Based on their performances to the half way point of this season - and thinking a bit about 2008 also... what ratings would you give the players on the list in 2009:

Absolute Star
Bloody good
Crap at times, but necessary cog in the machine
Dumb-Arse First Class
Fkn Failure (as an AFL footy player)

3 - Schammer - C+ (if he could sort out his kicking he'd be a B+)
4 - Hase - B+ (maybe an A-)
5 - Ibbo - B- (could develop into B+/A-)
6 - Solly - B
7 - Peake - C
8 - Suban - C+ (could develop into B+/A- type)
9 - Drum - D (right now - thought he's be a B at least when we drafted him)
10 - Palmer - B (could develop into A)
11 - Headland - B+ (when on-song)
12 - Brock - hard to tell... probably a C
13 - Pratt - unrated, but think he would be a solid C+/B- type
14 - Grover - C+
15 - Crowley - C+
16 - Mundy - B- (should be a B+ but just hasn't gone there yet...)
17 - Ballantyne - unrated
18 - McPharlin - C (when in form he's an A-)
19 - Hinkley - C
20 - Tarrant - A- (as a backman, B- as a forward)
21 - Foster - C+
22 - Thornton - C- (this year... IMO he has elevated himself just above the D-A mob)
23 - Mayne - B-
24 - Campbell - C-
25 - Dodd - C-/D+
26 - Kepler - C-
27 - Gilmore - D
28 - Murphy - F
29 - Pav - A
30 - Clarke - unrated
31 - Sandi - A
32 - Hill - B (already - but will become an A, no doubt)
33 - Bucovaz - unrated
34 - Hall - unrated
35 - Ruffles - unrated
36 - Browne - D/F... harsh, but true for 2009
37 - Johnson - B
38 - Walters - unrated (looking at a B at least in the future)
39 - Sibosado - unrated
40 - deBoer - C+ (will get better with experience)
41 - Duffield - B
42 - Head - F
43 - Roger - A-
44 - Connelly - unrated
45 - Pearce - unrated (will be at least a C+ maybe even a B)
46 - Shepheard - unrated
47 - vanBerlo - unrated
48 - Broughton - C+ (might graduate to a B with more games under his belt... but that's what people thought about his Subi team-mate in Priddis also).

A+
No-one... last year I would have said Pav, but he's not quite there this year IMO.

A
Pav
Sandi

A-
Hayden
Tarrant
(Maybe Hase a bit stiff)

B+
Hase
Headland (hard to judge his past two seasons... so I am going further back with him)

B

Palmer
Hill
Johnson
Duffield

B-
Ibbotson
Mundy
Mayne

C+
Schammer
Suban
Grover
Crowley
Foster
deBoer
Broughton

C
Peake
O'Brien

C-
Hinkley
Thornton
Campbell
Bradley
Dodd (benefit of the doubt)

D
Drum
Gilmore
Browne

F

Head

Unrated as yet
Pratt
Ballantyne
Clarke
Bucovaz
Hall
Ruffles
Walters
Sibosado
Connelly
Pearce
Shepheard
van Berlo

So, are my assessments fair / harsh / too stupid to be discussing???

To be honest I don't think Pav deserves an A. B+ for mine.

Hayden a little too high as well (based on 2009).

Headland will never be B+ again, if he was ever. There, I've said it. Headland this year reminds me of Blackie last year, i.e. on the way out. Could be wrong.

In general I think these rankings are a bit confusing, because it's hard to say whether we are talking about 2009 or not. I would limit it to 2009, where Headland for instance would really be unrated due to injury (Mayne too). :thumbsu:

That's a pretty fair call IP.

I'd probably have Jonno and Solly as a B-, and maybe Crowley. He would be a B- over his career I think but wasn't as good this year before his injury as he has been. Schammer is definitely a C+. He butchers the ball too much to get into the Bs. Drum has to be looking down the barrel of an F but probably needs a few games in the big league to see where he really sits. Dodd unfortunately has become a D+.

Is there any chance on getting a look at the running tally of the POTY votes are at the half way mark of the year?

Where's the old "CC" I used to get so many of? The old "cause for concern", or class clown I was told.

"Intelligent student, but needs to apply himself and stop pointing out teacher's errors" etc. etc.

Spot the teacher eh Impy??

Thought you lot used OBE grading over in WA - shouldn't Head be "will grow from trying harder and more fully engaging with more of the contested football."??

Anyhoo, I think you're too harsh on Taz - he's been at least as good as Pav IMHO, which makes him an A.

Can't understand how Suban rates below Des, and you're being very generous to the Purple Muppett in rating Groves equal with Suban I reckon. Groves is the ultimate team man and tries so hard, but this year Suban has been a lot better I think.

Pav would only just be a B+ I'd suggest, and Mayne's unrated surely, as he hasn't played this year.

