Personally our list is already in the top 8 but we are at least 6 years from the premiership.

This is from the perspective as as a base to build a premiership

I hope our players aren't afraid to embarrass themselves, put it on the line and go all out when the time comes to win the premiership.

I am sure our Tiger culture will let them embarrass themselves and toughen up to try anything to win the premiership!!

Unfortunately, I cannot prove it but I wish I could for those who believe it!

It is an interesting reaction though from some to this thread!

We may have the most ill prepared list due to their youth but they are not the worst list in the AFL in terms of talent and future prospects!!

this from january is as good a place to start as any will save a bit of work.

cotchin- potential A grader or elite to very good player. is still very much in development, and has a long way to go to earn the right to be considered elite. not even an established player.

deledio - yep a B grader or very good to this point. and should get better.
obviously hes established.

cousins - yep still very good/elite a clear A grader.the trouble is hes 32 we should be already looking for his replacement.

foley - while being a solid footballer i rate him a B/C grader or real solid core list player to very good player. is clearly an established afl player

martin - yep im throwing him in. like cotchin a POTENTIAL A grader or very good to elite. i expect him to play 15 plus games but i dont expect him to have huge impact yet. i think it mad for anyone to expect that. atm very much a D grader or development and obviously not established.

riewoldt - does have limitations in his game. i rate him a D to C grader. that is hes still developing and will become like foley a real solid core list player or better imo.
he has not established himself as an afl player yet but he is getting there.

morton - hmm not sure about this bloke definately not A grade anyway.
imo needs to add other facets to his game to truly become a good solid afl player. im going to be kind anyway and rate him a C grader with reservations.
if hes established its only just.

tambling - has given us basically half a season last yr. showed he can play at the required level. imo a C grader with reservations. like morton hes only just established himself. he may go on to become a very good player and he may not.

rance - i liked him as a junior, but people are right to have alarm bells ringing with this kid.
atm he lacks awareness decision making and his footskills are not up to scratch. to top it of has shown little in one on one situations.

imo this kid does not have the skills to play as a tall running defender. he must be developed as an accountable kpp but does not show the required attributes to do this. yep im concerned. atm i rate him a D grader or development player borderline at that.

moore - has had one good season in 6.has constanly struggled with injury and asking him to play kp imo does not help.
at 189cm and 85kg he really should not be playing kp at all.
while i think moore has most of the tools to play afl, he is yet to display the attributes needed to play as a third tall or running back. he just does not get involved in the game enough. your backs need hurt factor well your running backs do. C grader or core list player and barely established with just one good season behind him.

thursfield - 191cm 86kg kpd. needs bulk and needs to hold down a kp. theres just no other option with him. he either makes it as a kpd or hes gone. gives absolutely nothing else other than defensive attributes no hurt factor if hes to be a third tall he needs to dramatically improve a big area of his game after 5 yrs i cant see it. lets hope he gets some size about him this off season and he can hold down fb. C grader at best and imo has still to truly establish himself.

mcguane - quite simply put a trier who is not up to standard imo below standard player i rate him a F.

vickery/post/griffiths/astbury. - simply put all are in early development and really should not be asked to play kp at all.
all are a long way of and are clearly D graders or development players atm. obviously none are established.
would go so far as to say while post who will play back and vickery ruckman show lots of promise there is no guarantee any of these boys will ultimately make it.

real proven quality is a problem good solid players is a problem established players especially talls is a problem. imo we have a long way to go. without doubt a bottom 4 side this yr with the spoon a real possibility.

lets just bite the bullet and play as many kids as possible and hope they can be competetive. we all know we are more than one yr away from being a decent side closer to 3 or 4 yrs from it.
we have built a foundation of sorts we need to keep building.
we need to stop all the expectation on 1st and 2nd yr players and we need to stop overrating our players guns a graders and yet lots of these guns have not even
established themselves or proven a thing.

yep a good place to start to rate where we are at mid yr.
will go into all players i think.

If Deledio played for Geelong or Collingwood everyone would rate him an A-grader. He can't do much more than he is at the moment - harsh rating.

Not a bad effort Santa , not that I am an expert.

I literally think Martin could be scarily good. I will keep the lid on him.

