cop out answer, but i believe they are equal..... you need to recruit the talent, because some things you just cant teach players.... but in order for players to reach their potential they need the development... i think if you look for anything in a player it should be character i.e the ability of that player to work hard i.e hill suban palmer mayne ets

when you put it that way about development.development is more important. i.e. adelaide. they have to be the best at developing young recruits.god i pray we have the goods when comes to developing players.i believe we do.

i guess the old saying goes a champion team will always beat a team of champions. look at sydney in 05/06.... they were definetly not the most talented side, but they have obviously developed their players well and were unlucky not to win back to back flags

I think it comes down to development and opportunities. I think we're finally getting our getting our development right.

I think the first round draft picks always will play a lot of games not only for their ability but because they a more inclined to be given more opportunities.

I feel so sorry for the Bennett Coppings and the Toby Striblings of the past. I've got no idea if with the right development they could have been good players but CC back in those days just was forced to pick a few players who would just rot on the sidelines then were delisted at the first opportunity.

When all the while he just had blind faith in players someone else developed would lead freo to a flag.

True. I guess the key is to recruit the talent that can be developed.

Palmer, Mayne, Subes etc have the talent, but also the willingness to learn and work hard.

Whereas for example Polak, Murph, Drum and even McDougall & Sampi (to take a free hit at the slime) have the talent, but none of the desire. These blokes were probably undevelopable (and if such a word doesn't exist - well it does now:))

My favourite sporting cliche. And 100% spot on.

Development has always been an achilles heel of Freo IMO. Remember when Schammer was hailed as the next superstar in his first year. Apart from Duffman, Pav, Hayden and Sandilands I can't think of that many Freo draftees whose debut years are surpassed by any other year in their career.

Not trying to be negative. That's just what I recall. (Though I confess I have been drinking).

that may be right, but i would put my house on it that suban/hill/mayne/palmer all end up having better years in the next couple of years than their debut
