Dunno how true this is, but apparently Saints and Crows caught playing funny buggers in the trade period:

AFL shuts down secret ‘side deal’

The AFL has reportedly caught the Crows and Saints red-handed in a secret attempt to swindle the competition’s mysterious free agency compensation rules.

Feel a bit bad for the Crows TBH - they are a rabble right now and I cant see how they are going to pull themselves out of the hole they have dug. I also think the compo pick system is an absolute chook raffle.

Compo system is a cluster **** .

The bit that annoys me most is that any compo pick pushes all other Clubs back a pick.
I reckon that if the VaFL deem it a first round compensation then the team loosing the player still gets the compo pick BUT the beneficiary team then surrenders their first round pick.
That’s by no means all the changes I would like but it would be a good start.

As for Adelaide,sure they are at a low ebb but as long as they don’t try to take short cuts and have some patience, the system assists a slow but systematic re-build.

Look no further to what Brisbane have been able to do. The key point is that there are no short cuts .... it takes time.

Gee GC going to trade Wright for some late picks and pay his salary at the same time.

they’ve gone back to being a basket case

Sam Day is a spud. Wright has some serious talent to show still imo

Just on reported ‘salary cap’ issues at Pies and them trying to offload contracted players.

Would love all other clubs to steer clear of taking any of Pies contracted players.

1. Means Pies May have breached salary cap = penalty.
2. Means Pies have to renegotiate a bucket load of contracts and prune everywhere = bad juju.
3. Means other trade targets will, in future, be less likely to accept back ended contracts = less attracting players from other clubs.

If reports are correct, Pies made their bed, shat in it, now they can reap the ‘rewards’

You make as important point about free agency.

Whilst the overriding concept was fine, the AFL were warned right from the getgo that their thoughts processes of players ONLY leaving from good teams for lower teams simply for a greater pay-day was flawed. Most players want to play finals & win a flag.

Despite being warned that the chances of good young players leaving bottom or middle-of-the-road clubs for contenders was dismissed by the hierarchy as 'unlikely'.

So enter Lynch & Cameron, which has gone 180 on what the compensation was designed. For lower teams to get the player AND maintain an early pick to facilitate a rise up the ladder. Instead we see lower teams lose a good player to a contender who gets to keep their pick, meaning the lower teams stay low & the better teams rejuvenate & stay at the top.

With players already allocated into bands for trading according to contract length & amount, its not hard for the AFL to give a points value to each player on the move. For the teams that finish say top 4, they pay the points value on draft night as they slide back the order.

Reports of a future 4th or 5th round pick AND Gold Coast pay some of his salary. That's crazy.
If you get bloke that still has plenty of potential for a token pick like that, you don't deserve salary assistance also.

I just read an article where David King said Geelong have to pay market value and it was them that set it, with the Tim Kelly trade. Specifically stated that they were happy for the picks to come in but are now resisting paying them out. Marvelous.

End of the day, Cats saw this coming which is why they banked all the 1st rounders. They will try to get a better deal but I won't be surprised if they pony up in the end. A Tim Kelly for Jeremy Cameron straight swap (in essence) is a slight win to the Cats anyway (I rate KPF over mids as they are much harder to find).

David King speaking some truths;

But North Melbourne premiership winner David King said the Cats were being hypocritical, having forced West Coast to pony up for a deal with Tim Kelly last year. The move cost the Eagles picks 14, 24 and 37 plus their 2020 first-round selection, for Kelly, pick 57 and a 2020 third-round pick.

“That’s a fair price, Geelong were happy to play ball then,” King said on Trading Day.

“They were happy to get them coming in. And now they’ve got to go the other way, they want to say ‘aww, no, we’re not prepared to do this, we’re not prepared to do that’.

“Well, that’s market rate. You guys set it last year. Cameron’s as much an important part in the premiership window for the Cats as to what Kelly is for the West Coast Eagles.

“At the end of the day, we’ve got a very similar case with the same club, 12 months apart.

“So they know the work, they know if they can get out of this with just giving up two first-round picks, it’s a bargain.”

Cameron aside, there’s some pretty big question marks hanging over each of those names as to their ability to either rediscover previous form or fulfil potential or if they’re actually any good
 
2 M Peter is now a Bomber for a future fourth rounder.

Bit of a nothing trade Wright is and has always been a timid and non impactful player, despite his stature.

Given the state of Essendon's list its a good cheap pickup that fill a gap until they are able to get some better credentialed tall's into their team.

It's a trade that reflects two things:

Firstly how bad things are at Essendon that he is an upgrade.
Secondly that things are on the improve at Gold Coast, if he is surplus to needs.
