Pretty clear my end, tenure has to end some day and sounds like Dimma accepts and is comfortable handing the reigns over when he doesn't feel we can challenge any more.

IMO end of 2024 is the perfect time for that change. No one stays forever, the clubs role is to find the next great coach. Someone like Adam Yze or whoever the great assistants are at the time.

Balta out for up to 6-weeks. This is why we got Tarrant…. Remembering the decision to get Tarrant had to come BEFORE we drafted Gibcus.

So if we didn’t get Tarrant and Gibcus was drafted before us, our KPD stocks with Balta injured the next 4-6 weeks could easily have been Miller (1 game) and Biggy (no games).

So I don’t think anyone can logically criticise the trading for Tarrant. And he will come in very handy at some stage whilst Balta is injured.

Yep, Biggie and Gibcus might be our backline spine in 2025, but way too inexperienced to depend on them to hold down the two key positions simultaneously this year. The acquisition of Tarrant was a really good move given we're right back in the season - he allows Tigger and Broad (and to a lesser extent Grimes) to play a lot higher up and be more threatening as intercept defenders. No Tarrant, and they're anchored way closer to the opposition goal mouth, and that rebound capacity that creates so many scoring opportunities nowadays is greatly diminished.

Good news … injury update from Burgo said Balta likely back after the bye, so will only miss 2 x games v Bombers and Sydney. Not sure why the AFL website was listing him as 4-6 weeks ..???

I hope so, however 4-6 weeks technically is also after the bye

Next 4 games is going to be a real indication of where we're truly at. We play Sydney(7th) Port(10th won 4 of 5) Carlton (3rd beat us R1) & Geelong (6th), with Lynch Lambert & Balta possibly missing 2-3 of them we can either set ourselves up for a serious tilt at a 4th flag or we could see ourselves condemned to a mid table finish possibly missing finals.

The reason I bring this up is our wins this year have been against teams currently sitting: 9th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 16th & 18th, while our losses have come against 1st, 3rd, 5th & 15th. In some of those losses we were below full strength and once again we'll be below full strength again. Hopefully some of the young kids who are likely to get another opportunity are able to step up and take their chances.

I can see us losing all 4 games and being 6-8

Exactly. And this year we are seeing more "worse" teams that are fully committing to playing youth - most of which we have played in the past month.

We have done well to get back to this point, but it has only been an exercise of winning games against younger teams that we should be winning. To me the season starts now. 3 of the Top 5 from last year + a Top 3 team this year, no more beating up on kids, its time to see how we go against real teams

I’m not taking a heap of notice of this Friday’s game. A win would be a huge bonus given Sydney are full strength except Kennedy (I’d argue he’s a liability nowadays anyway) and Cunningham. Whilst we will be missing our best forward, best defender and Lambert. And it’s at the SCG. With us coming off 4 wins and Sydney a loss I’ll be staggered if we can jag a win Friday night. Scumps will have a field day giving goals to Buddy and Papley as well, just you watch.

Since when was Balta our best defender? He’d be like 5th or 6th

Fair call. I should have said best Key Position Defender (ie. capable of playing on Wright, McKay, Dixon etc…)

Yeah, I had a similar feeling, and I've been really confident over the last month or so. I feel like we've got a bit of a free pass in this one if we can come back and win 2 of the next 3 after the bye.

Lachlan Sullivan (Footscray VFL Captain) would've been a great get in the MSD if he had nominated correctly. Averaging 29 and 7 tackles and is tough as nails. Real shame he didnt nominate for the draft last year. Hopefully he's around at season's end.

Sydney had The Love Bite Hickey out and he's been outstanding all year.

Played 5 games all season and only 2 since round 3.

Yet you mention Lambert who has played less and could well be cooked???

Surprised no one mentioned Nick Blakey as an out for the Swans. A massive loss.

Kind of a mute point anyways - injuries. Rightly or wrongly - you can make a case either way - we chose to go into a season with so many players nearing the end and with significant injury history - Lambert, Prestia, Edwards, Cotchin, Riewoldt (won't include but a concern over Dusty getting back) and it's played out how you would expect. Most have continued their run of injuries and some have lost further form - see Exhibit A - Edwards, who is a liability after they tuck into the oranges.
We gambled - we're losing at the table.
It's disingenuous saying well these blokes deserved one more crack at it and then to turn around and complain when what was always likely going to happen when the signs were there happens.

Really torn between loading up with the best 22 and making a charge (short term view) and finding a way to keep blending in younger players like Maurice Ralphsmith Gibcus Ross Dow RCD Miller to continue building for the future(long term view).

It's easy to get caught up with being on the fringe of the top 8 and thinking maybe just maybe if we get all our best players on the park at the same time for a reasonable run of games that we could be a genuine threat for the flag.

On the flip side having the chance to develop the next generation to hold us in good stead moving forward is also quite tempting as it will set us up for sustained success, instead of going the path that sides like Brisbane Essendon Hawthorn did post their dominant eras since the start of the 2000s. Essendon have gone over 15 years since they won a final, Brisbane played finals once between 2004-2019, while Hawthorn have played 1 finals series since the end of the run in 2016. We've experienced the droughts that just go on and on, where the side is never really a threat and I don't want to go back to that having tasted what it's like to be a consistent finals side.

He's still been outstanding and a massive loss to them.
Was merely pointing out he has missed more than half the season, so it's not like he has been integral to how they have gone this year.

Lambert has clearly shown just how important he is to our structure and the way we play. Hickey is much the same for the Swans when up and running is important to their structure and how they play.

No one mentioned Blakely as he was a late out like Pickett was for us and agree he was a big loss, hence Mills going back to fill the role once the Swans realised they were missing his creativity from D50.

Agree regarding us gambling on the older blokes being able to go to the well one more time and having the same impact. As I just wrote above, it's easy to get caught up with us being on the fringes of the 8 and thinking maybe, just maybe, they can achieve the final flag together, but our record clearly says that's not the case.

Against teams in the top 8 we are 0-4 with a % of 78 and sit 14th of 18 sides. Against the bottom 8 we're 4-1 with a % of 148 and rank 7th of 18 sides. Clearly we're a middle of the table side and I continue to believe that we should be prioritising the development of the kids over chasing a dream as we can hurt our long term future by doing so.

Just like Lambo he’s a needed player
