I don't have a massive problem with Shiels from a personality point of view. Those outside the club are probably not in a great position to assess on field leadership abilities. Just because he's not belting someone every second week doesn't mean he isn't a good leader. A big physical presence isn't the only form of leadership.

I'm more concerned about choosing a captain that doesn't have to continually justify his place in the side. Shiels is currently our third best mid. What if Wingard ends up playing more mid than forward, we grab someone like cogs as a FA next year, and say Worpel continues to develop strongly, as does Howe. How long would it be before Shiels is borderline best 22 under that scenario? I think the ideal captain is someone who is so good that they are still easily best 22 even when in a form slump, irrespective of how other players around them improve. Hodge and S.Mitchell were both such players, and I'm not sure Shiels is. In fact I'm fairly sure he isn't.

Wow, I know I picked McEvoy but my choice is based on the Captain being someone of physical presence who could stand over the niggling campaigner from the opposition. Few others in our team are both ready to be Captain or have that characteristic. See Shiels, Smith and Gunner not big enough campaigners

Some of the comments here about Shiels demonstrate how underrated he truely is, the man is the "lay shaft" in our teams gearbox. Granted he is not the best at anything re the game but you will struggle to find a more rounded player.
He can run all day to link play, can shut down an opponent, is quicker than most give him credit for, tackles and blocks like a machine, is a competent overhead mark and this season past improved his goal kicking to the point where he kicked more than he missed.

If you care to look back over the recent glory years, when Shiels missed games we were often rolled, we missed him more than people realise; he has been and continues to be a very important part of the team. In the future if we can afford to play him of the HBF then we will be going very well. Remember Ayers was a ripper midfielder but played back pocket.

The person that I would really love to see given the captaincy for 2019 is Shaun Burgoyne. I know this is unlikely but I just feel he would be the perfect fit for 12 months, and then the door is open for a Jaeger/Mitchell type in 2020. Apart from his age he ticks every box for me.

Nothing against any of the other mentioned in here, as I feel Smith, Shiels, Gunston, McEvoy or even Mitchell or Jaeger would do a great job.

Agreed. Shaun is the spiritual leader of this great club.

Liam’s 23 disposals, 4 clearances , 6 tackles a game isn’t the numbers of a battler!!! Maybe turn his 9 goals to 15 and he’d be elevated in his standing even more. Isn’t that what Lewis did post 2012 to be regarded as elite by the end of 2016??? There isn’t just one or two simple reasons as to how and why hawks finished 5th, Liam along with the midfield group were enormous for much of the year. Let’s not forget that he was our best performer in the finals as well in 2018!! At 27, it’s perfect timing because it gives time for one of the younger brigade to come up the ranks to show their leadership qualities.

Anyone else here Don Scott on SEN this morning regarding rough?

Tend to cringe whenever he talks Hawthorn these days. Forever grateful to him for helping save the club - but **** he’s unrelentingly negative about HFC these days.

Is everybody suggesting Tom Mitchell forgetting how painfully average and borderline poor Shane Crawford was as captain? Best player doesn't automatically mean best choice for captain.

Would be happy with Shiels, Smith, Gunston or Stratts honestly. Feel as if we can't go wrong with any of them.
Stratts as captain intrigues me the most. Would certainly bring some swagger as the face of our club. St.Kilda feel like such a nothing club currently and it starts at the top with Jarryn Geary. Absolutely isn't a dig at his ability or leadership qualities, but he is so vanilla and forgettable in the media and as a personality that the Saints feel a tad irrelevant at the moment.
Saints are irrelevant because they don't win, simple as that. I have no clue if Geary is helping or hurting them in that regard but If they were winning Geary would be higher profile and Stkilda would be relevant.

I just wish Jaeger was ready for it.

He is our next great captain.

I hope he is included in the leadership group for next year.

Edit. Missed the new thread. Mods feel free to move.

Reckon it might on the cards for Titch as well. Part of every player's development, at one point or another, is their leadership capabilities and skills - it's probably the only area Tom needs to work on.

Not understanding all the angst.

We’ve got good leaders who’ve ran out with some of the best the game has ever seen.

There’s almost zero chance that any of the candidates will be a “bad call” when Clarko and Sam are involved.

So much this. Lots of good candidates, we really are spoilt for choice IMO. Of everyone mentioned I could see them all making a decent job of it. I'm confident that the coaches and the team will make a good appointment.

As stated previously, just for speculation purposes, I think it will be Shiels although I am leaning more towards Smith the more I think about it just based on the fact that he stood in for Roughy last year on several occasions

He just doesn't like what football had become these days and, by extension, HFC (I feel the same truth be told). Don't tend to take him too seriously as he's really not involved anymore. At least you don't get PR speak from him, quite the opposite :p

A lot of harsh views on Shiels here.

In terms of on field presence, shiels for whatever he has lacked in class, has put his body on the line for Hawthorn every time it was asked of him since he was a 17 year old skinny kid playing for us whilst attending high school.

No.co.captains.

Agree, but think it extremely unlikely thankfully (Jeff hates them and maybe others at the club do to).

Co-captains screams to me that a club doesn't have anyone good enough to be captain in their own right

No, do share?

What did he say?

Just seemed to allude that Rough was pushed more than chose to step down. And that the system these days is far more political and the coaches pick .

Wasn't the most serious chat and Ned's assessment is probably dead right but thought I would write it how I heard/interpreted it .
