He's come into the contest at full speed and gets tackled after landing two steps. We see that called as not prior all the time. I strongly suspect that if Shiel's tackle had pinned the ball instead of knocking it out, it would have been called a ball-up and barely anyone would have even commented on it.

And to go into hyperbole, if we were to call that prior, we may as well turn it into touch footy because what's the point in risking all the harm from tackles if just about everything will be HTB anyway

Damn you and your logic.

yep ..he’s looking already like a Barnes with that acute awesomeness in his taps and palming forward into the ruck rovers running path.

Just turning 23 years old !!

love it
I love that set play where he knocks it to space and someone takes it running flat out. If they hit their target inside 50 it's a thing of beauty.

Yeah I know but I just wanted to make it clear that it’s a grey area for anyone who thinks it’s clear cut.

My main point is that:
1. It’s meant to be play-on only if the ball carrier hasn’t had prior
2. Bont allowed it to be stripped rather than it being stripped accidentally

The umpire therefore erred by not penalising against Bontempelli because the umpire incorrectly interpreted Bontempelli as not having had prior opportunity and not seeing that he deliberately allowed the ball ball to be knocked out.

I disagree strongly that “even with prior” it’s play on. Totally against the spirit of the interpretation.
That's incorrect. That is the previous interpretation. It has changed.

Not true. Read rule 18.6.3. It is the only rule referring to dislodgement of the ball in a tackle and pertains specifically to a no-prior scenario.

Yes that is the rule.

It is why I said interpretation. Not rule/law, we covered this already.

I really like Francis as a forward. Wouldnt mind seeing him there once Jones is back too. No room for Hooker now. What Francis does is present and keep doing it and do anything he can to make a contest and bring the ball to ground.

Yep, hard to see Hooker getting back in baring injury. Only issue I have with Francis is he often leads too far under the ball, usually when up on the wing, needs to sort that out, but otherwise very good move getting him forward.

Such a pleasing win. Midfield of Merrett, Parish, Stringer, and even Shiel are playing so well. Much of this is down to Draper who was simply outstanding. English towelled him up last year but his improvement over 1 year is increadible. 2MP played the game of his life. Go bombers!
Didn't we run Phillips against English last year?

it was always more fun when we discussed the advantage rule. (which unfortunately can never be as nice as simple as in rugby)
It can be dead simple: you either blow the whistle to stop play or call advantage to let it continue, but never both. The current system is the worst possible version.
