Autopsy Round 2, 2021: Hawthorn defeated by Richmond

We lost the game, which isn't a surprise at all really considering the outs. Take away 3 of Richmond's 5 best players and give us ours back and they're not winning that one.

One of my major concerns is Tom Mitchell. He's such a great accumulator but I am concerned about how he attacks stoppages, I think he does disrupt our midfield unit in his endeavour to get as much ball as possible.

CJ was best for us by a mile. Saved us from a 10 goal flogging and provided some run and energy while everyone else stopped and took us nowhere.

CJ was good but he showed a lot of his worst today under pressure. Reckon his mistakes hurt us a lot as they led to some easy goals for Richmond.

For anyone that has access to the relevant data I would love to know what our scoring efficiency inside forward 50 has been like over the past 4 years.

We seem to get very little value from our repeat inside 50s which I personly believe is down to our bewildering tactic of long bombs to know one in particular.

Its all very well having a good backline (which we do) but geez we won't win many games kicking 7 goals!

The F50 entries are a result of what’s just happened up the field. Our backline is great but exagerrated a bit by our numbers flooding back. The ball will get out but we won’t have the numbers upfield which resulted in a Puopolo vs everyone scenario. Even with an unexpected midfield turnover, we have nobody up forward.

Another reason is the switch or 3 or 4 backwards handballs, ample time for the oppo to fill our F50. Our gameplan is to commit numbers to the ball but it just results in overuse and unnecessary handballs. Good sides send 1 in and 3 peel off forward of the ball, not behind. It’s changing slowly with a lot more (too loopy) handballs in front if the runner but the skill levels aren’t there yet.

Lastly, there is the TOB factor, he drops too many marks, he needs to be a decoy and allow others to lead into different spots. We need to use his weakness as a strength.

They are just a very well oiled machine. Better game plan, better coached currently (don't @ me) and are all on the same page. Hopefully we get back there, but it will take time.
Much like Hawthorn 2012-2015. You can only do so much with the list you have. We’ll be back again because that’s what Hawthorn do.

In fairness to them they were missing one of their best 5 in Vlastuin.

TOB is a pea heart needs to go.
Skills were absolutely woeful today
We had our chances, disappointing
Can call him a lot of things, but pea heart hardly one of them. Gets himself to contests, just can't mark a football to save his life. Got cleaned up at least once putting his head over the ball.

The umpiring seemed to favour Richmond. They got the softer free kicks. The one paid against Worpel when he was already lying on the ground and the Richmond player fell over him infuriated me in particular.
Yes they were deplorable in the third quarter and OK the rest of the game.

Not sure if you know how numbers work but 3 > 1 and its debatable if he is one of their best 5. Martin, Grimes, Prestia, Lynch, Riewoldt all ahead of him I think. In terms of value I'd almost place Nankervis, Edwards and Lambert on par or higher.

..
we seem to have lost the ability to just tap the ball to a teammate without taking possession. I know that was a Cyril specialty but there were many opportunities to do that today but players took possession under pressure and caused a turnover. I guess they are playing the percentages but it dosn’t always apply against Richmond.
thats not a cyril thing, tho he had the best style, that is a strong gameplan with everyone brought in and a confidence game in yaself and teammates.

Soon we are going to have to fit Greaves, Sicily and DGB into that back 6.
So maybe/hopefully Day and Srimmers can push up become those bigger mids with elite kicking. Would be a welcome change as to what we have now. Teams just walk it out the centre bounce. Very hard to watch.
Downie will be on a wing as well, so we just gotta ride it out but eventually We will start looking better through the midfield with growth from within.

Yeah that was frustrating to watch. Today. The thing is though, in two years when those kids have 30-40 more games under their belts, those things won't happen. Or happen way less anyway.
You nailed it - The key here is patience - the last thing we want to do is panic and bring in a host of also ran players from other clubs. We have to persist with the kids we have. Signs are good. Morrison and Howe were alright today, Kosi will learn alot from going up against that zone defence - CJ and Day continue to build and improve Brockman was again good though Hanrahan and Moore were a little quieter. We will get a few more good draft picks and free agents to add to this group but its moving in the right direction. It has to take time is you want it to be successful.

Really, is that how numbers work?

How condescending and unneeded, especially when you've seemingly missed my point.

I wasn't suggesting that the loss of Vlastuin equals the loss of Gunston, Sicily and Wingard. However I feel it's rather disingenuous to point out that we are missing three of our best five players without acknowledging that they were missing (IMO) one of their best five players.
