It is backline week after all..

B: Hayden McPharlin Grover
HB: Broughton Tarrant Duffield

Possibly Freo's strongest zone assuming McPharlin plays back. Bring on the critics!

Very experienced, 4 of those guys are 28+.

Be interesting to see how Tarrant backs up last years good form, was very solid.

Mcpharlin out of the forward line is a good move, bloke is momentum killer with some of his goal kicking.

Not a fan of Grover, but i really do like the look of Broughton and especially Duffield. YOu have a couple of excellent, young, rebounding defenders there. Its the KPP backline spots that are your achillies heel, and i don't know if you can afford to play both Tarrant and/or McPharlin exclusively in defence.

Can you expand on your reasoning?

I don't think Freo supporters will be able to come to an agreement who are starting back 6 will be.

Most have Tarrant and McPharlin as the primary tall defenders. Most have a combination of Hayden, Duffield and Broughton.

The 6th spot is where all the debate will come.

Grover/Suban/Mundy/Ibbotson/Johnson/Silvagni

There is a case for all of them. Probably a few names i've missed too.

The problem with the backline is that when the midfield is ready, Tarrant, McPharlin will be too old. Desperately needs a young KPD in there if they are going to seriously challenge soon.

Probably the best rebounding defenders in the league though, or up there at least.

It's a good starting back 6th with a nice blend of rebound/defense.

The problem we face is a drop off in depth. Hayden goes down and we lose some drive, Tarrant falls and we move an untried youngster in there or push grover into a KP.

Still need a few more solid KP options down there.

How about giving us Jackson and I will talk to the Dons about Tate.

You are right about the problem we face.

We did draft Dylan Roberton and Alex Silvagni this year as KPD's as well as Hamish Shepheard as a possibility the year before so we're not totally without options for KPD's.

Unlikely to be the class of McPharlin and Tarrant though I must agree.

Solid, but with 4 players nearing 30 they will need an overhaul in the near future.

McPharlin is solid, Tarrant has been excellent, Duffield is an underrated quality defender and Broughton looks very promising.

Hayden and Grover are on shaky ground and I believe Suban is destined for the midfield.

Freo needs another 190 cm + sized defender and some more rebounding assistance for Duffield and Broughton.

6.5/10

ATM they probably have one of the better defences but as others have said it is an ageing backline and some introduction of youth this year would only be of benefit for future years.

IMO Haydn is one of the most underrated defenders - one of those players that you don't appreciate how good he is until he is not there.

He's 29 and had badly interrupted seasons since his excellent 2007 effort. He goes backwards in 2010 and he could find himself replaced by a youngster.

We're all hoping Hayden can get through 2010 without any interruptions because he's a very important part of our team.

As far as replacements for our ageing defenders go we've recently drafted Dylan Roberton and Alex Silvagni as potential KPD's as well as Hamish Shepheard the year before. Clancee Pearce is a possibility to take over from Hayden, Broughton could probably fill that void for a while as well but I prefer him up the ground.

And that youngster is probably Broughton. Hayden clone almost. :thumbsu:

"almost" being that Rog has the X factor that we need more of - Sonny and Pearce have it, but they're still developing.

Broughton is getting more training time in the midfield and reminds me of a future Gary O'Donnell; tough, cool under pressure, great stamina and a good leader.

Whose disposal don't you rate coming out of defence?

Probably bias but I'd rate Duffield, Broughton and Hayden as very good disposers by foot. McPharlin is up and under but he's on the last line, as well as Grover. Tarrants field kicking is much better than his set shots.

Quite fragile, Hayden, Tarrant, Grover and Mcpharlin have all have injury concerns and are getting on in age. Duffield showed a lot of promise and could be a really handy pickup, Broughton was impressive in his first year but will most likely be just a solid average player. Suban will be an absolute gun but will most likely run through the mid-field when he matures.
In summary, they are too old without any real flair/pace but if they all stay injury free and play up to potential it is a very solid experienced backline
