Rookie Draft - What do we think ?

I cannot understand the negative reactions by posters on here. All season I have read comments that WC were "too one dimensional", "lacked pace","didnt have enough talls in the squad","lacked quality kickers of the ball", "didnt have any quality crumbers" etc etc.

In 6 choices post season, WC have addressed all these issues, and yet there are still complaints from posters suggesting players like Manson and Nelson would be better bets. Sure there are no guarantees that those selected will make the grade, but WC HAVE recognized their deficiencies and made a very good stab at fixing them. When he is fit go and watch Dick run - he would beat Smith over 20m, and wait until Papertalk does a few preseasons - cause he will blow Dick away.

Go and read the article by Macgugan on the AFL website for a better indication on what the clubs are seeking nowdays, and you will see why players with little character have little chance of succeeding (Manson anyone). Additionally clubs recognize that there is only a limited number of spots for role players (those that are good at a lot but dont excel at anything) which is why Nelson didnt get drafted and in WC's case, why Jones was released.

WC's recruiters should have every reason to be happy with themselves. In a poor draft they have managed to make their squad very well rounded, and given they are only perhaps 1-2 very good players away from being a top 2 team, IMO they have given Worsfold some very good players to mould.

I'm really happy that Dick was pulled out of (seemingly) no where by West Coast. He really is a talent that will impress if he can stay fit.

I think a lot of people, clearly got swept up in Nelsons DC scores and Mansons media hype. Happens every year on BF, the less knowledgeable see the same names come up on boards, in papers and Phantom drafts and they end up thinking they know more than the clubs themselves. When a non BF name is taken instead, they flip.

The doctors are happy with him, and considering the work they've had to put into Kerr, Nicoski, Butler and Waters over the years I reckon they have a pretty good idea of who is capable of making it back to AFL footy.
Ambrose! Didn't realise you were active here. Of course I know who you are, know who I am? :D

Anyway on the topic at hand, why are people getting whiny about pick 69 in a shallow Rookie draft? I always like to look at it this way:
- if it works, what have we gained?
- if it doesn't work, what have we lost?

As a proven performer at AFL level we have the capacity here to have a small forward to go with Lecca and Newman, if it doesn't work, then...well...it was pick 68 in the rookie draft.

WCE have a history of out there final rookie picks ,.... JON , McGovern , Ashton Hams ( success ) and Bedford ,... oops he was a first round rookie pick . Dick is another now , we dont take best available .

Some people actually go to colts games every now and again. Nelson would rank is my third best draftable midfielder in the WA side behind Coniglio and Omeara. I prefered Newman and Williams but they roll across the forward line a lot more and don't have endurance to yet do it.

Im sure they had there reasons for overlooking him, but i don't know of any real issues within his game beyond some poor decisions he makes. Perhaps he's selfish.

Clubs do stange things. Bootsma goes first round, Williams goes in the rookie draft. Williams is the better player as his track record shows. Bootsma is taken because of his upside.

Cam Eardley ahead of Nelson, he's a solid work horse. Nelson isn't picked, but probably has more potential.

I don't think any of us are doubting Dick's football talent, just his ability to stay healthy. I'm surprised he passed a medical when he needs further surgery. I think a more prudent move would have been to let him heal up for 12 months and then see how he goes but he is on our list now so good luck to him. Passing over Marley Williams for Papertalk was also a small surprise. I probably would have taken both of them and let Dick slide through undrafted.

Well the recruiters obviously thought it was safest to bag dick.

I think we can all agree on that being an important standpoint, and definitely a message we want to be sending to the young, single recruits.

While i would have liked to have taken a punt on Manson everything you say is true. We have done rather well in filling certain criteria and adding depth to our list. Too early to tell who will succeed and who will fail but these are variables that no-one can truly answer until well into a players career or lack thereof. Overall we filled pace, outside runners small to medium forwards and KPP up rather well. For that we should tip our hat to the organization.:thumbsu:

Tunbridge sounds like he will do well and is focused on succeeding according to the west paper he actually turned down a opportunity to train with the eagles and decided to keep to his training program with his personal trainer .

in my humble opinion, its all good..its not exactly like were short on depth anymore..theyre queuing up left, right and centre..and rookies are a long shot-seeding the future..some you win, some you lose..Dicks a calculated risk the club can afford to take at this stage..with proven AFL raps,if he comes good-instant team jackpot..with more longevity than a medhurst or davies..
besides as the coach says, even newman and mcinnes will be standing in line behind the others waiting/trying to get a game from last season...its all good depth and pressure.:thumbsu:

Im with you EH. I really rate Shane Nelson; but would have him comfortably behind Tom Mitchell

Forgot about Mitchell, he had a pretty average year injury wise and played a handful of colts games. He wasn't an option anyway. :(
