In the Herald Sun this morning.
Rodney Eade has Paul Williams as a assistant coach, a new runner in Jon Stevens who replaces Peter Filandia and Rowan Warfe doing Stats.
Maybe we need an injection of new blood in the coaching ranks not just mates of Roos and Pommies who know nothing about footy.
Why do the Geelong's,Hawthorn's and Bulldogs get players from the modern era not has beens who are still stuck in the game plan of 2005, the game has moved on!

don't think its a major issure honestly (besides a pom teaching being our skills specialist)

experience comes along with the older heads, and not all positions relate directly with the new style of play nowadays

I think it's a bit harsh on the Pom. At least by bringing him in, we're showing that we are trying something new that might give us an edge on the rest of the competition. I have to agree though that our gameplan is getting tiresome. I love the hard, contested one on one footy but there are some major flaws that have been pointed out in other threads already:

1) Once the ball reaches the zone 50-80 metres from goal our players seem to think the best idea is to hold onto the ball waiting for a perfect pass while the opposition flood our 50. We have Barry ****ing Hall in our forward line, why the hell wouldn't you back him to beat his opponent one on one by banging it in quickly? Okay, sure, he may get beaten but he's rarely outmarked and the ball hits the ground (MEMO - PAUL ROOS: This is the situation other teams normally employ crumbers for). Any wonder Moore and Buchanan struggle to kick goals for us anymore. It's pretty tough to crumb a goal with 18 opposition players in the forward 50.
(Did anyone else notice St Kilda were in this exact situation many times last night? What did they do? The exact opposite to us that's what. Yes, on a few occassions the ball was quickly gathered up by our defenders and rushed up the ground (where we held onto the ball while the saints flooded back) but on many occasions when the saints just banged it in long, they either managed to find Kozi or Gardiner one out with their opponent or their other forwards were able to get to the ball first and score easy goals from within 10 metres.

2) Kick ins - Why in the hell do we setup with exactly the same plan every kick in now? What ever happened to the huddle? Every single kick in seems to follow the same routine: Player with the ball waits while no genuine options are presented because of the predictable opposition zone. Instead of marking targets like Jolly, Grundy or Goodes making strong leads from the middle of the ground we wait until time runs out and we end up kicking it 20 metres to a player in the pocket which then forces us to play that boring predictable "let's chip it to a leading target on the boundary line 10 ****ing times in a row" game while, once again, the opposition find it rediculously easy to flood back into our defensive 50.

I realise we don't have the cattle to play exactly like Geelong or Hawthorn but ffs we we need to at least fix some of the flaws that have plauged our gameplan for at least 3 seasons now.

Rant over!

I agree 100% with this. The Swans are far too conservative when going forward and kicking the ball in from a behind and this conservative approaching is hurting the Swans alot on field.

Good rant Malfan, also like to add, even when Hall doesnt take the grab when it goes to ground, hes like a wounded bull at the ball which usually ends with a goal assist or a goal to himself anyway!

Gotta say, the anti-Roos sentiment is a bit surprising, given that it's mostly off the back of one poor performance.

Not saying there isn't room for tactical changes, but I've noticed in a few threads people charging him with being stubborn and unwilling to change his gameplan, and responsible for some supposed terrible state we find ourselves in. It all seems a bit much this early in the season.

Didn't see too many people calling for his head last year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% behind Roosy and think he's a fantastic coach. NO ONE could have gotten what he has out of our list and I'll be forever grateful for our first premiership in 72 years. I even think I gameplan is very good for the most part, it's just those couple of points above that frustrate the hell out of me.

There's quite the emphasis on "trying something new" at Sydney.

A 205cm Brisbane 18-year-old, who has played just three games of AFL football and has never been a registered player, has been signed by the Sydney Swans.

MEET Mike Pyke, the 24-year-old Canadian international rugby union player who is determined to force his way into the Sydney Swans AFL team.

I'm not sold on novelty being the secret of AFL success.
