For sure. I bet St Kilda wish they had Serong instead of coughing up that pick for Hill.

Yes it was a bold strategy last offseason by them. You just wonder how much their off-field position drove that, the need for a “name” signing, plus the other recruits. It has worked in one sense, but they did have an opportunity to secure another top line young talent.

Anyhow well done Fremantle, some good yooth and a capable coach more’s the pity. The next “upswing” is on the way lol

Very impressive is a strong word. Tonight’s game was probably the worst I’ve from any team this season... They also nearly beat their lowest score ever like 4 weeks ago
The conditions were dreadful.
I reckon Freo have been more impressive than us in Qld.

Sometimes you have to give credit where it's due.

They were the first time around as well, but we still beat them when we played them.

When you don't have a high skill level the team plays around it and is less impacted by poor weather conditions - they probably weren't stringing together 4 lace out kicks to advantage in perfect weather. Freo played better than Melbourne but they still almost coughed up the game in the 4th when Melbourne pressed.

This is why Richmond are so dangerous. They have a plan that doesn't rely on top level execution but it works even better when they are clean with the footy and they certainly have the talent across their list to be clean with the footy. I think another poster mentioned the concept in another thread - Richmond's gameplan has a lower ceiling than ours but the floor of their gameplan appears much higher than ours, so they play a much lower variance style. Works an absolute treat when they play a huge chunk of games on 1 ground under normal conditions. They have shown this season that they are capable of "getting it done" with their game style when forced out of their comfort zone. We have not got any runs on the board in that department.

Interesting article on AFL.com about Greg Williams trying to coach Paddy Dow into playing with more intensity and desperation.

Williams was made redundant because of cost cutting, but wouldn't say no to him coaching a few of our blokes (Sheed/Brander/Ainsworth).

I honestly think being able to consistently play with desperation is more of a contributor to success than skill or athletic ability. Even absolute crabs that have neither of the latter can still forge successful careers if they are able to do the former (obviously don't want too many McGinners in the team though).

That’s a really good post RookiePick 👍

I think we have acquitted ourselves pretty well so far in the second hub, given the circumstances and I can actually see some changes to our method, a lot more instances of tapping the ball on for example. Unfortunately doesn’t count for much if we can’t get the win, but I just hope we can see strong effort and winning at least the last game and a healthier squad so we can try and make an impact in the finals.

A real “duh” comment, but that 1-3 start will cruel us in the end. The poor first hub, ambushed by a young talented team in GC, losing to a top 4 team in Brisbane on their home deck and in their conditions and then coming up against Poort Power in their early season renaissance. #noluck 🤷‍♂️

Anyone else get the feeling (apart from EP that is) that the Cats will come out and absolutely stink it up against the Tigers and ruin our slim top 4 chances? Maybe the Crows can beat the tigers in the last round??
If the game against Adelaide is in Adelaide there is every chance...........Watch the AFL schedule it in QLD, probably metricon.

As you say that Sam Powell pepper springs to mind. Not a huge talent but tough as nails and can change a game. Wish we took him.

Thats exactly whats going to happen. I hate Chris Scott as a coach, but he at least understands the concept of losing the battle to win the war. He would know that Geelong dont need to win this game to secure their position on the ladder and im expecting him to rest a bunch of players with "general soreness".

I said before we should have done the same thing vs Richmond. Out of all the hub games they were the one we were most likely to drop, and we should have rested guys like Nic, Hurn, etc then instead of risking their omission in games we likely would have won with them in the side.

Richmond could also be thinking along those lines and the game could become a real stinker. Now that would be interesting.

Won’t happen, the respective coaches are far too competitive for that! They will want to get a victory over the other team before they meet in finals.

Richmond might like their chances in an EF played in QLD against another team with no home ground advantage, rather than playing Port in Adelaide first up?? They finish 5th, they’d get Dogs, Pies or GWS, so a true neutral venue for that game. Then they’d get loser of 1st v 4th, likely us, in QLD again. Might work better for them as they wouldn’t have to travel at all then

People still willing to lol at Cerra, Brayshaw, Serong etc?

Personally I rate all three very highly.
Would be absolutely stoked to have any of those three on our list.
All three would be mind blowing.

I think Serong is going to something special.

100% agree on the credit where it's due- they've played their best in QLD and we've played our worst.

But I'm still not sure credit is due. Walters kicked 3 of their 6 goals last night and they're averaging 48 for the season.

I think people cut them way too much slack. We're talking about a team with a dual brownlow medalist, a 'once in a generational' full forward who hasn't kicked a goal this year, Walters (gun), Mundy (gun), multiple top 10 picks and a backline full of stars. They should be winning more than 6 games in a season.

Absolutely expecting it to happen.

Unless, we lose.

Then Geelong will smash Richmond.

Hypothetically, would you give up OA for one of those players?

It's a new coach with a new game plan.
I reckon most pundits would say they're ahead of where most people thought they'd be.

They will have high expectations for next year though.
Nothing short of finals will be enough I think.

Ummmm

Very tough question.

Short answer probably not.

OA hasn’t shown that he can play as a KPP in any of the four spots, plus he can pinch hit in the ruck.
Such a versatile skill set is rare.

This won’t be a popular statement:

BUT
Barrass I would trade to get one of them ..... preferably Serong.
