Has anyone seen this weekends SANFL teams and does it tell us which three will be omitted?

Looks like Hentschel is certain to play, will he really be at full forward though? Biglands at full back is another interesting one, but sensible if McKernan starts at full forward.

I'm a little surprised Torney and Ladhams aren't considered to be in our best 25. Why would these two be on the outer?

The SANFL are only playing trials this week, so we won't get any clues from that direction. The Crows have to firm up the 22 by 5 30 pm tonight.

It's difficult to say who are the 3 that will miss, as it depends on how tall we want to go. I think Schuey will miss. Another to miss is likely to be between Shirley and Bode - I'll go for Shirley to miss. The last miss is likely to be between Hentschel and Hudson - I'll go for Hudson to miss. As you can see I have no idea really and by 5 30 pm tonight the above will either look like wisdom or crap!!

Torney's had an interrupted pre-season and wasn't expected to be considered for this game. He'll get a chance along the way and I would expect that once he's in there'll be no displacing him.

Ladhams is a very different kettle of fish. Rightly or wrongly, one gets the impression that he is so far on the outer that he is out of sight and mind. I have no idea why, nor have I heard anything in that direction. He did play a shocking trial against Glenelg and looked totally disinterested, so whether that's the cause I just don't know.

I think that anyone who is named in the starting 18 will definetly play (thats how AFC work ) so expect Bode and Hentschel to definetly play unless they get injured before the game.

I am going to go a bit differently in picking who will miss. I think Shirley will miss and one of Doughty and Schuback. Schuback most probably. The other one I think will miss is Bassett.

I don't know if you listened to Gary on 5AA last night but he did say we can go in with 3 ruckman if needed as he is prepared to play Biglands in KP. apparently Gary reckons that Biglands has shown some really good signs as a key defender during the pre-season.

Think about it this way. If Roos go with 3 tall forwards in McKernan, Rocca and Petrie we need height. Bassett has played on all 3 of those at some stage or another and had his colors lowered. Even if Roos don't fo with Rocca, we can still go in with 3 ruckman (and without Bassett) because Hentschel offers us some flexibility in being able to play as a flanker (down back, up forward or even on the wing) something Bassett is not really comfortable with. While I am a bit sceptical of Biglands playing as a key defender, I can see the reasoning behind it. Horses for courses. It would appear that finally AFC are selecting on the basis of whats needed rather than names.

At 5:30 tonight, we will know whether I am right or completely off the mark

As for Torney and Ladhams, Torney is still gaining fitness and is probably another 2 weeks away. Ladhams is still recovering from shin soreness and as macca23 said he put in a shocker against Glenelg, which wouldn't have helped him at all.

I think Hudson Schuback and one of either Shirley or Doughty will miss out.

Interested to see whether we take the attacking option of Doughty or the defensive option of Shirley.

I have a good feeling about this game.

I believe the forecast is for hot but chance of showers.

If it rains then all those talls would be suicide.

Hudson, Schuback & S Stevens named for their SANFL sides, so they are the ones who will probably miss.

Leaves probably Biglands, Perrie/Bassett (depending where Hentschel starts), Doughty & Shirley to start on the bench.

Also, its good to see Schuback got picked, however his name is in the paper for Glenelg. So thats gone down the drain. I think he deserves a game ahead of Shirley.

I've got no problems with Ladhams missing out...too often he is disinterested, woefully inconsistent, and rarely does he put his body on the line and win a hard ball. He looks good when he does have the footy, but if he's not having a good game, he generally contributes nothing to the side.

Like Jars, I actually have a good feeling about this match. I like the side we have named, if the 22 is as we suspect, it's a nice balance, a good spread of talent, that's ready and raring to go. As Healy alluded to on 'On The Couch', we've flown under the radar this pre-season, the expectations are not high outside the camp, but I think we have the cattle to do it (having said all that, you could say the same about the Kangas). We have something to prove to the football world and I'm feeling rather confident for some reason.

I'm going to try and turn over a new leaf this year and be more positive. So with that in mind, my tip is the Crows by 19 in a bit of a shootout

Forecast is now up from 28 to 31 with a late change at night. I have serious doubts it will rain during the game.