Lids is an A grade and just needs to settle in a position. Wing / Halfback in space for the moment.

Riewoldt is an a grader. what impressed me on the weekend was his kicking for goal. Good improvement -signs of a champion but not there yet He was playing on questionable defenders but you can only beat who you play.

Edwards stepped up and I think this guy can be more than handy with experience and more confidence.

Foley is a B grader for me ATM. However, he could be an A-grader composure and awareness/peripheral vision needs to be improved. I think with bigger bodied Martin and Cotch breaking lines and attracting opponents Foley may be a lot more effective

Morton- I would like to see him add strings to his bow. Improve his other side and defensive game. I think he is a forward and a potential effective match up problem with his size for opposition if he improves

Cuz, don't know. I would keep Tucky before Cuz . Maybe keep him around the club next year for leadership off the field. Balls in Cuz court though.


Moore done enough for me. Could be a solid player and not doing to uch wrong. He is growing/

Thursfield better prospect than McGuane IMO so persist with him.

Rance = still developing. Shown enough for me to keep but needs to find a role in negating role possibly against opposition utility. I think this guy can improve with experience and confidence.

Vickery/Astbury/Post/Griff - all in development and showed enough. Recently, Griff amd Astbury in particular look very promising

Could go on about others but won't . Obviously some have to be cut and some should be cut.

I am not excited about White, King and Nahas and Relton , from readings , does not seem to be applying himself to get through.

Webberly, shown enough to encourage, Connors and Collins could improve further.

I like Dea as a prospect . I am not overly confident abot Taylor as some but have not had a real look at him.Give hime time.

I am not sure about Nanos but his persistence has won some patience.

Not sure about Farmer and had doubts but in last game showed a few signs so maybe I am wrong with him.

Like Dea as a prospect. The others haven't seen enough of but Hicks could be good!

Graham has been handy to ward off any ruck recruiting ATM IMO
This is just my perception. but I think our team has some very exciting prospects.

One of our guys could be better than G Ablett in my opinion but I am not sure G Ablett is the best player in the comp at the moment but no one would argue he is not up there.

So although we have a wallowing list and premierships are years away with a few more good draft picks we can be right up there challenging!! We do lack some class in some areas IMO which usually means you need high draft picks to attain.

I think we have some great prospects though with more realistic potential than many clubs!!!

I forgot Tambling, Tambling is complicated. He is talented enough to persist with particularly if there are reasons but not forever in terms of team morale.

I would put Tambling at FF and Riewoldt at Forward pocket and let him do his thing.

I would tell Tambling to lead and mark. Above all make the shots at goal count. Tambling needs to fuse his focus when kicking his disposal.

Look what worries me about Tambling is his evasiveness. He needs to run around the agility test a bit. Get a few spins going like Edwards. Tambling may be able to get a step. He seems to orthodox in his running at times, ie running on railway tracks. Take a leap out of Rioli's book and duck and weave a bit.

I do like Tamblings mark which is the main reason I would persist and he has silky skills apparenty. Maybe his balance is to far back in his posture. I would like him on the balls of his feet more!!

it was from january and he was rated very good. where is he at at the half way mark, well still very good still has a bit to prove before i pop him in the elite category but hes getting there. i want to see him take games by the scruff of the neck and turn them. if at a strong club this may already be happening but it is not yet at richmond.

For example, on the polls board I see Nick Riewoldt vs Jack Riewoldt, Should Jack have gone number #1 in front of Gibbs and Selwood, etc. Just embarrassing for the rest of us and now this thread. We have the worst list in the AFL, still another 10 or so list cloggers to cut at least.

Spot on. We are 2 and 10. That's the only way to assess the list. The only top rating i will give is to Hardwick for being consistent in his approach week in, week out. This thread is three years away from anything.

I think most people severely overrate youth - just because someone is young doesn't mean they are going to automatically improve.

All young kids are 'Going to be Champions!'. We just don't know. I could drag up the Cleve Hughes threads from 2 or 3 years ago - they were wrong. Last year Post was 'The new Richo' - well, he's not there yet. I've seen threads saying Riewoldt will have to move to accommodate Griffiths, whose total career to now consists of 2 marks and 8 disposals.

