I think the failure of JJ, and to a lesser extent Gov (lesser because of size and type) in providing a marking target, hitting up, and giving focus to our forward sorties is the reason Betts kept flying

Someone has to attack the ball in the air to create the ground contest, and seeing as no one else had the conjones he took it on himself like the little champ he is

No point in him staying down to crumb the non-existent contest. He’d been doing that all game and it wasn’t working so he’s decided to throw himself up and at it

His game was the symptom not the problem

We set up a forward line with only an 18 year old kid as any sort of physical target, no wonder he ran out of puff.

Without Tex and Lynch to do the heavy lifting did Jenkins step up? No he left it to little Eddie Betts to attack the aerial contests in the second half

Id agree with this in many games, especially when it is a deep entry into our fwd line to 2v2 and JJ is the other forward, but last night he was flying for the sake of flying and taking out teammates who had position when he could have easily worked to the fall of the ball for a better result.

I think he was mindful of the situation and was trying to step up and take a few grabs and provide a contest. Can’t fault him for effort and heart but it was still misguided, he’s better placed on the deck waiting at the fall of the ball and he often took out his own player by jumping on their head. That’s a net loss x2 unless he marks it, which is low percentage.

Agreed

Even with Lynch and Tex we have an emerging forward line problem

Big guys don't play like big guys and we look thin on smalls

We will beat up the shitty teams

It's been a problem for years that our list management have refused to confront.

Giving Jenkins a 3/4 million dollar contract was utterly negligent.

Pyke's presser
"Does having so many players out temper your feeling about the loss?"

"No. Not at all. We were 20 points up at three quarter time in a game that we expected to win. And we didn't."

The correct attitude.

Having players out might change things if you are noncompetitive for the entire match and lose every quarter. But we were in front, slipped away and lost. We could have won. And that stings a bit.

Mackay was actually deserving to join that group , was very good fairs fair

There were passages of play he was excellent. Unfortunately his body still lets him down in the physical stuff and there were a few times his opponent brushed him away and that led to scoring opportunities. Probably borderline for that group.

He was much better than Atkins though who also was brushed away and terrible in every other way.

Gibbs also borderline for the group

Im calling it.. after the round 5 clash when Sydney destroy us we will be 1-4 and there's no coming back from that. Its going to be a long season. Too soft, too slow and mental scars that will play havoc on the team all year.
You’ve gone early this year.

Didn’t you declare that we wouldn’t make the Eight last year two thirds of the way through last year (when we were sitting in first position)?

I find your words comforting, you could be correct but so is a broken clock twice a day.
The real question is Idiot or Troll?

Exactly.

Eddie Flying at least gives us something when our other tarrgets are cooked and/or Jenkins. He was the only forward the presented a genuine option through the middle late in the game, with Fog playing deep.

That pissed me off to no end that play.

Gibbs had it within striking distance then JJ screams and jumps up and down for it to be kicked to him. Then the ****ing idiot just lets it go.

He's a 200cm forward FFS - if the ball is kicked to you because you want it so bad then you make sure you bloody well get it!

Jenkins only wanted it on his terms to pad his stats. That is the type of selfish basketballer he is. Bryce, dont kick it to jenkins again, take the responsibility yourself.

Not sure who to blame more here. Jenkins for calling for it, or Hampton for getting in the way. Either way between them they completely and utterly f****d it up
I blame Gibbs. Don’t pass to useless team mates when you’re in a position to score yourself.

I thought our ball movement kept us in a game Essendon otherwise controlled. That happened quite a bit last year - the superior slice and dice won us a few games you’d assume we’d lost just by looking at the stat sheet.

Other than that it is *always* folly to read anything into Round 1. We have injuries and underdone players at the moment, but if you’re ever going to have that situation, now’s the best time of year to have it. As long as you can stay in touch, that is.

I liked the Velvet Fog. And yeah, I’m coining that nickname.

Very disappointing last night, we certainly let that one slip. I think some people on this board need to take it in perspective though.
Best 22 missing......Walker, Lynch, B. Crouch, Knight, Smith.
Walker, Lynch and Knight should all be back shortly.
1st gamers.....Murphy, Fogarty and Doedee.
THE SKY IS NOT FALLING YET.
Hopefully we'll get Tex and Lycnh back next week for a must win.
Have faith people.

Twice Gibbs had good chances to go for goal and he passed - once in the third when Hampton and JJ ****ed it up, and in the 4th when he passed to err... nobody.

Time to whisper in his ear that we got him over as a nearly 250 gamer to take responsibility and provide us with his finishing class.

Good - Doedee and Fog good. Even Murphy tried hard. Gibbs showed how handy he can be. Crouch still accumulates and Sloane handled close pressure a bit better (had their arms wrapped round him before he took possession umps so blind to that).

Bad - Jenkins. Total liability. Had to play a role leading up and sucked big time. Gov same deal. Sucked. Neither of these guys were able to take a mark leading up and we couldnt lock it in. Talia is so bloody slow and it just shows when we lose.

Ugly - our fitness. But realistically it was only because our defence and mids were under constant siege because we couldnt lock it in the front half thanks once again to JJ and Gov. Eddie Betts flying highest - should only ever be a novelty in a 10 goal win, but once again, JJ and Gov didnt provide crumbing opps.
Overuse of the ball, handball-centric style just puts us under pressure and shows a lack of confidence.

Bad luck 'bout last night, you lot.

Umpiring terrible, heaps of key outs, delayed preseason, playing away against an reasonable opposition... far from panic stations.

Expect top four. Best of luck for the rest of the season. Port can fair dinkum GAGF.

Whilst true, it is worth noting that the height and wingspan was what made Lever a luxury as a loose defender.

Doedee showed enough he too will end up a top defender but more in the Gibson mould.
Reality is physical size and body shape has alot to do with how someone plays the game. If Shaq was 5 foot 10 he wouldnt have played NBL.
We had people here trying to say Doedee was going to replace Jake. He was never going to do that. He doesnt have the physical ability to do so. But he can be a medium defender along with Kelly.
What will be interesting is if the game moves towards the Richmond style of smaller faster forwards, in which case a player like Tom can be more valuable than another key type.