If it does go that high then it may be as bad as rain if you go with alot of talls, the midfielders will need alot of rotation if its hot.

Given the warmer conditions I think our bench will be Hale, Baird, Harris and Rawlings.

If Archer doesn't come good he will probably be replaced by Firrito.

It is a similar lineup to what we took against Fremantle in the practice match a fortnight ago up in Perth and did well there, was hot there aswell.

I don't really want to spoil you positive attitude but I think you should know that our record against Roos at the MCG is pretty ordinary (1-5). In other words we only won on the last saturday in september back in 98. I hope by late sunday afternoon that record will read 2-5.

I want us to win every game we play at the G this year especially since a few of our players never played at the MCG.

The record's not as bad as 1-5 would make it seem.

2 point loss in 1991 (1st season - before we'd ever won a game in Melbourne)
3 point loss in 1995
39 point loss in 1996
4 point loss in 1998 (thanks John Harvey)
35 point win in 1998 (GF)
57 point loss in 1999 (North 10 goals by 1QT).

3 kicks away from being 3-3 vs North at MCG.....

BTW - who are the players who've never played at the 'G? Assuming Hudson and Schuback don't make the final 22, I think it would only be Hentschel and Reilly? Scott Stevens has, Doughty has, Rob Shirley has.

Well i dunno if its just me that thinks this, but i thought that on pre season form that Gags would definently atleast get named in the 25 for round? surely he deserves a game before shirley, shuback, doughty and maybe even bode as well but oh well thats just my opinion.

Went to North training today.

Archer won't play IMO. The bloke is stark raving mad, but of what I saw he will be playing with one hand if he does. Anyone else you could scratch him now.

Motlop would be 50-50. Struggling to extend his arms all the way.

McKernan is moving like the '96 vintage. Could have a massive one.

Hale, Harris and Rocca are the emergencies for the Roos. If Archer doesn't play then I would suspect that Harris would come in.

I must admit I am a bit perplexed as to why Harris is not in the best 22. It might be just me but I really rate the kid and I would LOVE him at the Crows.

If these two don't play, the pendulum definitely swings further in favour of the Crows IMO. Archer in particular is the heart and soul of the Kangaroos.

Mind you, only a stark raving lunatic of a coach would play unfit players in round 1.

Better to take your chances in this one and have the players available for the rest of the season.

I don't think there is any provision for an expanded interchange in the proper AFL season. It's based on the assumption that there won't be any days with extremely hot weather conditions.

However, they've lengthened the half-time break from 20 minutes to 25 minutes for the Sunday games in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Hale was the surpise omission for me. From all accounts it seemed as if he had a great pre-season and lead up, and without him in the 22 it means either Porter has to play a lot of time on the field rucking, or McKernan and/or Petrie will have to spend some time on the ball too, instead of playing as full time forward targets. Neither is an ideal situation IMO, though to be fair Matty Clarke isn't going to cause a lot of trouble around the ground. Hale could have been the guy to expose this.

Hale is a completely different player to last season. He has put on quite a bit of weight and his body is a lot more prepared for AFL footy. Last season he was underdone and it showed.

As has been said, a lot of North supporters have been miffed at the inconsistecies regarding Harro's playing time under JYD. The only thing I can really think of is accountability for his own man, which can be poor at times, but the only way a guy can learn and gain confidence is with consistent minutes on the park.

I think if Harris, Hale or whoever miss it is because of the opposition moreso than anything else.

I think if we were playing Carlton or Bulldogs they would probably play but Adelaide is not a team you want the midfielders running amok.

Harris will be a good player and am sure will get plenty of opportunity but Laidley may feel its better for him to have a full game in the twos than a few minutes a quarter in the seniors, particularly if he is looking for continual improvement with the defensive side of his game.

Surprised M Stevens is named, I wouldn't be surprised if there were late changes but I dont think it will make a huge difference. Harris was named emergency many times last year and ended up playing alot of those game so I am not convinced he will miss.
