Surely with the current situation, the fact we're playing a more exciting brand of footy and we've got two big vic clubs coming our way..we must be a sneaky chance to get a Thursday/Friday night slot.

Oh and we haven't had one since 16.

Thoughts?

I live in Melbourne. I really don’t think people on this board understand how irrelevant the Fremantle Dockers football club are to the general footy public in Victoria. In their eyes, we are a meaningless non entity in football terms, the classic interstate “make up the numbers” team in the league. Ever the Fox footy C-team of commentary have no respect for us (as Clearly shown at the weekend) and they bloody watch us play every week! Most footy people in Melbourne have never seen most of our players play. The Melbourne powerbrokers in the AFL are totally indifferent to the dockers. We are by far the least mentioned and commented on team in the media. Even the Gold Coast and Port Adelaide get far greater Coverage than we do.
If you think we will get a primetime game sitting in 15th on the ladder you are having a laugh.
Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond, Bulldogs. Rinse and repeat a variation of those 5 clubs every primetime game with an odd extra like GWS or Essendon thrown in. That’s business baby! And the dockers are bad for business in the AFL.
Even the fact we have proper crowds at our games should be a big positive but no - that won’t happen. They’d rather show one of their sacred cows in an empty ground than us. As an aside - hawks should be kicked off primetime after stinking the place out last Thursday night Again, awful side to watch.

100% agree with this Dockeroo, but if we start knocking those sacred cows over regularly as we did in 2013 - 2015 we will start getting the prime time slots again and people will start taking an interest. Gold Coast were less than irrelevant the last few years but it hasn't taken much for them to become the darlings of the media - ditto for Brisbane.

I think we have made ourselves irrelevant with the route we have taken in decimating and rebuilding the team, and hopefully we start to reap the rewards of that now. If we have to suck up the last four years of being pretty rubbish to build a premiership winning side, I'll take that! :)

This is all true, literally the only way we start seeing prime time games again is if we're sitting in the top 8 and playing finals because they're forced to take notice. Any exciting game a Vic team plays is worth 5x one of our good games in terms of potential billing. It's a shame because you see so many garbage Thurs/Fri night games from these Victorian hacks when many other teams could put on a better show if given a chance.

I've never understood why the AFL don't give every team a Friday night slot each season. With two teams playing across 23 rounds that's 46 opportunities. Give each team at least one game and the other 28 availabilities can go to those that 'deserve it'.

For a organisation that continually boasts of equality and growing the game it's dreadful we haven't had a spot in for years - that's close to 200 opportunities they've rejected us!

And this is all without factoring in Thursday nights

Money and ratings, we don't bring in either. Every sport does it though so this isn't an AFL thing it's just a money thing.

Just from an historical perspective, it would be better not to have Friday night games. Freo's record is atrocious on Friday nights.

When did Geelong and Collingwood land in Perth? They'll have to serve their 14 days prior to playing a WA team so if they landed Saturday it will rule out a Thursday or Friday game in round 8.

Eddie suggested it will be Fremantle v Collingwood in round 8, I'll guess on the Saturday night.

Amazingly Gold Coast has NEVER played a Thursday or Friday night fixture. Not a single one.

rumour mill on Fox site suggesting its the cats on a monday

They have been generally right too
Nic Nat let slip on the radio on Saturday that they were playing Geelong after the derby. That's assuming the players have been given a heads up.

Heard that we are being shafted to a Monday game after the derby

We might struggle to even pull a 30,000 crowd to that, jesus

What's the difference between playing Monday night and Thursday night? They're both stand alone games with national exposure with work/school the next day.

This was true except for 2013 - even Vics knew most of the side then (Pav, Fyfe, Hill, Walters, Sandilands, Mundy, McPharlin, Ballantyne etc). Probably why we had such a positive reaction during the Pre-GF procession.

We won't be a prime time fixture though unless we're in the top 4, because then we become a team that the Vics need to BEAT. This was the case in 2013-2015, they were never talking about how great our team was, every headline over east was - WHO CAN BEAT DA DOCKERS???

Its not going to happen until we become a top 4 team again.

I'm not a huge fan of Thursday nights either however the theory with those is if you can snag a sicky on Friday then you are prepped for a long weekend

same as sunday arvo, any game that backs on to a work day sucks. We have got alot less Sunday games recently which is good, hate them. Monday is even worse.

suspect you are right, if its raining on the monday i can't see too many getting to the game.
