.

He will become a prime target for Victorian-based clubs on the market for key forwards, with Carlton and North Melbourne possible homes for the late season scoring and big-marking sensation.
While it is understood the big forward is bracing for a potential bidding war from across the Victorian border, Butcher looks more likely to extend his stay at Port after he was recruited from Gippsland Power two years ago.

I lol :D:D

Sounds like we are right into Butcher.

He would be great, what would it take.... Russell and someone else or draft picks, reckon they might need a ruckman also!!!

Hopefully we can pull it off!

Russell and our first pick. I think that would be a deal. I know some will say 2 first round picks is too much. I personally feel we can cover Russell with Tuohy upgraded and Laidler. I would personally trade Hampson for a first round pick and trade that pick along with our first getting Butcher and possibly a later pick from them. We really only lose our first pick but that would be pick 20+ in a weaker draft. Carlton period is now, so missing a 1st round pick one year won't hurt, recruiting what we need. 2012-2016 drafts we can draft to replace ageing midfielders. Carlton midfield rotation will improve when Jeff Gartlett, Kane Lucas, Bryce Gibbs and maybe Chris Yarran get more run in it.

That all in good about Mitchell, but like Midfielders you can't rely on the only one. What IF both could come good, we would be set up for a decade. The chances of all 5 players you mention doing a lot next year are slim, but it's good to have hope.
