The interaction with Geelong players after the NAB game start of 2015 was telling.

I tried to deny it until his "it's just a hobby for fans" comment. Had zero to do with Walsh's passing
Do you think that was the most telling sign?

The fact Danger wasn't made captain over Tex tells you all, got to love Tex but if you are trying to retain potentially the best player in the comp and someone with his determination he would be a clear choice for captain over tex. there is no doubt he was offered it but turned it down for a reason

No it's not, but in your first post, it seems you're convinced it's a matter of fact.

I think it's unlikely more money would have got Dangerfield stay, unless we offered ultra mega dollars.
We obviously had enough to get Gibbs interested, but maybe not enough to attract someone bigger.
Let's say we had a spare 1.5m in the cap the last two trade periods, who of the available players would you target?
We couldn't have had a spare 1.5 though as that was 15% of the cap we might have had a spare $500k but we don't know

It would require an analysis of every single player that resigned, and the knowledge as to whether they could have been lured by more money. As I said, expecting me to be able to provide you with that information is ludicrous, however I think not as much as the argument that there would be no such players across the league.

It boils down to this claim, doesnt it: 'when we had no cap space as the result of our management it was totally worthless and couldnt have helped us, but now that I believe we have cap space it's a brilliant and game changing thing'.
If someone came along that was an out right gun mid we could have made room and rearended contract till the CBA increase came about.
As I said, we havent missed out on anyone.

Or maybe Walsh could see what was kind of obvious. He always thought of himself first and the team second.

Y'know, I was thinking the same thing watching that. I thought the 95-105% cap rule was near-universally known, how do these so-called experts not know it??
It's not that simple though. Some teams will be at 95% of their cap with several massively front-loaded contracts, effectively giving them more than 10% or more room to play with.

If such a team didn't land a player this year they could then renegotiate existing contracts to further front-load and go even harder the following year.

If Adelaide and West Coast don't have the CBA increase build into their contracts then it means they potentially have all of that increase to play with.

Wasnt Walsh's explanation something to the effect of:

When he first met with the leaders they all asked what he had in mind for them, their roles. Tex asked him how he was going to make the club and the team better.

JJ pretty much confirmed on 5AA that his contract doesn't have a trigger in his contract to increase with the CBA increase.
However, I'm sure when his negotiated his contract he would have made an estimate on what the expected CBA increase would be, so his salary from 2018 onwards would have had it factored in to some extent. It just means it is a fixed amount, rather than a % increase linked to the CBA.

You can make as many excuses as you like,Danger will be Geelongs next captain for a reason he is smart determined and wills his team to win and has bundles of ability

He clearly wasn't given the captaincy because he was leaving and the club knew it

It stands out like dogs balls, you may aswell call it like it is

We easily matched Geelong's bid we would have coughed up a mill if he wanted to stay, he's only on 850k at Geelong.... plus brown paper bags.

Thought it was funny how on Footy Classifieds Monday night they said no one would ever match a restricted free agent.... it's like they forget that we did it already.
Technically they are correct. Dangerfield never made a free agent bid. However, that was only because he knew the Geelong bid would be low enough that Adelaide would match, so there was no point.

We missed out on Gibbs because we wouldn't give Carlton 2 first round picks, not because of our salary cap.
I was kidding

We miss out on players as salaries offered by most clubs aren't dramatically different we all have the same salary cap now cola is finished

The reason we miss out is the want for players to come to Adelaide it's generally not the $$$ Gibbs was one that wanted to come

Yep, we never matched. We didn't need to. We just had to be able to match.

Sam McClure suggested on SEN this morning that there is more to the lever situation then just waiting for the CBA. If we just have had added in the contract escalators he would be signed by now

I'm worried about the Lever situation and won't relex until he signs but I don't think McClure would have any sources at all

Doesn't stand out like dogs balls to me at all.

He clearly wasn't given the captaincy because he was never willing to put the team before himself.

See, we can do this all day. All we have to go on is the word of Phil Walsh, but why would we believe that?

True, we can say what we like but what we do know is not many in AFL circles would have chosen Tex and thats not a crack hes been a fair captain and the majority would have chosen Danger

It seems very clear that danger wast he most wanted player on our list and you dont think the cpataincy was dangled in an effort to retain him but it would have been declined, at which time the AFC would have known he was gone

And if they didnt offer him the captaincy and he left then they are dimwits because if we had him in the team thuis year we would be out and out flag favs who knows we could have won it last year

With no restricted free agency Dangerfield would have left and we'd have received a single first round pick as compensation.
I thought the change regarding RFA was a small one to clear up some of the weird rules around player contracts ... not dropping RFA all together?

From this page:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-20/free-agency-to-change-under-new-cba

The current eligibility rules around tenure remained at 10 years and eight years with one minor change. Players who have not signed contracts within the previous two years will be able to become unrestricted free agents if they qualify as such, rather than having to become restricted free agents as per the existing rules.

The previous system was thought to deter players from signing long-term contracts before free agency.

Restricted free agents in 2017 such as Richmond's Dustin Martin and Fremantle's Nat Fyfe remain in that category, meaning their clubs can match any offer made to them from another club at the end of the season.

McClure is McClueless

It's all about the CBA and not just Lever who was stalling

This will be done next week. Where's that Bookmark thread?