Roger's been average (a B perhaps), and surely Duffman is an A- at least. I'd have Broughton higher as well. Other than that, a great rating list I reckon.

What has Foster ever done to be put in the same class as Schammer, Grover and Crowley?? Seriously over rated based on what he has achieved so far. And to say he's better than Peake, who has had some excellent runs of games in his career (not that Peake's a star or anything), but Foster really has done nada to this point, last night included. He might turn out ok, but IMO its more likely he won't make it.

Thats why i thought that it was a bit harsh on Schammer when he is classified in the same bracket as Foster, and Mayne is rated higher than him .

And Crowls was considered the best tagger in the league last season.

Yeah fair enough - I guess it was a case of 2009, but with some of them who haven't played much then reach back and see how their 2008 (and in Des' case 2007) looked. For some it's difficult to split past from present... we all know that Pav at his best is A+ and Elvis at his best is at least an A-... but neither have reached their best this year, nor been consistent.

Just a little exercise in "avoid folding the washing on a Sunday afternoon" with not a lot of thought going into it really... :o And just cos we're halfway through 2009, thought it might be something discuss...

Fair enough. Foster is just a personal fave and I guess the rating was based more on what I hoped rather than what is perhaps presented as the cold hard facts....

I think we all do that a bit with the newbies, see the potential rather than the faults/weaknesses

Up to an including last week's game v Richmond:

7. Pavlich (19)
8. Johnson (17)
9. Palmer (11)
10. Mundy (10)

BYB

2. Hill (19)
3. de Boer (9)
4. Hinkley (3)
5. Pratt (1)

Thanks IP, that's great :) Pretty much around what I would have expected although I thought Taz or Sandi would be the leader.

Is it straight past the post ie the sum of all the votes or do you average them for each round?

Interesting that Hill has votes in the POTY but Suban has him pegged in the BYB - probably an artifact of the consistency and number of BYBs.

The 2008 draft will be a crucial one for us moving forward. I think I counted 8 selections in the national draft and 5 in the rookie draft. That'd be a record number of new recruits for us, surely?

The most pleasing aspect is that our top two picks, Hill and Suban, have played every game already and looked like they have long careers ahead of them. With Palmer and Mayne to come back to the fray in 2010 (I'm being pessimistic with Mayne's injury), it could be exciting times sooner rather than later. :thumbsu:

Our 2 nd pick in the 08 draft hasn't actually played yet, that would be the hobbit

so that makes it 9 to 10 we need to trade/delist this year.

Hinkley - trade or keep
Thornton - trade/delist
Campbell - trade or keep
Bradley - trade or delist
Dodd - delist
Drum - trade/delist
Gilmore - delist
Browne - delist
Murphy - trade/delist
Head - delist 1st

We will probably keep dodd. otherwise spot on

Geez some of you are pretty harsh on Dodd, delist him !!!!!. He is a bit like Grover, a cog in the team, but not a star.

Very happy with Duff this season.

I reckon Sandi is our only A grade player this season, Pav is cruising and needs a boot in the rear. We all know what Pav can do, well he has to produce it.

Look at Geelong, Hawthorn and St Kilda.

These are the teams we want to emulate.

Now tell me, would Dodd get a game with them.

No.

Exactly. Dodd wouldn't even get a spot on their list.

We have to be brutal and remove a large number of players again. That list a few posts up seems about right, but I wouldn't waste time trying to trade duds. If we don't want them, then nobody else would either.

No harm in trying

i reckon your being unduly harsh on pav, and rediculously soft on dodd.
i reckon other than gilmore, browne and head... dodd would be fighting for the most useless player on our list

pav is playing different position to what he normally would, i dont see him putting him no effort, i just think that he is being played out of his best position, he needs to play full forward, Centre half forward.... not in the middle

i agree on duffield, he has won me over

Although not at his best this year, and quite possibly due to the reasons KPR has put up, something I have liked about Pav in the last 6 weeks is his using his body a lot more in the clinches. He seems to be working hard in and around the stoppages and using his fairly formidable physique to get to the ball or get other players off the ball. Could probably improve his chasing and defensive stuff a bit but is certainly showing more aggro. I like it :thumbsu:

Dodd's not useless in the same way those others are - he's a very handy close-checking defender.

It's only when he gets the ball in his hands he becomes useless.

Head will be gone
Murphy will be gone
Browne will be gone
Campbell will get his 4-5 games to prove himself if he does ok he will stay
Gilmore will be given same opportunity
Bradley will be staying
Dodd will be staying
Hinkley will be staying
Drum i think will get 4-5 games to prove himself also but could be alreaady considered gone.
Thornton i think should go but think he is safe.
Grover may be told to move along(dont agree with it just a feeling)
Headland if he cant be put on veterans list could be a suprise gone.
Obrien gone.

There will be a minimum of 5 gone could be 8-9
