I imagine a lot of footage of Tony Greig would have been covered by BBC, and time restraints wouldn't have allowed it. Maybe a DVD will be released in time showing more highlights such as his 13 wickets in a game, etc.

My first memories of Greig were with the World XI in Australia in 1971-72. I thought he was a South African player, I didn't realise he has qualified for England, and he played in the Ashes series of 1972.

It wasn't his batting or bowling that impressed, it was his in close fielding, often standing right on the edge of the pitch looking for a bat/pad tickle. In the 1972 Ashes series he impressed as a competant number 6 batsman, a wicket taking first change bowler, and capable slipper.

Come the 1974-75 Ashes series and he was a top order batsman, medium pacer, and occasional off spin bowler. He perfected the "up and under" shot and made many runs against the pace of Lillee & Thomson, getting under their skin.

Then in the 1975 Ashes, he became England captain and showed a flair for this role as well.

A highlights DVD would prove very interesting.
I first remember him in 71/72 as well.

At the time I didn't realize that he had represented England in the 1970 series vs Rest Of The World in England.

I know nothing other than cricket with TG. Im 39 and WSC was all the rage when i was 5 so an aussie summer for me has always had him in it in one capacity or another.

Very very sad day. Respect to him and regards to all around him.

Will be missed. very missed.

Will never forget the 3 way banter between TG, BL and Richie moderating... not even talking about the rip off stuff... (which was classic too admittedly)

RIP TG.

Vale Greigy.

A Waverley stalwart & a bloke never afraid of a beer & a chat.

Sadly missed.

Equally sad to think that he's the second of the Centenary Test players to go.

I propose that all ODI Series between Australia and England, or at least one of the matches, should be played for the Tony Greig Cup. His impact throughout most cricketing nations has been large, but particularly in these two countries, and I think that this would be a fitting tribute to him.
R.I.P. Greigy

I believe that would be wonderful, but the Poms hate his guts coz of the way he "defected" in their eyes, although if it's a trophy on our lands they mightn't have much of a say

Maybe the whole tri series in Aus should be renamed the Tony Grieg Cup

RIP Tony Greig, he commentated from when I was born so to hear he is gone so suddenly is such a shock.

Not if their family and friends post on BigFooty, no.

Otherwise I just post my thoughts.

Have a modicum of respect and a sense of what's remotely appropriate.

In a RIP thread, I don't want to see, read or get a hint of anything less than moderately respectful.

Get it?

RIP Tony Greig!
He and Bill have always been the voices of cricket, thought he was gonna talk us through another Ashes series...

Will be missed

Some of the video compilations posted here really make you appreciate how good/funny and a part of the australian summer he was.

I still remember every Aus summer where it was just Bill Tony Richie and Chappelli, and it was all fun and games

Two of them will no longer be there and Richie is basically not there most times now. We've replaced them with classless clowns

Really sad day.

One of those genuine larger than life characters, and he was a hell of a cricketer, don't worry about that. He couldn't help saying what was on his mind "We'll make them grovel" wasn't the brightest thing to say before a West Indies tour, but knew the game inside out. He was also an epileptic, had been since early teens.

66 is just too young.

1st recollection of greigy was the centenary test and then the WSC games at waverley - as a kid i always loved the booing of just the one guy in world cricket - tony greig.
it was probably only bothams arrival did i fully appreciate why greigy was booed - because he played cricket like an australian, not like a traditional english captain. win it at all costs (rather than draw), and loyal to the end for his team.
thats my everlasting memory - the 1st cricketer booed at every opportunity - and no doubt he loved it.

I won't lie, I won't miss his commentary, I was always looking forward to the day I wouldn't have to listen to him anymore, but not like this.

No one should have to go out the way he did and he still should have had a few more years to go. I hope his family and friends get through this as best as they can. RIP.

Great player, it's a shame he never got to represent South Africa, instead of playing for those assholes.

Sad day, probably the most influential figure in modern cricket. From the stand he took joining World Series Cricket, right through to the innovations in commentary/broadcasting, and technology that he was a big part of.