Look, pumping up the kids is fun - (I reckon Edwards is going to be a star - why? I don't know, but I like the boy). But we've all seen far too many kids fail to make the grade to do any predictions.

Let them prove they can play AFL football before we rate them.

I remember JR taking an outstretched mark against Port and M Williams hands behind head looking and thinking what do we have here.

It was a bit like Astbury kicking the goal from the boundary.

I am going to stick my neck out and say and say JR and Lids will be stars. Martin and Cotch barring injury will be stars. Tambling, Edwards, Astbury, and Griffiths have the potential to be stars. Post could be a star if the planets align and Post applies himself development wise.

Taylor could be a very good player and Connors could be very good with Moore, Thursfield and Collins very handy. Vickery will at least be a good player for us and Grimes could be regarded similarly but it is difficult for me to comment on him and Westhoff as I have not seen them nor Gouridis

Dea has the potential to be at least very good however some of the rest could struggle.

tuck and Foley are very handy players but Tuck in particular has limited upside but he is tough and durable.

Graham could be handy, Newman is good and Morton could improve

Webberley could be handy as could Rance with Rance having more potential

Ten or so list cloggers??? Are you serious?? Name them. I hate the mentality of everyone has to be a gun if not delist until we find a gun. There are players that will never be stars but who will play pivotal roles in their teams.

Reading your board, I'm figuratively struggling to see through my palm. I've been through this before, you're now a top 8 list. Watch half the team be chopped this year and take the medicine you accepted. Instead of doing a usual quick fix getting ahead of yourself Richmond thingy, accept the REBUILD and get over yourselves

I've thought the same thing in the weeks since. I think he's earned another year on the basis that he would only be replaced by a speculative late draft pick anyway.

Simmonds had retired when you made the comment, cousins i think should be allowed to stay another year for his on field leadership, hislop thpompson mcmahon i all agree with. Not sure of the contract arangements for white king and polo but would be happy with one more year for them all, white and king have showed something new this year whilst polo is having some good form for coburg. Id perhaps agree with polo if we bring him in for the last half and see where he is at.

To hard to put them in A, B, C, D etc, I would rather 1-10 with 10 the best, and as Lids is our best with improvement to come, i would give him 9/10, and at this stage our worst is McMahon, who i would give a 2.5/10

i agree with half the names here.
polo, hislop, thomson all struggling. mcmahon definitely has no future at punt road.
cousins i think has another year of him. it might not be first-class footy, but what a brownlow medallist can provide to the young guys both at training and on-field has to be gold.
as for the others...

polak needs to be given just a bit more time before he can be determined a list-clogger and not worth it anymore. i'd still love to see him having another crack at a CHB post, as he has genuine height, strength and can take a great mark. decision-making and especially disposal does lack.

white has been pretty valuable this year. sure, its hard to say whether or not he really has a future, but its definitely not out of the question just yet. we'll wait and see.

king is much maligned, but has put in around 4-5 really good shutdown/tagging roles so far this year, usually as a BP or HBF. if he can continue to have the impact he's having and keep great players to only a handful of disposals, keep him in the side. footskills are horrible but not at all a write-off just yet.

nahas is a difficult one. i've not seen much at all from him this year that i've loved, and he goes missing very often. has some upside, but needs to work on his defensive game, finding more of the footy, and accuracy on goal. not sure if there are any fitness concerns....but the man is young, and i won't be surprised if he comes good and spends a good few years in the FP

all in all this threads a bit of a waste of time, unless we're discussing individual players i feel.
rating lists becomes a bit stupid when we incorporate game-plan, how well the teams are actually doing, how old they are, and where they're going to be at in 10-15 years

If you are rating it as it stands right now, then taking into account the players have finally started to understand and apply the Dimma "rules" in the last five weeks, it's clearly a lower mid table list (probably 8 to 12).

If you are asking how they will go next year with more experience and bigger bodies, I would guess that they will rate around 6 to 10 - with a bullet.

After that its too far into the future to take into account all the variables.

By way of comparison, I would rate all of the up and comers ahead of us at the moment (except North).

But given the promise of over all list balance and the possibility of rapid development in such a young list, I'm thinking that only Melbourne might be ahead of us next season in the emerging contender stakes.
