Proper commentator that enjoyed describing the game and giving listener an insight into what he was seeing as opposed to these ego-driven buffoons on Seven.
Loved all sport even though he was first to admit he was no good at it. Lovely guy who loved a red and a smoke.

So sad, he was only commentating last week on 6PR; was still as good as ever.

One of the doyens of the golden age of AFL commentary in the 90s along with Sandy Roberts, Dennis Commetti, Bruce McAvaney and Peter Landy. Remained one of my favourite voices of AFL commentary, just a genuine passion of the game (and sport as a spectacle) with no ego, no ulterior motives. Current day commentators could learn from the way he commentated and the way he conveyed the sport. A massive, and most unexpected loss; his commentary on 6PR was akin to his prime years still.

R.I.P Drew Morphett, you were one of the reasons I fell in love with our great game during my childhood.

Very sad news. I was lucky enough to have a couple of beers with him one night a few years ago. He was a ripper bloke and told some bloody funny stories.

Last thing from Drew I remember is a bit he did with Rex Hunt taking the piss out of Billy Brownless' first game in VFL/AFL footy on The Footy Show a few weeks back. I got totally sucked in for the first few minutes - Drew sounded exactly the same as he did in the late 1980's. I only twigged once the call got absolutely outlandish, though Rex's part of the call refelected his loss of voice compared to earlier years.

RIP Drew Morphett. I hear they've renamed the Horse-Racing District of South Australia in your honour...
