Simpson with 25 against Souths today makes the McVee discussion interesting, but (the couple of Cat10s nonwithstanding) I don't think he did anything particularly egregious.

Pearce/Young for OMac/Scerri (desperately unlucky, but they're not going to drop a defender and unbalance the backline) feels like the obvious change.

Just looking at Brisbane's injury list, and it looks like Berry and Zorko will be ready to come in next week given they were listed as "Test" for this week.

I don’t mind McVee. Decent defender, usually in the right spot. We’re in a good spot if he’s our ‘worst’ player.

But I’m all for the hate. Because this board also gave it to Amiss, Voss and Worner. And that turned out well.
He’s been defending very well. For that reason he stays but his disposal at times is bewildering. Some terrible turnovers. To me he lacks confidence to bite off a particular kick and then holds onto it too long and ends up having to rush kick. Needs to be more instinctual. I’d expect that to improve as he gets more familiar with the game style and team. There was one turnover that comes to mind in the third quarter. It was i50 where he ran forward had ample opportunity to kick i50 but end hesitating a couple of times and then sold himself into trouble and had to rush kick the ball over the Saints player. It ended up looping directly to a Saints player around 30metres away all by himself. He needs to kick that crapola out. Go with first option and trust his disposal.

I really liked Cooper Simpson’s game today and he could well roll across the halfback line at some point very soon. His ball use is very much first option and very nice low passes.

This is exactly it. If McVee can start taking first option, he will be fine. Seems to be hesitating and then running into trouble. There is something holding him back.

Spot on, he is not taking first option and then running himself into trouble and then fluffing the kick.

Didn't see enough of him at Melbourne to know whether he is a poor decision maker or just taking time to adapt to new team mates, new structure and playing style.

I think he will come good, has some good attributes.

He is tracking as quite literally an upgrade on Switta. If he can learn to hit the scoreboard more often he will be a gun.
Hmm maybe. Scerri's kicking looks like long bomb or bust where Switta is an excellent 30-40m kick. It is something Scerri is going to have to put A LOT of time into I think

Probably just Pearce and Young in for Scerri and OMac. A bit unclucky. McVee stays for the moment - only if Walker recovers from concussion properly and plays a couple of games at Peel, I think he would add some run and can also play lockdown on a small forward.

Drizz, Johno, Erasmus, Wagner all did well in their midfield roles. Will be interesting when Serong gets back who he comes for if everyone is still fit.

Not sure where to put this, but how many Thursday or Friday night have we got at the tail end of the season?

I've never seen anything like it

It's a good thing for the club but sucks for smaller families - getting home past 10pm on a school night or before junior footy is tough going. My boy managed to the end and then passed out shortly afterwards.

Is it really a benefit when most of the Friday night clashes are fake-prime time anyway?

They're also a pain to get to for people who work too.

Again the game didn't really fill up til well into the 1st quarter.

Interesting to see what we do with Darcy. ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT NOW THAT HE IS THE BETTER RUCK. Let's build him slow. We have the luxury to do so.

Getting Darcy fit and back into semi decent form makes us almost impossible to stop.

Obviously OMac out for Pearce and gee someone is going to be unlucky to miss for Young.
Wot ?

There is a ****ing shit tonne of doubt about that

Say what you like about Cox dropping marks but Darcy doesn’t even get hands on most of those

Cox is 2x the target down the line that Darcy is

Jeez, distance makes the heart grow fonder and all. Banfield has struggled to hit a kick at Peel this year, he will.not be an upgrade on McVee though I agree McVee was poor again. He has completely lost all confidence in his kicking and even his handballing is going backwards.

Why was McVee frequently on Mason Wood when they dont exactly run a super tall forwardline? Who was Ryan on most of the night.

There has to be nuances to how this backline is organising themselves because Id argue our worst two performers are 2 of the 7 down there every night.
Fortunately Worner is one of the most improved players in the comp. Great to see.

Brain can't think quick enough, coupla times this year he had been running 'free' and unable to decide kick/handball over the top and ended up running straight into the tackle. Also looks a bit 'flimsy', not strong.

How can anyone say NOD out? 27 disposals, can’t think of any cat 10s (although there must have been at least one). He’s earnt another game.
I don’t reckon Pearce will be be ready, so OMac gets another week. If Young’s ready then he comes in for Scerri.

But we need to be talking about Switta imo. He’s been terrible.
Yeah, he did ok.

Somebody will get squeezed out, but he made it difficult for the brains trust to choose him.

I think Darcy's still the better ruck. Cox's ruck work is relatively fine without scoreboard impact on lower volume, but get exposed on higher volume.

But the question is are we looking for the better ruck? When Darcy played with Jackson this season, they shared the ruck about 50-50. When Cox has played with Jackson, it's about 70-30 Jackson. For perspective, in previous seasons when we had Voss pinch hit it'd be like 85-15. I like the 70-30 split more - gives Jackson a bunch of stoppage time to impact games, but enough of a chop out that he doesn't get broken.

If Jackson is now the #1 but the 2nd ruck is there to give him a chop out (unless midfield Jackson is something crazy I think this is where we should be at), I don't think the question should be who's the better ruck. It should be who can impact the game more in low TOG with Jackson being the #1. And Cox's aerial work is the difference maker until Darcy can actually cover ground acceptably. In past viewing experience, that's a good few weeks after he's back from injury minimum.

Right now my biggest problem with Cox is that when he clunks it nobody's running for the handball receive. He should have the Sandi "when in doubt, handpass" rules.

Nope, no doubt for me at all.

Had a sneaky feeling that Caleb was actually managed against the saints they just didn’t want to give Ross any ammo by saying to his troops we were resting players against them

Although, the 2-3 week diagnosis kinda ruined that theory

This is where I disagree, we’re winning games but we can still improve. JLo said it himself. McVee has been glaringly our worst player for weeks on end - we have other options and selection integrity suggests he should be chopped.

You don't trade a guy for an early pick on a 5 year deal then win 10 straight and drop him unless his form is terrible.

McVee won't be dropped any time soon.

All I'll say is both Worner and Wagner looked as headless as McVee playing off half back for a good season or two before settling.

Hopefully Judd settles into his role too.

Bolton was mediocre in his first season and now a key player and a Brownlow smokey. Hopefully McVee is solid in the back half of the year then becomes a key cog next year.
