Robbie has no luck with injuries at all. He dropped to mid 50's in the draft because of that exact reason (even though he dominated as a small forward often in the TAC Cup).

Just can't keep him on the park long enough.

But I agree, his best would be something to see.

I said after the Carlton game when most port supporters wanted him dropped that i didn't understand why.

He is going to be a star, no doubt in my mind. One of my most favourite players that isn't a Blue boy.

Hope he continues to improve. Absolute gun. Gogo Robbie.

Gee, I didn't hear any Port supporters wanting him dropped.

He presented really well and used the ball well last night. One thing that does worry me is the number of times when he's taking a set shot that he fails to carry the distance from easy kicking range.

Does anyone else get concerned about this?

That has been the one thing that has been eveident right from the word go, his kicking distance. Seems to struggle with anything over 40m.

Could it possibly be to do with his calf issues? For Robbie to be ultra, ultra dangerous he needs to find another 10-15m IMO. I have a feeling he will develop nicley into a Roger James type (hopefully). Keeps his feet really well when tackled, gets his arms clear, doesn't panic & has great vision.

It would be great to see him get over his injuries completely and be able to play for an extended period. He's good to watch IMO.

Not really, he did have OP last year, and a few injuries this year. I'm sure it will develop for a small to med size player.

Spot on Toots! has trouble kicking over a coke can, needs to work on that over the summer.

yeah, it's a concern. Depends on his injuries and the like. Next year will be interesting. If he hasn't added any distance to is kick over the summer, i'd have my doubts about him being a regular player in the future.

Cannot recall a single one ever actually, not once after any of his games.

IMO he is probably our best young prospect, but like all of our other young prospects he needs to get more penetration into his kicking, that costs him an average of something like 2 goals per game.

I don't think he's a naturally long kick but I also think it's a mental thing. He will just fail to carry the distance from forty metres and do the same from thirty. He's missed a few sitters. I felt sorry for him hitting the post against Carlton earlier this year when there'd been a long delay to get someone off the ground but IMO it's part of that same syndrome. He maybe needs the same treatment that Motlop got.

Westhoff and Boak are also not natural long kickers.
That however is something we often see young players improve on as the years go by.

Just another one to add to the massive bullshit file opposition supporters have compiled.

I'm not so sure DT - the bullshit file from this board this season has got a lot of material, but Robbie is one of only a few from the club from the CEO down to the bootstudder who have not been nominated for sacking.

Yep, injuries have always been a problem, and despite him having a good early start to the pre season, they seem to have flared up again. Still a long, long way from being 100% fit but hopefully he can get a full pre season next year.

In terms of his draft position, he personally thought his best chance was to be drafted as a rookie and he could have missed out all together, believe it or not. Missed a draft camp due to injury and Port were the only club to speak to him, though I heard Carlton were also interested at some point.

I believe that Robbie is a great player when getting in and under and gaining posession. Apart from his lack of kicking distance, the really annoying factor is when he takes a mark.
Until last night, he always seems to turn his back on the play- takes out his mouth guard - and goes through his routine. This means that any quick flow is lost, defenders can get between him and the goals, and the other forwards are covered. I've called him a show pony, this is harsh - but when he has trouble kicking over 40m, I'd really like to see him play on to advantage - like Ebert rather than struggling for anything around the 40m mark.

Given that he is young, a wise head and maturity will help. Maybe some work on the dynamics of his kicking will help and a greater understanding of the team play - rather than him having shots at goal.

Wow, really.

He played some outstanding footy in the TAC Cup. I'm surprised he didn't rate himself a little higher.

Very glad most other clubs possibly thought the same as Robbie though. With a better run with injries I think he could become a very good player for us. I like the way he goes about it, he looks naturally gifted in the footy smarts.

Yep. Was really on seen as a small forward as a junior because of fitness issues and there aren't many specialist forward pockets that get drafted these days, particulary those with injury concerns. Interesting that Mick Moylan said that he was seen as 'unfashionable player and solid rather than spectacular because that's not the impression I have got since he has been at the club.

FWIW, I think the kicking issues are injury/confidence related and should improve over time.

From what I have seen of Robbie Gray, he has a great footy brain.

He has the attributes to be a great crumber, similar to a Neon Davis, Andy Milne perhaps evan a Gary Ablett but I could be pushing it a little.

What some of our coaches are exepcting from his ridiculous I think because he hasn't got the body strength, the height to take a contested mark, but I do think he can be quick at evasive to kick a a snap goal or a goal on the run within 40mtrs.

More game time and more meat on his bones and he will be a genuine gun in the AFL in the next two years or sooner.

yep he seems to have the same strength through the hips as Ablett doesn't he, a great attrribute to have.

Robbie Grey develop into a Roger James type???.. You must be kidding... Roger was one if the best "hard nuts" that has ever pulled on the power jumper... 100% guts and determination..please don't compare this Grey kid to one of our legends..

At the same age (ie comparing R James' footy when he was the same age as Gray now), i'd say Robbie would be twice the player that James was.

Gray's got a way to go, but he certainly has the potential to be an elite midfielder within our side.
