Alright, Hawthorn post up:

This could have been about 8,000 words to be honest but it's all about trust.

I didn't see any of it yesterday. From players to their teammates, from players in their own roles, from movement patterns, from everything. And that's why the second quarter in particular was just horrific.

I think the path to fixing it is relatively easy, but it requires a large confidence boost for a group that probably has none of it right now.
Excellent Rick 👍 FWIW my 15 year old son described them as having ‘no chemistry’ the potential is there amongst the playing group but ‘they couldn’t join the dots’ I thought he was quite insightful but you’ve nailed it, no trust. Far out that is something that can’t be manufactured it has to be internalised, some sort of crisis or spiritual awakening. Who knows when that will happen? Hopefully soon, when it does we’ll all know because it will be a different team on the park on that day…..

It's funny, cause I appreciate everyone's positive feedback and it's valued, but this was the closest I've ever got to having a post ready to go but binning it instead.

We all value different things, but to me, if someone said, 'your teammate doesn't trust you', it'd be like a dagger through the heart. It's basically my version of some of the rants we read elsewhere on social media, just with the luck of having multiple years of learning from AFL coaches behind me and getting to know a few things from it.

It's why I was so reluctant to post it because I think the whole not being good at football yet part is completely understandable. Mostly anyway. But trust should be at the top of the priority pile. Personally I've always thought that should be as close to mutually exclusive from football skills as possible.

It’s an interesting question - when I watch a team at the other end of the trust spectrum like Collingwood last weekend, I can see that they trust and value each other as people, but also they have trust in their teammates’ skills to execute (whether that is to spoil, or shepherd, or handball well, or take a mark, or kick the goal if they tap the ball to them). So to me football skills are absolutely part of the trust they have built up in each other.

This manifests almost every week when North players will attempt to kick the ball to Larkey even though there might be another option. We've seen analysis of the difference between North and a lot of other teams, where their mids will look for options out near 50 and in turn, those players will take the shot or find a player open to take a pass for a shot closer to goal. Our mids will often try to run the ball to about 60 or 70 out and then roost the ball in for Larkey (when he's playing as the deep forward).

In those situations I'm semi-convinced that the mids don't have 100% faith in the half forward line so they try to go to the most trusted and reliable kick in the team. Another dependable KPF and a reliable crumbling forward would make a huge difference of course, but having faith in the half forward line and hitting a few on the chest 50 or 60 out from goal might give the mids more of a chance to structure up into a defensive position while the forwards are doing their job.

Perhaps sheezel at CHF might change this dynamic?

I think we are all waiting for him to move to the forward line but maybe CHF is a stretch. Although he's probably capable of giving it a crack.

With Sheez, PC, Z, Lark, Eddie and someone the size of Chom along with a decent rotation strategy to mix things up a bit when required I reckon we'd look better.

Okely doke, Adelaide post is up:

Because half of Adelaide's goals started from North Melbourne's forward half, the post is largely about that and establishing what should be happening. The plan is I can use this post as a benchmark and then return to it down the track when the forward half defence is better. Hopefully.

Then also a couple of notes in the odds and ends section about a potential defensive mix I've probably spent too much time thinking about, and a bit about how the rejigged midfield mix went, aka sympathy for Will Phillips.

Last two paragraphs are interesting

Wonder how much homework they take home to study and revise about what their roles are, or is it more practical motor skills and physical repitition.

I’m imaging my workplace as Rick suggested, expecting the new grads to run everything as they learn on the job and implement the strategy of a new leadership team, and not one good senior colleague left to guide them. Very sobering thought.

Absolutely revel in your weekly dose of taking me from despair to understanding.

Hope you appreciate the service you are providing to those of us who are hard core fans who are hurting. Thanks.

Sounds eerily like workplace with a team of inept executives and project managers actually.

Application Specialists left to workout how the applications actually work and how to implement them on the run.

My boss and I have lamented the inexperience and poor decision-making of the kids (twenty-somethings) in our organisation for the past 15 years or so. Lo and behold, these same kids are now in their 40s and we are only just getting to the point of being able to fully trust them in the past year or two.

This has me excited for season 2039.

Just so no one panics (lol), this week's North post will be either Sunday night or most likely Monday morning thanks to Greek Easter commitments and preparing to eat approximately half my body weight at Sunday lunch.
You didn't plan on jumping off Frankston pier today then Rick?

Καλό Πάσχα! :αυστηρό βλέμμα

We are live with the St Kilda post:

This is more of a set the tone piece for the next few weeks - I think all the positional changes we saw should hold barring injury, so it's a look at all of them and what they may or may not mean.

I think I'm still full, maybe that's what provided the energy to get this all done

Tell me about it, this weekend's all over the shop. Although for some reason I can almost never start writing straight away after a game, need some time to go over things before words start spilling out.
