A tragedy, in the true meaning of the word, for the Walsh family, the Adelaide football club and the AFL on a whole.
This day will never be forgotten unfortunately.

Not a lot of good ever comes of things like this, but hopefully some families who are having a quarrel can put aside their issues and make up and everyone gives their dad & mum or son & daughter an extra hug today.

RIP Walsh

Utterly staggered.

Won't even be mad if the boys can't get up against Melbourne this week, a good number of them must be absolutely floored by this.

RIP Walsh.

Given the history Phil had at both clubs, along with it being the first match Adelaide plays after the tragedy - perhaps name it the Phil Walsh Tribute Game and make it an annual event? An argument could be made to do the same thing for the following clash against Port, but the Showdown probably has too much other baggage associated with it to make for a suitable annual tribute match?

Good call.

On a side note, can we all be a bit classy and leave speculation on the causes (a couple of obvious possibilities) alone until more news comes to light - it's just not the time or place.

Let's all heed this please folks

Bit of an excerpt from what I posted on the main AFL board

For me it was one of those moments in time I won't forget when I heard on a news update this morning saying that it was Phil Walsh that had passed in the murder in SA. Was in traffic at the time and immediately just felt flat as a tack, sense of numbness enveloped me. Couldn't believe it and ended up pulling over to compose myself.

I know he wasn't "young" in the fact that he'd lived half a life and given 35 years to AFL but I still feel that at least at the Crows he was a young pup with a lot of knowledge and wisdom yet to give to those players.

As an assistant to Woosha he was one of the main reasons behind a West Coast resurgence up the ladder in the early part of this decade and than went to Port as a right hand man to Hinkley who revatalised that group.

From all past reports and whats been said today he was just an absolute footy head who loved the game and knew it very well, arguably spent too much time studying the game at the detriment of time with his family. He was a smart, tactical coach and liked myself a bit of a footy head. I'd have loved to sit and have a beer or a surf with, to play under and learn from.

My thoughts go out to Phil's immediate family particularly his wife and daughter. To the Crows staff, players, members and fans as a football family stand together with you today, sharing and supporting you in your grief and loss.

Utmost gratitude to you for your time and service at West Coast Phil. Reinvented some players careers as a forwards coach and I'm sure they are just as much thankful as we are.

R.I.P Phil Walsh - taken far to soon, a great thinker and great servant of the greatest game that is, AFL #RIPWalshy #WeStandAsOne

In the last 7 years, he's spent 5 at WCE, 1 at Port and 1 Adelaide.

I think people are forgetting our players and staff would have known Walsh longer and been closer than most at the SA clubs. A WCE/Adelaide tribute game is fair enough.

Doesn't really matter in the end (maybe both Port and Eagles can can have tribute games for him), but him being from SA and being at Port for 10 years, an annual Adel v Port tribute game would fair enough. The important thing is that he's not forgotten.

Thanks for sharing your footy passion and knowledge at West Coast Phil Walsh
Rest in Peace, and may your wife and daughter have enough love and strength to get through this horror.

Difficult to come to terms with the idea. Worked so hard for so long as an assistant, got his crack, and then ... this, halfway through his first season. Will be one of the all time what might have been stories of the AFL.

An absolute tragedy.

Extending my condolences to the entire West Coast family also. It's easy to forget he spent brief periods elsewhere other than Port and the Crows so I only find it fitting to pass on my condolences to you boys.

Phil spend quite some time with you lot and has been an integral part in your history as a football club. I'm sure some of the boys have been on the list when Walshy was around and can't begin to imagine what they would be going through.

It's so easy to reflect and see the bad everywhere

I deal with bad everyday, youth suicides, drug overdoses And terrible stories in people's lives

Yet when someone gets off drugs and gets a job - I focus on that ....focus on what is achieved as opposed to what isn't

However I have gained strength from this by reflecting on the good things in my life, my family and what I have achieved.

I don't listen to the news much ....as it can cloud our thinking everything is bad when in fact most great news doesn't make the news ....

Make my family my news .....I even have that written above my desk with my other quote. I can't stress too much about things I can't control.

I will go for a long kayak tomorrow and have some positive think time.

Great post @Harhat11 and whilst I am stunned with this news I am saddened for what has happened to this family. Utter tragedy. Vale Phil Walsh.

Two clubs that have caused the AFC heartbreak over the years have today been overwhelming with their support in the wake of Friday mornings tragedy. Port Adelaide and West Coast, with both of which Phil left a lasting legacy, have been outstanding in showing some things are bigger than football. Both those involved in and outside the club. From one upset Crows fan tonight, I say thank you. #weflyasone

Terrible news. Was one of those moments where you half hear something as you are just about to walk out the door, it takes 5 seconds to clarify itself into sudden subconscious dread, and then it is confirmed by TV/Radio/in person. Terrible, terrible news, one of the most unforgettable passings for me (was watching ABC News Breakfast and they just looked shattered). Phil Walsh was never someone I would recognise on first sight on a street, but I always loved what he contributed to the Eagles when he was here, and at other clubs. He was one of my favourite assistants in the league, and was both surprised and glad when he got the big gig at Adelaide. Just having him on your coaching panel gave you a lot more belief. But then for this to happen, and in the circumstances it did (which are still a little unclear), it's really tough. It somewhat reminds me of the case with Philip Seymour Hoffman (who I adored), except that the awkwardness of his passing was somewhat more cliche (for lack of a better word) within acting, whereas this was totally unexpected and excruciatingly tragic.

The game is just numb at the moment, as if it has lost one of its most passionate people, but at least the game last night helped lead us forward a little. Best of luck to all in the football community, and I can't even begin to comprehend the pain felt by those left behind in what remains of the Walsh family. I wonder how the Eagles boys will get up today, but the result seems almost irrelevant now. And then there is next week, which is even more painful to think about.
