Analysis Ross Lyon

I am shocked that Weller is yet to receive a rising star nom for the 2 quarters he has played this year.

Don't know because he's usually in doing the things that would knock the stuffing out of someone like Weller.

Spot on.

Alot of people are hung up on the flair and flash with offensive running play instead of the grunt work which is often overlooked.

Matt DeBoer has played 14 games (4 as the sub) this season and averages 5.3 tackles a game(75 for the season). Only Mundy and Mayne average more (both 5.8) a game. In games where we have alot of stoppages, the tackling that comes from the clearance battle is a big issue, for a player Like Fyfe, Mundy or neale to get a clearance, another player will have to line up the opposition and give them minimal space and no mercy should they have the ball - in comes DeBoer and Suban, they let our better kicks to the ball as they bare most of the tackling and are very good with the ruck tap setups as to position themselves to somewhat screen their direct opponent a free run at the ball.

I have no doubt our future is bright, but its a toss up with stability and unknown quantities. I do feel they would have had more game time if at the start if they had more than a season under their belt and the tough fixture we had at the start, we had a mission to get into a good position early and we accomplished that without compromise. It will be eventual that they will shuffle in like Sutcliffe and Neale have done, as are Crozier and Sheridan eventually giving less reasons to get dropped.

You've made some good points which I agree with mostly. But you didn't answer Bankers point about A Pearce.

We would have never seen what Pearce had to offer this season if it weren't for injury, especially because of our ladder position.

I think Ross is overly conservative to a fault. To me De Boer is a net negative to the team. Trying out another first year player in his place either improves the team or keeps the status quo. I don't think you can get any worse than De Boer so it's a risk I would be willing to take.

I've been vocally negative about De Boer most of the season, after then tripe he dished up in the derby how anybody can think he is best 22 I just don't know.

Side note: Did we select the most unfit kids in the draft? I've seen plenty of first years kids run out full games this year. Why can't ours?
Not especially avoiding any questions, but don't immediately think I have to answer them either. But I don't accept the notion that A Pearce would have only got a chance if injury forced it. Just as with every player on the list it is up to them to get themselves selected. Duffield is no longer in the side and is not injured; changes happen.

Secondly, our backline is where MJ and MacPharlin reside, and both have shown they struggle to make it through a complete season and need to be managed. Dawson is a regular absentee courtesy of his own self, and started the season injured. Silvagni is one of our most injured players. It really shouldn't be any surprise that a player like Pearce gets an opportunity because an injury opens the door in that kind of situation. There was always going to be an opportunity if he could show himself to be worthy of taking his chance. After that it is up to him.

It is worth noting that we are going into this weeks game without Pavlich and without promoting his obvious replacement in Taberner. An injury opportunity is clearly not enough to warrant selection, even in a situation as desperate as we have with our forward line.

EDIT; A Pearce is 20 years old. Love to know at what age posters think he should have debuted so that we might have avoided rewarding his talent at such a ripe old age. Here I was thinking that he was way ahead of schedule.

this thread isn't going anywhere, no one thinks ross is a poor coach, everyone agrees he is the best coach this club has ever had and has our team playing at a consistency not seen before, we'll find out in a few weeks if Ross has changed anything to avoid another straight sets exit.
Not quite correct. There was a thread started suggesting that if we lost the GF then we should get rid of Lyon because he would be too scarred and anyway it would be evidence that he is not capable of winning a premiership. There are a few on here who are anti-Lyon agitators. Which is fine, however the relentless repetition is boring, particularly the notion that Weller is realistically going to replace de Boer, and shows a real disrespect for, and lack of understanding of, our game plan. It is like suggesting Langdon will replace Griffin.

The difference is Taberner has had chances at AFL level.

I think the coaches have worked out that at this stage of Taberner's development he's only likely to replace the drinks boy. (Thats not to say he won't eventually develop into a role player but he's a burden at AFL level at the moment)

The main difference is that Taberner is 2 years older. I cannot believe what posters on here expect of baby KPPs.

One thing I haven't made clear is that I don't care how old the players are we bring in, its not a youth fetish. It's about improving the overall skills of the team. Today proved again we are easily defended against because we have stupid & unskilled players bringing it inside 50 & not enough creative forwards.
It just happens that the only players outside the 22 that fit the criteria are young because we've exhausted the options.
I'd bring Duffield in next week if he is in form. At least he thinks & can hit a target.

Something is very wrong. I don't know if it's Ross but it's up to the coach to change things when they're not working and things aren't changing.

I can't work out how you can kick 7 goals in a quarter then 5 for the rest of the GAME.
Well we put the cue in the rack so much in the first half of the season that we actually haven't played 4 good quarters against a half decent or any team this year. If you allow mediocrity in the door, it becomes the norm and acceptable practice.

- poor skills
- slow
- can't close down space
- opp back men out mark our forwards
- terrible conversion rate

They are traits of a bottom 4 team. When Hill is quiet were done for. I'll let others list the passengers we had today.

Surely Ross knows it's time for Mzungu, De Boer etc. Why pesist with them? Clancee offers better kicking going forward. Plus what really gets me is Walters is way too far up the field then when the ball does get into our 50, he is no where around the packs. That's the true small forward role, crumb and get something from nothing. Don't get me wrong, Son Son is a talented player with the ball but wasting it in the defensive end of the ground.

Serious? You didn't notice any things "changed" in this game? I thought our forward line was nothing like it has been. Did you post up a best 22 before the season started? What was your forward line? Did it rely on a 20 year old KPD being asked to play as a forward? Did it have a developing young player like Crozier as one of its' big hopes? How many goals did it have Sandilands pencilled in for?
