Not sure where the hypocrisy is, unless those same people have also been calling for more onerous lockdown measures? I haven't seen any reference to that being the case though i also haven't looked for them."free speech" protest/rallies are fine and stuff the consequences from the lack of social distancing, sounds a tad hypocritical to me.
If the churches chose to challenge the rules, they probably would've been allowed. After all the Constitution bans prohibiting the free exercise of religion.Why weren't people allowed "religious freedom of worship" and able to go to churches..... this coming from an anti-theist BTW.
A similar case is Palmer's challenging of the state border closures. Those closures are almost definitely banned by the Constitution's section 92 but no one chose to challenge them initially.
