Rookie Draft - What do we think ?

True to a point, but let's look at who we've lost. Aside from Judd, we really haven't been trading quality players here - I mean the last ones were Ebert who only wanted Port; Staker who I think nominated Brisbane; and Seaby, Cox's "short-round" sidekick. Alas, I just don't think they have much currency nor were likely to.

At the same time, the compo received for Judd was spent really poorly. Masten is the worst out of the first round that year (apparently there's stats for this), and Notte was delisted without playing a game for us if memory serves. Kennedy is great, but otherwise...

First rounders clearly ahead of Masten.

Kruezer, Cotchin, Rioli.

Other's:

S.Selwood, Ward.

The other point is the fact that he needs proper food to fuel his training and recovery, so not only has he taken a huge glob of saturated fat, he's also gone without the nutrients his body is demanding, particularly atm. It's a double-edged sword.

Out of the bunch I think Rioli or Ward are the only ones I'd prefer to Masten (Given that we couldn't actually get Kreuz or Cotch). He has shown that he can be very good without demonstrating much consistency and I don't think Dangerfield has shown any more consistency or talent at this stage.

I find that very hard to believe.

Veszpremi, Lobbe, and Tarrant combined would have played about 40 games, and many of them have been rubbish. Where as Maten has played 50+ and there has been instances of obvious ability.

Also, fact is Masten > Ebert.

Remembering what we were looking for in the 07 draft, who would you have taken ahead of Masten from the first round? If you say Dangerfield, he stayed in Vic to finish year 12 most of that year. If you say Rioli, wasn't there a big risk he'd go back to Melbourne eventually? Not to mention his persistent hamstring injuries.

I can't find the article, but I definitely recall reading one early this year that mentioned statistics regarding first-round draftees. Nic Nat was ranked no. 2 in his year behind Steele Sidebottom I think; Shuey was ranked higher than his pick, although this was before his really breakout year this year; and Masten was ranked no. 16. Believe it or not, that's what the article said.

Am i the only one who doesn't rate callan ward? Sure he's a pretty good player but i see nothing special about him. Couple that with his fake hardness where he deliberately puts himself in dangerous situations rather than protecting himself. Not only that when the inevitable contact comes he does a monfries and makes certain the whole world sees it.

No fake toughness about Ward. He's just as tough as Kerr or Waters. Worth every cent for GWS.* A leader already and he will be their captain in the next few years. Can see him becoming a Lenny Hayes type player.

*Don't know how much he's on so that could change my mind. However there is much more to the value of a player than just on field performance.

Yeah I'm kind of in the middle with Ward. He's brave, crazy brave. Maybe stupid brave, as in he's not aware of the fanger he puts hiself in at times.

Decent footballer, will never be a superstar IMO but will be a very solid AFL midfielder if he can stay on the park.

After we drafted McKenzie, Brown, Schofield and Thompson in the 2006 draft. Kewl story bro.

Harry Taylor was a great selection by Geelong, potentially a reach at the time. He isn't a peer of Masten's anyway, he's a peer of Kennedy's.
