Paine is more likely than not to play out the rest of the year in the VFL as we have plenty of tall KPs with the imminent return of Reid and tarrant. Of players not yet tried, Elliott is the only player likely to come into the team.

Very happy I made the trip down to Melbourne for this one. What a game, I was on the edge of my seat for the entire last quarter. Season might be getting back on track now.

Can anyone enlighten me, as I watched it at the ground and not on the tv, but I couldn't really fault Buckley's game besides 2 poor kicks inside 50. I thought he did ok but wasn't keeping a close eye on him. How did he go defensively?

Thought he was ok last week too.

Is he good enough depth to warrant another year on the list?

Buckley's future pretty much depends on this seasons efforts combined with what's on offer come draft time.
He was very good in the first quarter v Port to his credit.

Those intense final 2 minutes, one more time;

Could have gone either way, we got a bit lucky when Watson decided to play on, and then his kick was terrible to Jetta.

But I did say that. It was actually the point of my post. We DID play really well. If we had played like crap and won, while Essendon played really well, then I would have been happier knowing how much more upside we had.

Yes, we have players to come back, but so do the bombers. Hurley, McVeigh, Winderlich, Dempsey to name a few.

I'm just saying, given our infield domination and how good our back line was, I would have liked a bigger margin.

But a win is a win I guess. As I said in another thread, lenny20 made a good point about our forward line not capitalising on the midfield dominance. Which is probably right.
We weren't clean enough, but our defensive intensity & pressure was absolutely top-notch - best I've seen from the bombers in a loooong while. Reckon a week or two earlier, we would've beaten you, with that effort.
Constantly knocked down, harrassed or interrupted clean collingwood possession, which broke things up & held you within range.

No such thing as a bad win, not in such a tight & intense game anyway.
Pies will have learnt a few things, and have taken a few things away to work on - as will we.

[strike]best[/strike] worst of luck for the year Pies!

Dawes game was very encouraging. His first half was excellent courtesy of a faultless marking performance. Thats all he lacks. He has shown he can do it. Just not consistently. If can sort his shit out and take those marks on a consistent basis we are a much better side for it.

We were watching a different game. I went back and watched the first half again just to make sure I wasn't that drunk yesterday.

'faultless marking performance' in the first half implied to me that he'd taken some nice contested marks, or ran into space constantly and had taken a fair few marks - got free on the lead, that sort of thing.

He took one mark in the first quarter. It was an uncontested mark on the HFF near the boundary. He then kicked it directly to Hibberd who took an uncontested mark of his own.

In the second quarter he took two marks with 5 minutes to go. The first he got a lovely ball over the back from Fasolo which would literally be impossible to mess up because it was weighted so nicely. He took this mark uncontested as well. He then missed from 20m out on a slight angle. Out on the full.

He then took a mark on the lead, again uncontested.

Soon there after he dropped a chest mark in a contest.

3 marks from 4 attempts is about as far from a 'faultless marking performance' as you can get when you look at each of them.

He had a couple of hitouts, a tackle or two, and precious little else.

He was caught with the ball twice due to lack of awareness or trying to unrealistically break tackles.

I like Dawes a heap but that's not the half you point people towards if you want to show them a good or promising half by him, much less a 'faultless marking performance'

That missed Goal Think stuffed him up because after that he played with no Confidence

Thats how I remember it but I don't have the benefit of a replay. I sometimes wonder what happens to your perception of a players game when you set the bar really low? I thought Dawes and Sinclair showed some positive things. I seem to be in the minority. I've been very critical of both in the recent past.

On this i'd love to put video together of contentious individual performances, like Dawes. Not just the highlights but everything. I think it would really add to some of the discussion that occurs and settle some myths.

Dawes missed some marks and missed a very easy goal that could of sealed the game early...

His below standard and in the past 12 months his development has gone backwards, his marking and goal kicking have both been below acceptable

Dawes showed signs on Wednesday that he might be getting more physical I think, I recall one play when he put out the big don't argue and crashed through.

He does lots of little things that aren't always noticed.

Also, I think he's going far better as the second ruck than what Leroy ever did.

If he goes out of the side, likely Wood comes in and Wood's lack of presence around the ground gives us a soft, uncompetitive edge IMO.

There were a few very good signs from Dawes I thought and think we need to be patient, it's not like we have a better option anyway.

He'll re-emerge very soon I think and be a very important cog in the side, just needs a really good game, kick a few goals get his confidence back.

Re Dawes, who i am a big supporter of, i'm with Swoop. I think he showed signs on Wednesday and did contribute in a number of areas of the game.
The missed goal was critical, as a key forward, for the most part, he must hit the scoreboard.
There was also his role in Swans first goal in Qtr 1, he caused the spill. He appears to me to be putting everything into his efforts and, at present, structurally he is part of the best 22. Of the returning backs, the best equipped to play another role is Reid, but also he is an AA CHB!!
His ability to mark the ball, his agility versus his size would be exceedingly dangerous for a back line already contending with a Cloke, Dawes and at times Jolly.

Re Sinclair, he did play his best game for year, the kid needs to convert a few chances and his confidence and belief that he belongs there will soar. With our draw i would play continue with him for the next few weeks as the better credentialled players return.

Finally , Elliott is an absolute certainty to be fitted in after another run or two at the lower level, provided he avoids further injury. He offers the ability to lead and mark which is a terrific complement to pace and ground skills. Converts well too!!
