7/8 players coming back, not including Reeves or DGB. I don't think there are that many players to drop before we get to Shiels, Phillips and Howe.
Becoming available doesn't = coming back.

I really hope it doesn't work out that way, but we'll see.

Hardwick Frost Impey
Day DGB Jiath
Bramble Mitchell Worps
More Lewis Wingard
Sicily Kosi Bruest
McEvoy Scrim JOM
Newk Maginness Reeves Ward

I reckon Gunston might be done. If so, Sicily plays forward - will kick 50. Not a fan of Frost or Hartigan but we need some strength down back. Hartigan only plays half the games - when the oppo has a big forward (Cats, Tigers, etc). Reckon Scrim has the best quick hands in the team. Get him on ball. No future in playing the likes of Philips, Shiels or Howe.

I just finished watching a replay of the round 15 game against GWS where all of Scrimshaw, Day, Bramble and Jiath played and rotated through the wing.

Absolutely electric. Day dominated when playing higher up the ground, so much of the play went through him.

Pretty strong chance that Shiels, Phillips & Howe play Round 1.

I’d back Howe to play more than a few for the year, he looked a different player at times in 2021. Much more polished than the other two mentioned there.

His marking and kicking seemed like they belonged to a best 22 player. He just looked a big upgrade on Phillips, same power and heart, more skill. Plus his top end speed is actually good, and his lack of acceleration over 10-20m didn’t seem to hurt him running up and down a wing all day.

buy on Bramble and Day. The former effectively stepped in to take over from the latter as a rebounding playmaker when injury hit.

Do we lose something off the HBF if they both push out to a wing? More difficult lt to quarterback the team or get involved to turn an attack into rebound from out there, (though Scic coming back and Scrimshaw stepping up take care of this to a point).

Day looks a wingman in build, but is he wasted out there?

I had also pegged Bramble to come into the midfield proper eventually. he has great speed and evasion to go with that Smith like gait and endurance.

Day, Bramble and Impey are the type of players the midfield sorely lacks, an injection of speed and skills. Playing them up the ground would significantly improve the ball movement going inside 50.

Surely it’s now time to play Impey in the midfield? Look at Karl Amon and Rory Laird as examples. They’ve gone from playing as defenders to becoming elite midfielders.
Is Impey’s tank going to allow a Breust type rotation in there, or a full time role?

i love him, he’s super explosive and tough. But I have a feeling he’s more an occasional option rather than a full time midfielder.

Agree that the latter are backup types. Take a look at Howe over the last few games of 2021 though - he owned his wing and provided valuable link up marking and kicking during transition. Particularly against the tigers, with heaps of assists and quality delivery to our forwards.

Hard to believe I’m writing that I know, but he really showed another level that had previously been well concealed.

I doubt Howe would be playing. Bramble and Day are and will be better wingmen for us moving forward.

Based on last seasons round 23 side we will have - Day, Gunston, Breust, Brockman, Moore, Sicily, Impey and CJ returning. That doesn't include DGB, or any of the youngsters/draftees that take the next step.

Guys like Howe, Phillips and Morrison will not see the field, barring a speight of injuries IMO.

Rd1
Hardwick Hartigan Sicily
Impey Frost CJ
Bramble Jags Day
Wingard Lewis Moore
Kosi Gunston Breust

BB Worps Mitchell

Shiels Scrimshaw DGB Reeves

A lot of what if’s rolling into next season. I’ll stick with the safe bet for now with the above team.
It’s not the team I would select but I recon this will be pretty close

Good side but two defenders for rotation and no forward on the bench? Plus Mitchell likes Nash for speed and size in the middle, so I think you’ll see him for Shiels perhaps? Both are defensive mids.

Most don't have Phillips in the team. Interesting.
My thought process was allow as many mature age players that allow structure and leadership while playing young players, even then I couldn;t fit in all the young players I wanted. Thats without Shiels, Howe and Philips being in the best 22-26.

Phillips aint terrible. He can provide run as he has a very good tank and he likes a sneaky goal. A pretty honest player. He is good depth to have.

The issue I have with Philips is his kicking. He isn't Pat Malone in this regard in our midfield. However, when you are running with Mitchell, JOM, Worpel as your main mids alot of the time along with Phillips on a wing it isn't exactly a damaging by foot midfield. He just adds to our issues in this regard.

Thats why the likes of Wingard, Bramble, Ward, Day, eventually maybe Downie etc running up the ground and delivering into the F50 is so important for us. I know alot don't rate Howe but he is a better kick, mark and link up player than Phillips imo. I would have Howe in front too.

Phillips is good depth and we need the likes of him especially when our young players tire throughout the season and we get injuries. I just don't see him in our "best" 22.

He ain't exactly old though so he could still prove me wrong.

Swap a couple of flanks and pockets and I’ve written down exactly the same this week.

You know we have some depth when Shiels, Howe, Newcombe and Phillips can't get a game
The Shiels one hurts because I’ve defended him any chance I’ve gotten this year and is a long time favourite.

Just a really exciting preseason coming up isn’t it. Greaves was probably in half of everyone’s teams this time a year ago and CJ on extended benches or playing at Box Hill..

Thing is that I have Scrim as a def/mid this season with him in mind to be more mid than defence when the bye comes around.
Reeves/BB would be the resting forward letting any one of Lewis, Kosi or Gunston roam the ground if needed.
Mitchell, Worps and Jags will get flipped around a bit more up forward I recon so another genuine forward outside of Wingard, Breust and Moore won’t be required first up.

In a team that I select I’d be trying to squeeze in Brockman and Nash for Shiels and Hartiganbut I think this will come later.

Most don't have Phillips in the team. Interesting.

Fair bit too much criticism leveled at Phillips imo. Easy target as he's a newcomer to the team, new to the structure and his skills aren't the best. Felt he had reasonable success in the HFF role we had barely anyone else available to play, kicked goals and worked hard which is exactly what everyone should have expected. Not a liability by any means.

Hardwick. I'm sure you just forgot him.
