Rookie Elevations

I don't think any have set the world on fire just yet but Curnow and Touhy probably showed more with skills and courage.I don't think at this stage the club will promote anyone until injuries occur.

We HAVE to promote somebody or else we lose the option to.

Incorrect.

We have the option to promote up to 2 rookies as we have no listed veterans.

We can nominate those rookies at any stage throughout the season.

We don't lose that option at any stage over the course of the year.

I thought it was either before the start of the season or after round 11 for nominated rookies J?

I'm almost positive that's wrong.

The nominated rookie situation relates to how many veterans you have on the list.

If you have no veterans (ie. Carlton), then you are able to nominate 2 rookies to play throughout the season. I'm almost certain they can be nominated at any stage throughout the course of the season, should we choose to nominate any.

The AFL then recently implemented a new rule whereby every club can nominate an extra rookie after round 11. That is regardless of veteran numbers and regardless of LTI's.

So - I think we can nominate 2 whenever we like, should we wish to do so. Then after round 11 we are able to nominate another, if we want.

Interesting that this comes up now ..........

AFLPA push to axe rookie list

ROOKIES will be torpedoed and club lists expanded to 46 under a plan being pushed by the AFL players' union.

The proposal is expected to surface in collective bargaining talks between league chiefs and the AFLPA in coming weeks.

It would see the annual rookie draft axed, with a greater number of selections made available at the November national draft and pre-season draft in December. Club lists now comprise 38 senior players and up to eight rookies.

Rookies who do not play a senior game this year will earn a miserly $35,400. There are now 118 rookies on clubs' lists across the competition - all of whom are unable to play AFL unless upgraded due to a long-term injury to a senior player.

How Come Houlihan isn't a veteran he come to the club in 1999? This would be his 11th year isn't that a veteran or do have to be 65.

The criteria for veteran status is 10 years of service & you have to be 30 years of age or older.

Houlihan has now satisfied the first criteria but not the second.

Not sure why the AFLPA is labelling this as "scrapping the rookie list"
Really its about extending the player roster at AFL clubs and so they should.
AFAIC, every player recruited to a club should be available for senior selection.
The rookie list was good in that it gave opportunities to players, however if list sizes are increased that would include rookie listed players as senior listed ones then those same opportunities still exist

The only issue is that some rookies are taken on as a big risk in terms of the chances they will develop into an AFL level player.
Perhaps if the standard draft contract for players drafted Round 6 and after (or whatever) would start as a 1 year deal. Not sure clubs would want to commit to 2 years on some of those guys.

But they should be paid more, and nobody really looses by letting them play regardless of long term injuries.

I've got no problems with the rookie list per se but to pay them that little is ridiculous. My view is that they should be paid the same as a lower round draft pick, with the benefit to the club coming in them being able to pack them off after a year if needs be.

These guys train the same as the rest and play every weekend. Terrible to pay them less.

$35,400 is 'disgraceful'?

These are, generally, 18 year old kids. Sounds like a good deal more than the average teenager earns. Plus with the possibility, if they're promoted, of earning $150-200K by their 21st birthday.

Those poor exploited rookies. :o

I am 19 and roughly I'd earn at most $7000 every year. Full time Uni though, so take that into account. Anyway about it, $35,400 straight out of high school, with the prospect to earn a lot more. I would take that in a heartbeat (not that I am any good at football) and finish my degree later

The beauty of it is that you could still do parts of your degree. They get plenty of help in regards to further education as well as 'life after football' and get well paid with, as you said, the prospect of earning a hell of a lot of money.

If you are good enough to get rookied generally you can play at a high level of local football and do quite well financially as well.

And even if you are the perennially injured type, I could probably do part-time uni, part-time recovery, earn myself the base wage and live comfortably, particularly if I was in my home state

Bullshit. A kid out of year 12 working at Woolies will earn that much. These blokes are expected to train like professional athletes, turn up to sponsors stuff, skills clinics etc just like the blokes earning 200K a year. There's no overtime for extra fitness or skills sessions they do and they don't get a day off. On top of that, they've got absolutely no job security and will be out on their arse at the drop of a hat.

It's ridiculous to draw a distinction between them and the later round picks in the ND and that's what the bottom line should be.

Levi elevated to senior list

Levi elevated to senior list

Wow.

Congrats to Casboult.

Hope Mitchell is OK.

BEST NEWS EVER!
Im so proud of Levi. He has worked so hard throughout last year, in the off-season and pre-season. His goal was to be elevated.
It is sad though that it comes because of Luke.
All the best to him on his road to recovery.
I'm just so excited for Levi. Im a big fan of Levi and hope he can play at least one senior game this year.
What a great 21st birthday present for him!
Congratulations Levi.
All the best on your recovery Luke.

blueblood25 posted that Mitchell had his arm in a sling last Saturday.

Will miss the first half of the season.

Luke Mitchell

Is recovering from shoulder surgery and will miss the first part of the 2011 season.

Casboult is only available whilst Mitchell is on the LTI.

Usually an eight week injury.

Big surprise. If Hendo was out, it would make sense. Perhaps they're considering playing Hendo at CHB and playing Levi deep forward? Anyway, wish Levi all the best. He's put in a massive effort over the past 12 months or so.

:)
