Reserves to Return

Maybe Fremantle and West Coast could join your pool party. Fremantle can bring a keg and West Coast could bring something else to get things pumping.

According to Chris Scott, Eagles are the midget. :p

Can the AFL pick up the tab for a Vic only competition - surely the clubs would have to pay their way?

What would be the cost of running a Vic-only competition? Obviously travel costs would be negligable or non-existent, and accomodation costs completely non-existent.

There are still other expenses though, such as medical and training staff.

The AFL is already funding AFL Victoria, and AFL clubs already pay license fees and generally contribute to the cost of operations for their affiliate clubs. Hawthorn pay several hundred thousand a year in operating costs to Box Hill (its in their Annal Report), Carlton do the same with the Northern Blues. Collingwood and Geelongs expenses would be part of their football department spend, and they would still pay the 200k plus for a separate license fee.

I've heard to have your own reserves in the vfl, such as collingwood and geelong, it costs an extra 250k per year.

Obviously with an entire new league it'll be a little be higher, but with additional sponsorships, attendance etc I can't imagine it.d be that much of burden.

Wayne Jackson was the one who got rid of the Reserves originally, was he not?

If they're changing back to the status quo less than 15 years later, it does make that particular decision in 1998-99 seem...perplexing.

Sounds like a good idea. It would cost a bit of money to set up and run, it's a more expensive alternative to the VFL alignment. This will work for St.Kilda, as the current alignment with Sandringham isn't working as smoothly as you would like.

might be a silly question but are there enough players on an afl list to field 2 unaffiliated teams?

Still reckon the AFL will fund all teams to have a stand alone team as an attempt at footy dept equalisation by the back door.
North and a couple of other struggling Victorian clubs will certainly be up the creek if the AFL doesn't.

I dont mind it and i hope the VFL gets back to what it was. The VFL could possibly introduce some sort of EPL relegation system. I enjoy watching it on the ABC of a Saturday. Dont think it will be ready for next year though.

A decision made purely in the name of financial expediency, with absolutely zero regard for football or operational considerations.

Such decisions never last. You could possibly make a case that it was a required move at the time. With the league now flush with TV cash, no longer required.

Obviously a stand alone reserves team is the preferable model for any football club, once more AFL clubs are able then crunch time was always going to come for the current model. We may be there now.

Some suggested play at suburban grounds and some curtain raisers.

Apart from a couple of exceptions there couldn't be.
However punt rd is near the g as is collingwoods new oval curtain raisers could be played there before wandering down to the G or Etihad

Would imagine Collingwood's would be at Victoria Park, as they already are.

Essendon's would be at Windy Hill. Carlton's at Princes Park. Footscray's at Whitten Oval. Richmond's at Punt Road. North's at Arden Street. Geelong at Kardinia.

No doubt, they'd probably play some games elsewhere too, like regional centres.

Hawthorn, I'm not sure about. Would they just play at Waverley? Or perhaps back at Glenferrie Oval? And St Kilda also- back at Moorabbin or down at Seaford (does the Linen House Centre have any spectator provision?)

Also not sure about the Dees.
