Well I'd rather lose by 48 than 30 if that's the case rather than playing someone that isn't taking us anywhere.

We aren't winning games with them either way.
IMO, the way we're picking the team is trying to find a balance between developing the next generation and playing a competitive brand of footy. So we pick a side that has a good blend of experienced types and raw kids.

We could go down the path of picking a side that contains mostly our players with under 50 games:
Koschitzke*
Mansell*
Hugo
Maurice*
Miller*
Young*
Dow*
Cumberland#
Clarke*
Ryan*
Sonsie#
Banks*
Bauer
Coulthard
Campbell*
Brown*
Trezise*
Lefau*
Fawcett
Green#
McAuliffe
Smith

* - played at least 1 game this season
# - selected in squad at least 1 game this season

However when you actually step back and take a look, you can we've already either played or picked most of this group in games already this season. So we're not exactly ignoring the development of the next generation, but we're doing it in a way, that meant that we could push Carlton to the final siren and stick with Port for about 3/4 of the game instead of being blown out and not really giving the kids the best chance to play in competitive games which aids their development more, than being treated like a witches hat.

While I can understand the disappointment among fans that some of these players aren't producing at the level some would like, people need to understand that they are still relatively inexperienced and yet people are expecting them to come in and play at the level of established players. I'm sure guys like Dow Banks Ryan & Maurice would love to be impacting more than they have so far, but these guys have played 20, 8, 16 & 29 games respectively and that patience is required while they continue their development.

It's a marathon not a sprint that we're in when it comes to the development of these kids, we need to give the kids time and understand that there will be frustrations along the way. Gradually these kids will replace the older guys that many feel have run their race, but that will only happen when Yze and co, believe they are better able to play the roles as well as run out games better than the older guys are able to, so that we remain as competitive as possible and not fall into the rut that WCE & North have over the last few years where they're not competitive and it just become a cycle where they're almost beaten before they take the field.

Huh? one good VFL game he's been perhaps our best performer in the preseason games and opening game.

So why do players like banks and even junior with no decent reserves form get picked.

I want players who are performing in the ressies to be rewarded, McAuliffe, Ralphsmith and Cumbo played well *en play them.
Patience.

The concern for me is he drops kids, but old players playing like s**t seem to have a leave pass.

In what world is playing Macintosh better for us than playing Clarke?

Macintosh doesn't make us "more competitive".
Exactly. There's no way that playing Clarke instead of McIntosh will make us any worse.

Maybe Clarke isn't as good yet at running around all day for only 8 touches.

No, Ross came in and had an automatic impact playing in the middle of the ground, those 3 mentioned and a few others have never done that. There has been some frustration with Ross, but that has mainly been in regard to the way he has been coached, not so much the player. He had a dip in form, mainly his kicking where posters piled on a bit, but he has been good for two seasons now.

Mansell does not deserve to be dropped after last week, played well, but he does that every half a dozen games. MRJ has not fired a shot in 2 years, Dow, I'm willing to give one more week because he played well late last season. Clarke over Banks also right now, Banks looks a long way off it and needs to find some ball in the VFL, unlike Clarke who has form.

It's not only about just play young players, but playing young players who look ready and have shown a bit of talent at the top level, over those who are out of form or have been Hardwich battlers for a good while now.
This his 6th season. If he's been playing good for the past 2 seasons, then that means....that it took him to find his form? Automatic impact is a bit strong. He had some decent games and some games he did nothing.

And that's some revisionist history too about those guys being any different from Ross at the start of their careers. Maurice Rioli absolutely had an instant impact when he came in, more than Ross did in his first 2 years at Richmond for sure. He had a poor 2023, but his 2022 was quite promising with his relentless pressure to go along with some impact with the ball too.
Mansell before his bs suspension last year looked to be settling into his spot to the point where is was an actual loss when he got suspended.

MRJ comes in because our pressure has been so poor that bringing in someone with his attitude to chasing is needed, even if he has provided little to nothing with the ball. Attitude is important and I guess the hope is he can find some way to impact with the ball too.

Clearly they have shown something, which is why they are getting played. Attitude is important, knowing the gameplay is important, playing your position is important, defensive running is important. There's way more into it than just what supporters can see. We might watch a game and think wow Cumberland kicked 3 goals and looked dangerous, but the team watching the tape sees he's not defensively running with his man which destroyed our defensive gameplay and made him a net negative overall. He gets dropped and told to work on that part of his game but all supporters see is a guy that kicked 3 goals getting dropped and wonder why.

Team selection isn't always right, but its silly to think now 3 different head coaches have all just decided to pick certain players for 0 reason.

That's why some of these older guys, that are constantly being targeted to get dropped each week, are holding their spots at the moment, because they are important to structure. When we've lost structure in games, that is when opposition teams open us up more.
What structure is this? The one that allows the opposition to move the ball the length of the ground with barely any pressure at all? Structure? It's pressure we need to apply. Being able to lay a tackle that actually stops the opposition would be nice to see too.
