Rnd 3 Changes vs GWS

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We need to rest/manage a few of the older players and we need to keep developing our depth.

Out: Cox, Glass, Kerr, Embley

In: Lycett, Brennan, Stevens, Mcginnity

Agree...last year was the year we didn't have the runs on the board to be taking ANY team lightly. After a successful 2011, we have earnt that right to look further into the fixture IMO (rather than the old "one week at a time" cliche).

We will 'rest' nobody. Way too early in the season to do this.

The team is finding a good rhythm together, why break this?

The rhythm/chemistry argument is a valid argument against "resting" seniors this early in the season...good point. It's the old cost/benefit analysis that the coaches and MC will need to explore this week.

Resting players in Rnd 3 is a nonsense.

Early games is when team and individual improvement curve increases the most. Missing a game almost puts you back to square one.

Thats why teams that have early season byes usually lose the next week.
There is no way Worsfold will rest players in rnd3.

Will be interesting to see if any of the Claremont players such as Stevenson, Swift, McGinnity and Weedon are kept out of the game on Monday and rested. If we see this at all it would be pretty close to assuring them a spot vs GWS. Just depends how much they can back their recovery processes.

I may have a guess that Swift/Sheppard might play for Embley in the next few weeks as grooming for Embleys eventual replacement. And i feel Waters will miss due to suspension so Smith to provide more run from defence and Brennan in to shut down that slippery forward.

Swift ahead of Sheppard solely from a better pre season output.

Also with McInnes in good form we may see one of Lynch/Kennedy rested for the game. Would be sore after a couple of games straight from a limited pre season.

Remember last year when teams with the bye in the first half of the season usually lost the following week?

Don't flirt with form. We need to keep up the intensity and get the games into our core group of players.

I'm sure Woosha knows this as well. Any changes will be forced I would think because none in the WAFL have been knocking on the door for a place in the side.

My opinion is the opposite - if you have had a limited pre-season, you need more game time under your belt, under AFL conditions. Not sure what sending them to the WAFL, or resting them some more, would achieve.

Rest Kerr and Glass. Bring in Stevens/Swift and Brown. Play Cox for a half and sub him out. Embley's out so bring in Stevenson.

We aren't talking about the whole team having the week off though are we? Just a couple of 200+ game players. Geelong did it last year with great success, I dont see the harm in it personally. It's win-win, the old guys get a rest in preparation for a hard game against the Hawks and the young guys get some experience which we may need to call on later in the year if we have injuries.

I would rather give them a game off now than see them stuffed at seasons end when we need them at their peak for finals.

Besides, are you watching the GWS game? We could send over half a team and still beat them. They are insipid.

I still think that our core players don't need a rest at this stage. I don't think Geelong rested any of their senior players in the first few rounds last year. If we were playing GWS in Round 22 or something, then I would agree with you.

GWS are utterly shit. 46-3 at quarter time. Let's throw Glass at full forward and Darling at full back. We'd still win.

GWS are fair dinkum woeful this week... tricky conditions but jesus. It's not really good for our form anyway playing witches hats two weeks on the trot.

I reckon leave Kerr, Cox and anyone else with niggles home, thump the absolute living jesus out of GWS and be cherry ripe in both form and fitness for Hawthorn the following week.

It's not about whether players need a rest now, it's about getting them through to the final couple of months.

If they rest Cox, I'd bring in McInnes and use Lynch in the ruck.

Would giving them next week off extend their longevity by more than one week at the end of the season? I'm just not sure about that.

In any event no matter who we field next week, short of an entire reserve side, GWS will be beaten based on what we've seen so far.

If there are any injury niggles, then of course extra caution should be taken and they should be left in Perth. I imagine Embley would be a prime candidate even if he comes up well from his dislocated shoulder.

I don't subscribe to resting players for next week. Too early in the season and in a match that could potentially set us up with a really good percentage (not that it isn't good already) for the rest of the season. We can be cautious and rest players who are unusually sore or copped a knock (Rosa maybe), but other than that I think we should be going in with the best 22 available to us.

If Embley isn't 100% I'd bring Hams into the 21 and push Hill up to the wing, bringing in the best performing running/midfield player from the WAFL as the sub. Stevenson is one I'd like to see get a game, and if Rosa isn't 100% I'd bring him in.

Other than that, a case could be made for bringing out Smith, who has been in our bottom 3 both weeks, for Butler, Mcginnity or Stevenson, but I don't think its too pertinent and he should get better with game time.

Looking at GWS today I think we would be ok to rest a couple of players. I'm not too sure what the best strategy is, guessing our sport science dept would be all over it. But if it's going to help guys like Kerr and whoever, then I would support resting a couple of players if they really need it.

GWS are terrible - they shouldn't be playing AFL this year. The best pathway for them would have been a year in the VFL - like the Suns did. I would still take over a very strong team though. % will be important later, and I believe we only play them once > some teams get them twice.

I've thought about resting key players for next week. But to be honest its only ROUND 3. Who really needs a "rest" in the true sense. The only reason why i would be taking some guns out is that we dont want any injury worries coming from a game against GWS. Especially not with the Hawks coming up in ROUND 4.

OUT: Embley (rest / inj) IN: Stevens/Stevenson/Sheppard
OUT: Glass (rest) - IN: Brown/McInnes/Brennan

You are right GWS make Melbourne look good, seriously we should consider resting any players with niggles and bring them back next week against the hawks.

Totally agree, we have only played 2 games and we are talking about resting players.

I would only consider resting someone if they are carrying a injury and would benefit with a week off.

I don't know either and I'm not necessarily advocating resting players, but the argument that we shouldn't rest players at this time of the season because they're not tired yet is flawed IMO.

I wouldn't rest Kerr just yet. He was getting more and more involved as the game went on yesterday. Give him a good run.

After watching gws live today, Really hope we take advantage of next week and rest a good chunk of our senior players.
One less travel, and a big one at that they don't have to do.
Either that or we make sure we beat them by 30 goals and that bit of % may come in handy towards the buisness end of the year.
