Geez it's dire reading over on the cockburners board.
Half of them have come to the realisation that this season is f’ed already, some of them are ready to jump ship if there was any other team apart from us to support in WA, some of them have finally begun to realise that they should have drafted some decent key forwards with their high draft picks over the last few years and that Taberner might not be the saviour they're looking for.

It sure brings a tear to the eye....

Agreed, they're missing a chunk of decent guys in their mid-20's to bridge the gap between Mundy, Fyfe and Walters and their young guys. Lyon and co really f’ed their list up. I think they're looking at another 3-4 years in the bottom half of the ladder minimum.

Pretty sure both teams have always been shit, so I'm not sure Ross Lyon can be blamed (other than blamed for getting both perennial losers to Grand Finals).

Imagine if they had taken Brayshaw and WA born Naughton instead of Brayshaw and Cerra like any sane club crying out for key forwards would have?

And there my friend lies the problem.

Ross The Boss did to the Cockburners the exact same thing that he did to St Blunders.

He left both Clubs with an unbalanced and substandard list.

2018 draft the Cockburners traded pick 6 that could have landed them Ben King.

Imagine their young KPF potency, going forward, if they had taken Naughton in the 2017 draft and Ben King the following year.

Fortunately for the rest of the competition the Cockburners suffer from " Key Position Player Blindness " and will take a quality small over a quality tall early in the draft, pretty well every time.


I guess thats understandable when they already have the " Next Big Thing " Key Forward Matt Taberner on their list, I mean surly that is enough.

Harsh reality is that the Cockburners are not going to be a contender, until they fully comprehend, that regularly kicking less than 10 goals a game, isn't going to win you many games.

I wouldn’t worry about them, they’ll be happy again in a few days. The mood was exactly the same after Round 1, but then they had a nice win at home, so finals (and high scoring shootout footy) was back on the agenda. Then Carlton, they’re all on suicide watch. Hawks in Perth next week. Easy W. Sugar high. Crows at AO. Devastating loss. Rinse and repeat.

I think they’re in for a fair bit longer in the wilderness. The green shoots coming through will most likely not be good enough in time to coincide with what’s left of Fyfe’s prime (they’ve already wasted Walters’ it looks like), so then can they build on a group of could-be star youngsters by nailing the draft into the future. History suggests not at Freo, and history of the teams that have loaded up on gun kids also suggests it’s a brutally difficult one to get right: see, Carlton, GC, Melbourne, St Kilda.

Longmuir is a good coach, he’s given them more of a spine and seemingly more professionalism than they had during the Lyon era, but I just don’t think the talent is going to line up on the same timeline for a while. Can’t afford to lose any of these cornerstone kids either.

I could see Hawks winning over here against them. I think Hawks at 2-1 at Optus (beat Freo in 2018, us in 2019 and lost to us last year).

I don't get the criticism. Why draft more forwards when you've already loaded up on elite front half talent? To complement young Taberner they've got a virtual all-star lineup in Lobb, McCarthy, Matera, Hogan & Bennell, right? They're set for the next 5 years, surely.

Hogan a “guaranteed 60 goal per year” forward, as though he ever did anything more than get out the back for a historic contested ball winning Melbourne midfield to chip to him.

To be fair, it’s hardly like there’s a wealth of WA key forward talent, by all means bring the most red flagged one home so he can get on the nose beers closer to where he grew up. Much rather that than Darling or Allen or Naughton or English or Georgiades or....

The way he’s playing at the moment he’d just about be their best player, and they want to stick him in the coaches box. Sums them up pretty well.

I couldn't buy into the Freo hype off-season. Media decided they would be big improves based on some ultra defensive efforts toward the end of 2020 season. That's nice but you can't win games if you can't score either.

Their forward line is stuffed and I am not sure how they can fix it. Even drafting the best young KPP won't work, as they will need 3 or 4 pre-seasons to develop properly.

It’s a genuine rivalry and their track record of putting on a good game is strong
