With Suban , Griffin, Yarran , Ibbotson, Sandi, Mundy, Pearce, Johnson, ballas, Dawson, Clarke more than likely not on our list by the end of 2019 plus question marks on a number of other players how do we replenish our list.

Mundy may play in 2019, but it is unlikely.

I believe we will need to bring in 7 to 8 players each year for the next two years plus additional players should we loose anyone like Tucker or Balic.

This is a massive task especially since our window for a premiership is 2019 to 2022, so a lot of these players need to be ready to hit the ground running.

Which players should we target??

I would like to see us bring in 3 mature age players a year. Simply go best available, but ideally 2 forward pockets.

The free agency pool is quite thin but hopefully we can add 1 or 2 during this period.

The drafting and trade period at the end of this season is extremely important and will shape our fortunes for the next decade. The last trade period was arguably our most successful ever, if we repeat that we may build a seriously strong side. There is evidence that some of the guys we have drafted are going to be seriously good players.

The club also has the following on their side:
Captain on a 6 year deal;
Coach with years to run;
Brand new training and playing facilities;
Youthful, skillful, exciting team.

There is plenty to be attracted to Freo right now. The biggest coup will be getting Mitch McGovern onto our list, it would be fantastic to get another decent contested marker into the squad right now.

If I was Freos recruiting department I would be picked the best available with the first pick, probably a solid mid, and then getting the best available for particular positions that we are lacking in.

Lobb, Coniglio, Hogan, Jack Martin, McGovern brothers, Nathan Wilson.

That list certainly hits most of our needs. If we can snag two or three over the next 3 years along with our draft picks we should be well on our way, easier said than done though.

I think most of them would be RFA by the time their contracts are up. We need them to follow Billy and Hamling and request a trade back to WA, or even better, nominate Freo. Hopefully we can get away with trading second rounders for them and continue to use our first rounders in the draft. We'll fill a few senior spots by elevating Nyhuis, Deluca, Grey and possibly Strndacia over the next couple of seasons.

I think we need to look at mature age players like we did previously with Broughton, Ballas , Barlow, Silvagni and hope we get a few good players. Hopefully someone like McGovern or Jj.

The 1st and maybe the 3rd I'll give you..
One bad game doesn't reflect the overall status. The fact is Freo have some very good kicks coming through, including Weller, Tucker, Blakely, Ryan. We have existing exceptional users like Walters, and the Hill boys (obviously Brad had a low D.E. game, but is generally a good user).

Kersten is also highly skillful, he just doesn't get the ball anywhere near enough. Then you have Fyfe and Neale who are the extractors so they don't count. Mundy, Crozier and Johnson are generally good kicks as well.

So, like I said - the signs are there that the skill level will increase with more experience into these young blokes.

I didn't think anyone was taking my list seriously. We haven't landed anyone of note in 20 years and I can't see anything changing going forward.

Dam if only these guys were of note...
L. McPharlin, C. Tarrant, B. Hill, D. Headland, J. Farmer, T. Modra, P. Bell, J. Carr, C. Sylvia, H. Bennell, J. Hamling, D. Pearce (was a good get at the time)

Thimble and pea tricks, smoke and mirrors both have more substance than these wish lists unless the players being talked about express a wish to play for Freo or at least want to move back to WA.

Need a forward/ruck in the athletic mould like what Zac Clarke should have been. Maybe also a small forward, could have one on the list already ie Deluca.

Also, with Freos game plan of moving it through the corridor we need some more efficient and skillful mids.

Sandilands, Aaron
Johnson, Michael
Mundy, David
Griffin, Jonathon
Dawson, Zac
Pearce, Danyle
Ballantyne, Hayden
Spurr, Lee
Ibbotson, Garrick

This list is straight off footywire. It's the list of our oldest players in descending order and finishing at Ibbotson as a 29 year old. There are obviously players not from this list that will likely need to go: Clarke, Suban and some youngsters wanting to go home: Balic, Langdon, Sheridan etc

So it's a fair turnover. From the list above I'd say no one is likely to still be there in 2019.

No one is going to command any sort of pick of note. Maybe upgrades, but realistically the recruiting department have a very difficult job on their hands. Especially when we don't have a 2nd rounder.

You'd hope Suban goes and we get a 4th rounder just to reduce our age profile. Balic maybe a 3rd rounder.

We'll need to get WA based players that are possibly considered spuds by their supporters. Possibly upgrade 3-4 rookies to cover some list spots and have another crack at the rookie draft.

Really want to see what Pearce, Apeness and Ubergang can provide, but no guarantees on any of them.

What we have is an average spread of about 35 players that can lay claim to best 22. Once we reduce the age profile we'll see who has what it takes and condense the list to 25 players considered best 22 and from player 26+ they're basically considered the new spuds and only depth players.

It will be a very difficult assignment. Next 2 years are further culling years. Next year we should aim to play finals, but real impact would be around 2019-20.

Realistically we'll be targeting: Schoenfield, Matera, Ah Chee.

One of Wilson or McGovern would be great.

Matera and Greenwood.

Ah Chee has not impressed me. What is Schoenfeld speed like? He looks to be an outside runner, with good endurance but if he does not have good top end pace you can not play as an outside player in the AFL.

Lobb and Coniglio are out of contract at the end of 2019. I can dream :)

Of those, only Mundy and Johnson are playing decent footy at the moment. I don't think it's as bad as some around here do.

This would be the biggest cut in our history, in one season, with what some people are suggesting. Bigger then 2008? We will cut at least 7 maybe 8 at best. Big risk when we re rebuilding. We want to keep building and winning, not go backwards and finish 14th again. Fyfe did stay this young group will take us places etc.

no chance all 9 blokes will be gone in 1 year. danyle pearce and spurr are contracted until 2018

I remember the 2008 departures like it was yesterday. In 2008, Geelong were almost invincible and had the 2nd oldest team in the AFL. Freo had the oldest team in the AFL and we were 14th with 6 wins and 16 losses. we only had 7 guys aged 23 or under.

Shaun McManus, Peter Bell, Jeff Farmer, Justin Longmuir (j-lo), Matt and Josh Carr all left. Robert Warnock was traded too.

I am not a fan of culling the list like crazy like we did in 2008. I rather do it in moderation. In 2008, we retired all the old dudes, in 2009, we cued most of the duds. Again, I prefer not to cut 8-9 players off the main squad. I rather go the "Devils Style" rebuild: 666.

Delist/Retire 6 guys in 2017, another 6 in 2018 then another 6 in 2019. Seems fair to me.

That is great perspective. The other thing is that we have opportunities for player replacement now including FA and the Academy.

I don't see a reason to keep any of them. Ross likes Suban and Ballas, but they won't be part of our next flag.

Taberner and Collins can stay on a minimum 1 year deal, but can leave if they get a better deal else where.
Offer good deals to Crozier, Balic, Tucker, Langdon and hope they stay.
No idea about Sheridan, 1 year minimum deal probably unless he gets a good offer elsewhere.
I would move Apeness to the rookie list just to save salary cap space.

At best that is 7 players gone, more than likely a few others will leave as well.

The year after it will be pretty much the same.
Sandi, Johnson, Sutcliffe, Apeness, D Pearce, Spurr all could be out the door. Mundy could play for 2019, but may be done as well.

Then once you add any players who want to go home or have not made it I think it will 7 or 8 players per year for the next 2 years. We can sign mature age players on 1 year deals, and I would rather give them a shot than hope one of the above players some how turn into a good player.
